Introduction

Paul Wright
Automotive Photographer

Designed to broaden the appeal of the model, the series III was introduced in March 1979 with a number of important changes, one of which was fuel injection.

A more modern appearance was needed by Jaguar to broaden the appeal of the model and so a few changes were made to the series III, even though they were still produced with the series II floor-pan, boot and bonnet. The roof line was raised to give occupants more headroom and the windscreen rake was altered to give a cleaner, more sleek look.

Aside from cosmetic changes such as wrap-around, thicker bumpers, the removal of the front quarter light windows and new rear light clusters, one of the most important changes was the introduction of the Lusac Bosch fuel injection system. Other modifications to the cylinder head and air intake boosted the power output of the 4.2 to 205bhp, an increase of 24bhp from the previous carburettor setup.

The series III had a successful production run up until 1986. In 1983, just to confuse everybody, the model names changed. The base model would become known as the XJ6, the more luxurious was the Jaguar sovereign and the top of the tree was known simply as the Daimler.

This particular model is the 1979 version of the Daimler Sovereign 4.2 which looks to be in lovely condition, with its factory option vinyl roof, an interior with no real signs of any heavy wear and low mileage for the year.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Jez the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A true petrol head himself, Jez was lucky enough to be left the Daimler by a family member.

After being left the Daimler, the first thing Jez has done is put on a fresh MOT to make sure everything is in order. The car did pass, so it’s safe and legal, although there are some advisories noted, but nothing that couldn't be tackled by the hands-on mechanic at home.

With storage issues becoming a problem, as the workshop he rents is being sold, this has left an issue, and not wanting the car to deteriorate being outside, Jez has decided it must be sold to save such a nice example.

Jez will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The Series III was a huge step forward for Jaguar shaping the more modern style for the next generation of XJ models.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the originals, which are in good condition and have a nice chrome finish to the trims with no signs of corrosion. There is a Daimler logo center cap missing from one wheel, but easily replaceable.

The tyres, although legal, are of an age where they have started to perish slightly, which has been noted as on advisory on the recent MOT.

Bodywork

Walking around the car, the panel gaps look to be as they should and looking down the flanks of the car, it can only be described as straight, with no noticeable dents.

We did notice some slight bubbling around the passenger door lock, but this looks to have been here for quite a while and hasn't broken through the paint.

The factory vinyl roof looks to be in excellent condition with no damage to the finish and the electric sunroof works just as it should.

Paint

Finished in red with a gold pin stripe, black vinyl roof and plenty of chrome, the Daimler looks fantastic.

This Daimler was repainted a number of years ago, prior to the seller's family member purchasing the car in 2005.

There is the odd chip on a couple of the doors and some surface rust to the rear arches, but in general for a car over 40 years old this Daimler definitely isn’t showing its age.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all original and is etched with the registration number, and in good condition with no noticeable scratches to mention.

The chrome trim around the windows is all nice and straight. This looks to have no signs of tarnishing or corrosion which we could see.

Interior

A refreshing change to see a fabric interior over leather, which is in excellent condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Daimler are finished in a biscuit colour material as opposed to the more commonly found leather, and the condition for the age is excellent. A plus side of the material is it doesn't crease like leather with age.

The carpets are also in excellent condition with no real wear to the driver’s heel area. Lifting up the carpet reveals the soundproofing which is all still intact.

In the boot is the same story, the carpet is excellent and under the floor is the spare wheel, wheel brace and jack.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any cracking to the top and also the burr walnut fascia is in good condition and no obvious cracking to the lacquered finish. The instruments are all in excellent order with the odometer reading circa 73,906 miles.

The centre console retains the original radio cassette and the switchgear around this for the windows and heaters is all in good order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original large 70’s style Daimler one and has no obvious signs of heavy use.

The automatic gear stick also looks to be free from wear and sits in the surround, and the numbers are legible and is free from any splits.

Mechanics

A 4.2 straight six powerhouse with fuel injection was a step forward for the Daimler.

Engine and Gearbox

The Daimler fires up with ease from cold, and the straight six ticks over nice and smoothly, which sounds lovely with no untoward noises creeping in. Looking on the underside there were no signs of any leaks that we could see on our visit.

Jez reports that the car pulls well through the automatic gearbox and he says changes gear with ease, with no noises coming from the transmission side of things.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the Sovereign underwent massive changes for the series III. The front suspension incorporated anti-dive technology, with semi-trailing wishbones and an anti-roll bar.

Jez reports the Daimler is a joy to drive, which handles nicely and soaks up the road really well.

The brakes on the Daimler are all working as they should, bringing the heavy car to a halt nice and quickly.

The Drive

Perfect for the aspiring gangster or even as a family car, the Daimler Sovereign won’t disappoint as a true British classic. It may be 40 years old, but fuel injection, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof are all the mod cons you need right? 205bhp is plenty enough to keep up with today's traffic.

Electrics and Other

Jez reports that, to his knowledge, all the electrics and gauges are working as they should.

We tested the roof and windows which open and close nicely.

History and Paperwork

A great Daimler with a good history file and room for improvement over time.

A nice history file comes with the car including the owner's manual and previous MOT certificates dating back to the beginning in 1982.

There are plenty of invoices for work carried out over the years.

As mentioned, Jez has recently put a fresh MOT on the Daimler carried out on 21st May 2021. It's also worth mentioning that according to the paperwork the car has only covered around 700 miles since 2007.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.
