Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Known as the tin-snail, the 2CV gained a quirky reputation over it's life - and is now a genuine motoring icon.

The Citroën 2CV was first introduced in 1948 at Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and then manufactured for 42 years. The inspiration and purpose behind the car were to motorise French farmers who were still using horses and carts. The car featured straightforward metal bodywork, originally corrugated for added strength without weight.

Any car that stays in production for nearly half a century has to be an icon, and the 2CV is up there with the best of them.

The adorable french classic design melts most hearts, it really does transport you to a bygone era. This example has the benefitted from 30 years of ownership, restored twice, and is finished in the desirable Delage Red and Buttermilk colour scheme - not one you'll want to miss.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steve & Angela the owners, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Steve and Angela, are two huge 2CV fans, they've enjoyed 30 years of happy ownership of this cult classic.

Purchasing this 2CV in 1991, Steve and Angela have love their ownership and joined several 2CV clubs during that time to share their passion with likeminded enthusiasts. The longest and the most memorable journey was over to Holland.

After using this car regularly for the previous 30 years, Steve and Angela now require something a little more practical and have come to the difficult decision to part with the car, they'd love to pass a car with such history onto a like-minded 2CV enthusiast. The car has been subject to two previous restorations, the most recent being in 2007. Since then it's been serviced and MOT'd to maintain the mechanical upkeep of this classic.

Angela's love for 2CV's began in the '60s when she drove one around Devon. This is her third 2CV, given the moniker 'Ella' and has been the one to stay with her for the longest time. Steve and Angela have fitted a tow bar, so they could take their bikes on their adventures around the UK. They will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Branded the 'Tin Snail' for it's quirky characterful styling and built - The 2CV is a truly iconic car.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with painted wheels and chrome hub cabs that really suit the character of this classic. The tyres are Nankang XC-668's all-round and dated 2015.

The wheels are show signs of age in the form of surface rust and would benefit from refurbishment. The tyres appear in good condition and appear to have a good amount of tread for the new custodian to drive away on.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this Spécial 2CV6 Dolly, all the panels appear straight with flush shut lines and even looking panel gaps. When photographing the car we noticed some light areas of surface rust to the front bumper and wings, and some leading edges of panels etc - the common areas of light surface rust on 2CV's.

Angela has done her best at preserving the life of this 2CV over his previous 30 years of ownership. Take a look for yourself in the media pack below.

Paint

We like the colour choice of this Citroen 'Delage Red and Buttermilk' (aka rhubarb and custard). The finish of the paint is even across the car and it really stands out on the roads today as a cheeky and quirky colour combo.

We did notice some very minor lacquer peel on the boot and some slight fading of the Delage Red. Take a closer look at the paint for yourself in the extensive photo and videos below.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks, chips, or discoloration. The folding canvas roof looks in great condition too.

The trim around the car appears in good condition but it showing its age in places. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this special 2CV.

Interior

A smart and hard-wearing interior with the essentials for any journey fitted.

Seats and Carpets

The grey vinyl bench seats in the front and rear of the car look in great condition and are showing very little signs of age. They have held their shape very well over the previous 32 years. Angela reports comfortable cruising in them too - having travelled across to Holland.

Rubber mats line the floor, and present in great condition, we noticed some very light surface rust on the floors.

Dashboard

A great-looking interior and a dashboard to match, it is in line with the age and mileage of the car, free from cracks or major wear.

Angela reports all the dials, gauges, and buttons are working as expected. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A simple and elegant affair, the thin rimmed large 2 spoke steering wheel make controlling the car a joy. Both the gear stick and steering wheel appear in great condition in line with the rest of the interior and in great original conditon.

Mechanics

Who says you have to go fast to have fun, the 2CV is amazingly flexible and a hoot to drive too!

Engine and Gearbox

This car is fitted with a 0.6L engine which is practical, reliable, and easy to work on, Exactly why it was such a big hit for ~42 years.

The gearbox is a four-speed manual, rather advanced on an inexpensive car at the time. The 2CV featured an interesting shift pattern, the idea was to put the most used gears opposite each other, a clever concept that worked well.

Angela report the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with no known issues, watch the video to see it in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The 2CV has extremely long-travel suspension, which offers a very soft ride and off-road capability - carry eggs over a freshly ploughed field without any issues!

During the restoration, the car was treated to a galvanised chassis. Please see the mechanical media pack to observe the good overall condition of the suspension and brakes on this 2CV6.

The Drive

A very soft ride is offered in the Citroën 2CV6, the suspension allows you to drive over any surface you desire in comfort and control.

You don't need a lot of power to have much fun, it's easy to maintain momentum as you whizz around those bends. These cars are hugely iconic, and we can see why. Not only do they look awesome they're great fun to drive too.

Electrics and Other

We love the simple electrical set up in this classic car, back to the raw driving experience. To Angelas knowledge, everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from 2 true enthusiasts, over 30 years of ownership and a host of restorative work in that time to keep this French classic on the roads.

Steve and Angela have taken a lot of care into maintaining this 2CV, the car has been rebuilt twice (last in 2007), and the car comes with a host of provenance dating back to when it rolled off the production line.

The car has many services to back up the genuine mileage and has the benefit of being driven regularly by Steve and Angela, along with many clean MOTs. Steve and Angela, are more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
