Known as the tin-snail, the 2CV gained a quirky reputation over its life - and is now a genuine motoring icon.

The Citroën 2CV was first introduced in 1948 at Paris Mondial de l'Automobile and then manufactured for 42 years. It's a worthy contender and one that is completely justified when it appears on lists of cars you must drive before you die. Its post-war roots and specifications were incrementally enhanced throughout the course of its 42-year manufacturing run, but it never strayed from its original identity. With an unmistakable character, ride and unique but always entertaining driving style, the 2CV has firmly planted itself into the history of the automobile.

This car is coming to market from ~20 years ownership, and has benefitted from a reconditioned engine in 2015, and is finished in the desirable red over white classic colour scheme and looks remarkably solid - not one you'll want to miss.

Sheila purchased this 2CV ~20 years ago, she tells us "Dolly's smiling headlamps were so attractive. Her bright red and white colours filled me with joy and I knew she could be part of the family! Over the years I have maintained her mechanics and bodywork and she has returned that care with great pleasure". The only upgrade Sheila has added is a more reliable electric ignition.

Exterior

Any car that stays in production for nearly half a century has to be an icon, and the Tin Snail is up there with the best of them.

Wheels and Tyres

Cream wheels with chromed hubs are in keeping with its classic French styling. Each wheel looks in good condition, but there is some corrosion around the outer edges.

The Firestone tyres look to be in really good condition, with plenty of grippy tread for the new owner to use. Please review the images and videos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The 2CV's bodywork looks in great shape on this car, with all the panel gaps and shut lines looking good and inline with its age and mileage. The underside of the car looks in good condition too, as can be seen pictured in the "Mechanics" gallery.

We only noticed two small areas of redness on both front doors, at the bottom of the window, the redness actually looked like it could be "T-Cut" away. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a gorgeous red over white paint scheme, the finish of the paint looks the part from afar, with coverage across each panel. If we were being really picky, we would say the rear arches appear a little flat, but they look like a proper mop and polish would bring life and lustre back.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this car looks to be in great condition. The trim/rubber seals look good too and in line with the rest of the car. The top has a canvas cover that can be rolled back when the sun is shinning.

Interior

Utilitarian in its nature, the cabin is hardwearing and still presents in relatively smart condition.

Seats and Carpets

The original patterned seats look in great condition in this example. Finished in cloth we love the practicality and vintage style. The carpets look good, as well in line with the rest of the car. There are some areas that a proper clean could bring up a level, but all in all remarkably nice.

During our inspection of the images, we did notice the rear nearside door card missing along with the sun visor. Please take a look at the images for a closer view.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dashboard and simple instrument cluster with small signs of patina. Some aftermarket pieces have been fitted like a phone holder as pictured.

We did notice wear and age to the passenger side storage area, there is new piece of material ready to be fitted, please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

You'll find the original Citroën two-spoke steering wheel and gear knob here, both look to be in line with the rest of the car.

Mechanics

Incredible fun to drive, it might not be fast but is a joy to ride in, especially with the roof open.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a small yet zippy 0.6L petrol engine, it may not be the most powerful but it sure provides a unique experience. The car had a reconditioned engine fitted in 2015. More recently, it had a replacement bottom end fitted, and the head de-coked and cleaned and re-assembled. On acceleration, we did notice smoke from the exhaust, the mechanics advising that this should pass when the engine work has bedded in.

Suspension and Brakes

The 2CV features extremely long-travel suspension, which offers a very soft ride and offroad capability - carry eggs over a freshly ploughed field without any issues.

The Drive

With these 2CV you'll often hear owners mention "not needing a lot of power to have a lot of fun", we couldn't agree more, it's easy to maintain momentum as you whizz around those bends. The soft ride is what this car is all about - the suspension lets you drive over any surface you desire in comfort and control.

These cars are still hugely popular, and we can see why. Not only do they look awesome they're great fun to drive to.

Electrics and Other

We love the simple electrical set-up in this classic car, back to the raw driving experience - free from distractions.

Sheila reports all aspects of the electrics are working as they should to her knowledge, apart from the interior light.
