Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The last iteration and Ferrari's last production 2+2 mid-engined coupe, the T was a revolution that shaped the way for more than just the Mondial.

The Mondial began life in 1980, and had taken over from where the 308GT4 left off, with the same mid-mounted 3L V8, but on a longer wheelbase. The body shape was penned by Pininfarina, creating a comfortable 2+2 with generous accommodation.

With the introduction of the Mondial T in 1989, a number of very important changes took place; power was increased to 300BHP, a transverse-mounted 3.4L V8 (a layout still used today), a wider track, along with some design tweaks to the exterior, and new luxurious interior trim, air-con, and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.
This example is coming to market from ~5 years ownership. This very car was used as a front cover feature car in August 2018's issue of Classic and Sports Car magazine along with a full article on the Mondial T.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Martyn the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This Mondial T is a magazine star, having been featured on the front cover of Classic and Sports Car.

Martyn fancied something a little more exotic for the weekends, trading in a 911 for a Mondial T when the opportunity arose. He has thoroughly enjoyed it, covering some ~2,500 miles in his 5 years of ownership.

Take a look at the history and paperwork section to see the extensive history, main dealer in the current ownership, throughout the past 32 years. Martyn will be happy to answer any of your questions about the Ferrari in the comments below.

Exterior

Pininfarina penned a design that is now firmly an 80s retro style; sharp lines, low to the ground and those era defining pop-up headlights.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 16" classic Ferrari 5-spoke star-shaped alloys, the wheels look in great shape all around with only the slightest signs of surface corrosion beginning to appear on the front nearside alloy.

The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli Cintirato P7's dated 2018, take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the wheels and tyres on this Mondial T.

Bodywork

The Mondial T featured a wider track to improve the handling, this manifests itself in the form of new front and rear wings and give the car a more balanced look compared to the previous iteration. The bodywork on this example appears in great condition in line with the age and mileage of the car. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking very good, as you would expect from a supercar.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The classic colourway, "Rosso Corsa" over cream leather, is arguably the best selection for any Ferrari. The finish of the paintwork is to a good standard - it looks even in colour and finish across all the panels.

We did notice some very light stone chips to the front bumper in line with the age and mileage. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The black trim around the car of the car appears in good condition. In 2005 there is a receipt for painting all the black trim, including mirrors and lower valances.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks or discolouration noticed. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this Ferrari Mondial T.

Interior

In 1985 the interior received a welcome refresh and dashboard update, this example has aged very well.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with cream leather Ferrari seats, which look in good condition, just showing slight signs of use in the form of wear to the driver's bolsters and age related creases.

The seats, door cards, headlining and deep red carpet look in good condition. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic three-spoke Ferrari steering wheel is fitted along with an aluminium 5-speed gearstick, a simple affair before air-bags made them much larger - both items appear in great condition in line with the rest of the car.

Mechanics

A big power jump for these later models, thanks to a transverse-mounted 3.4L V8 - the layout vastly improved the handling dynamics.

Engine and Gearbox

The 'T' was a nod to the car's new engine/transmission layout, the same layout which was used on the 80's Formula 1 cars. It also pointed to the future of the Ferrari V8s as shortly after this layout was to be used in the 348 and is still used today, the layout allowing the engine to be mounted with a lower centre of gravity to improve dynamics.

This 300BHP classic will hit 60mph from a standstill in just 5.6 seconds, not bad going for a 2+2 from the 80s. We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting, please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car. In the current ownership, the car has been served by the main dealers Lancaster Ferrari.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mondial T was the first Ferrari to use power brakes, power steering, and electronically controlled suspension.

Martyn reports that the brakes provide prompt stopping power, capable of taming the high-performance 3.4L prancing horse, and with suspension offering a firm focused drive, which gives the driver complete confidence.

The Drive

A ground-breaking Ferrari, that was not only practical with its 2+2 layout, but also wasn't short on power thanks to the mid-engined 300BHP 3.4L. The "T" is a totally different car from the older model, the wider track, electronically controlled suspension settings and engine mounting position meant a much improved car when it came to handling and ride.

Electrics and Other

Martyn reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge apart from the sunroof which hasn't been tested. A more modern stereo system has been fitted as pictured.

History and Paperwork

With its 2+2 layout, 300BHP V8 and improved handling dynamics, the much maligned reputation of the earlier iterations actually makes the T a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Take a look through the extensive history file this car comes with, you'll find MOT certificates, main dealer Ferrari service stamps, receipts for parts and work carried out, along with the Classic and Sports car magazine this example was featured and photographed in. Martyn reports a cambelt service is due shortly, and the car was last MOT'd in September. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
