The Citroën 2CV Dolly has a lovable and quirky character that quickly became an icon across Europe and further afield.

The Citroën 2CV was first introduced in 1948 at Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and then manufactured for 42 years.

The inspiration and purpose behind the car was to motorise French farmers who were still using horses and carts. The car featured straightforward metal bodywork, originally corrugated for added strength without weight. Any car that stays in production for nearly half a century has to be an iconic legend, and the 2CV (or tin snail) is up there with the best of them.

The peak of 2CV sales in the United Kingdom would be reached in 1986, thanks to the introduction of the popular Dolly special edition which replaced the Spécial. The Dolly used bright two-tone colour schemes with a similar Art Deco style as the more subdued Charleston. The cars quickly sold out and the Dolly became a permanent fixture in the 2CV range.

Roland is a big 2CV fan and is making the difficult decision to part with this lovely Dolly finished in green and white with a matching interior.

Exterior

Nicknamed the 'Tin Snail' for it's quirky and characterful snail-like french styling - they are truly an iconic car.

Wheels and Tyres

Grey wheels with chromed hubs are in-keeping with its classic french styling.

Each wheel and hub looks in good condition, some of the paint around the wheels has started to crack and peal, and would look excellent with a fresh coat of paint - perhaps a job for a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The rubber looks to be in really good condition, with plenty of grippy tread for the new owner to use.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this example - on the driver's door we noticed a small ding in the bright sunlight. All panel gaps look correct and there are no signs of the usual corrosion after reviewing the images.

We did notice some very small areas of the rubber seals degrading and in line with the age of the car - a small scrape / paint pealing on the rear wheel arches.

Paint

The fashionable twin-tone colour scheme makes a return, in white and green, this car looks great and a real iconic legend bound to turn heads.

The paint looks in good condition, overall deep in finish and colour and even across all the panels.

Glass and Trim

Overall it's in good condition and in line with the rest of the car - all the trim/seals look good too with some slight signs of wear over the previous 32 years.

Interior

Matching white and green vinyl seats really make the car pop and stand out.

Seats and Carpets

These seats and carpets look great on this example - a very well maintained interior over the previous years.

The interior is quirky yet practical, the carpets look great and very clean, the door cards and headline follow this theme; this Dolly cabin is a lovely place to be.

Dashboard

The original centre simply styled dashboard is fitted here, in the original fashion.

Crisp dials with legible numbers found on this well cared for example.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

You'll find the original Citroën two-spoke steering wheel and gear knob here, both look to be in line with the rest of the car, i.e. in great condition all round.

Mechanics

The 2CV proves you don't have to go fast to have fun. A reliable, air-cooled 0.6L engine, that weighs almost nothing and has a silky-smooth ride.

Engine and Gearbox

The gearbox is a four-speed manual, rather advanced on an inexpensive car at the time. The 2CV featured an interesting shift pattern, the idea was to put the most used gears opposite each other, a clever concept that worked well in the Tin Snail.

Roland reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with no known issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The 2CV features extremely long-travel suspension, which offers a very soft ride and offroad capability - carry eggs over a freshly ploughed field without any mess.

The Drive

The ultra-soft ride is what this car is all about - very soft suspension lets you drive over any surface you desire in comfort and control. You also don't need a lot of power to have fun, it's easy to maintain your momentum as you whizz around country lanes.

It's the car with a huge cult following, and we totally see why.
