The chosen conveyance of HM Queen Elizabeth and successive Prime Ministers the marque has been serving the British establishment since 1900. The combination of beautifully engineered engines, superb build quality, opulence and exquisite build quality served to make Daimler the choice of Royalty, diplomats and superstars.

Derived from the aluminium bodied Jaguar X350 range these cars were introduced in 2005 as the Super Eight. The Jaguar 4.2L, 400BHP, V8 engine delivers power through a silky smooth six speed automatic transmission and provides a serene, virtually silent, ride. Both luxurious and capable, 0 to 60 comes up in around five seconds.

This stunning, low mileage example finished in Garnet Red is everything you’d expect from these magnificent carriages. It’s the long wheelbase model and is furnished internally in ivory leather with burr walnut. The current keepers told us the car is a pampered, garaged and highly original example and we found nothing to tell us otherwise.

Stately and imposing – the British establishment in motion

Wheels and Tyres

19-inch alloy wheels look in fair condition and we could see no major cracks or chips. There are, however, kerb marks on all four wheels and therefore some refurbishment work would help bring them up to the standard of the rest of the car. Tyres appear in sound condition and a full-size spare is included

Bodywork

The car stands straight, all panels look good, and we could see no evidence of any significant repair. Panel gaps all look good and boot, bonnet and all four doors open and close with reassuring precision. Exactly what as we would expect from Jaguar engineering.

Paint

The “Garnet Red” paintwork presents well and really suits the cars stately appearance. There is a deep, even consistent shine right across the car. The are a minor flaws as would be expected on a car of this age. Most notably some scratches on the front valance and lower parts of the car, a few minor chips on the wheel arches and a small scratch on the near side of the rear valance. There is also a small are of bubbling on the roof. Overall, however, the paintwork looks good.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, rear and side windows look clear and free from significant marks or wear. Lights, lenses and mirrors all look good with no cracks, scratching or misting that we could see.

The chrome trim looks in superb condition and the signature, fluted bonnet looks great. Badging presents well and lights and the badging, while showing some ageing, still looks great.

Seats and Carpets

The cabin is everything you would expect from Daimler class and quality. Ivory leather seats present beautifully with hardly any signs of wear. Even the bolster on the driver’s seat looks great. Ashley confirms that all four seats are electrically adjustable and work exactly as they should. The Mocha coloured carpets are also in great shape, and this is complemented by signature Burr Walnut trim which looks stunning.

Both front and rear seats are powered, the driver’s also being equipped with heating and memory functions. The car also has rear door blinds, electric rear window blind and electric sunroof. Even the front seat position is adjustable from the rear seating position as befits a long wheelbase Daimler.

Dashboard

Dials, switches and gauges all look in very good condition with no cracks, scratches or misting that we could see. Letters and numbers are clear, and Ashley confirms everything works properly.

Burr Walnut surround and trim is clean and unmarked with no apparent cracking or fading of the finish.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We are advised the steering wheel was replaced to match the rest of the wood and the finish speaks for itself. The wood, ivory leather covered boss and Daimler badging all look superb.

Likewise, the Burr Walnut and Ivory leather auto selector and console perfectly the match the luxury and condition of the rest of the interior.

Mechanics

Luxury blended with V8 power and supercar performance – a perfect combination

Engine and Gearbox

Power comes from Jaguars 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine and is transferred to the rear wheels through a silky smooth six-speed automatic gearbox. The results are a 0-60 time of around 5 seconds and electronically governed top speed of 155MPH. The engine bay is tidy with no obvious signs of damage or leaks.

On our cold start the car fired up easily and settled to a steady even idle with that characteristic V8 burble and emissions appeared clear.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was smooth with no rattles, bumps or untoward noises. The car glided along and absorbed the unevenness of the road surface with ease.

On braking the car pulled up quickly and evenly without pulling to either side. All characteristic of Jaguar engineering.

The Drive

Superb! On our short drive with Ashley the car demonstrated is sublime roadholding, awesome power and comfort. This is a luxury carriage indeed and it’s no surprise that these cars were the choice of royalty.

The V8 power is aided by the lightweight aluminium chassis of the XJ, on which the Daimler is based, making this car 200kg lighter than the previous models.

Electrics and Other

These cars are comprehensively equipped offering, among other things electric windows, climate control, audio system and satellite navigation. Both front and rear seats are powered.

Ashley advises there are a couple of electrical niggles probably resulting from under use. There is a parking brake amber warning light on the dash, not an MOT failure because the electric park brake works perfectly. Also, the key fob seems underpowered, it will lock and unlock the car when held close to the dash, but outside of the car it doesn't work. The key has to be used to lock and unlock, thereby setting the alarm and needing ignition key entry fairly quickly. Lastly the air conditioning, whilst clearly blowing cool and therefore 'working', is not blowing adequately cold and does need recharging.

Otherwise, all switchgear, dials and gauges look in good condition.
