Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

~316BHP from a mid-mounted V8 engine, striking aerodynamics and in cabriolet form... the 348 is 90s Ferrari through and through.

Originally released in 1989 to replace the outgoing 328, the 348 took on design cues from the Testarossa. It was the last V8 model to be developed under the stewardship of Enzo Ferrari, launched to the public after his passing. Design revisions in 1993 were both stylistic and performance based, output was increased from ~289BHP to ~316BHP through an improved engine management and exhaust system.

This example is the Spider, featuring a 2 inch wider track and customised body parts, it was the first convertible Ferrari model since the Daytona Spider. Major work was actioned on this UK RHD by renowned Ferrari specialists Rardley in 2021, coming in at a cost of ~£10,000 covering amongst a thorough servicing including all belts, suspension overhaul and new clutch. The car has just had some more maintenance work and a fresh MOT, now ready for sale, this manual open gated V8 is certainly ready for a new owner to enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after visiting and photographing the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A mid-engined V8 Ferrari Spider, what's not to like!

Nick has the bug for fast cars, he's lucky enough to have owned Ferrari's in the past as well as some 911's. He purchased the car a year ago, and has enjoyed using it in the Spring/Summer months.

He's had the car thoroughly gone over by Rardley when he purchased the car, this included a major service with all belts replaced, clutch replacement, suspension attended to, new tyres all round and the typical interior "sticky bits" worked on. With the recent purchase of a manual Ferrari 360 Spider, he's putting the 348 up for sale. Nick will be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in Giallo Fly, this 348 is no shrinking violet, it's a classic Ferrari colour that suits extrovert styling of this model.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on this example are excellent condition, the alloy, badge and nuts. The car has been fitted with new tyres as part of the prep work, 4x new Michellin tyres which are of course in excellent condition. Take a look at the picture gallery to see the details.

Bodywork

The Spider version of the 348 was released in 1993 and featured some changes over and above the folding roof; a specially designed engine cover, body coloured lower valances etc and a 2 inch wider track on the rear of the car.

On this example, the bodywork looks in good condition with even shut lines and panel gaps across the car. There is a small dent to the passenger side door handle, the underside of the car looks incredibly tidy after the major work last year, with no signs of corrosion present. The folding roof has some wear in places as pictured, what you would expect for a car of this age and mileage. Watch the video review to see the bodywork in detail.

Paint

Finished in Giallo Fly, it's a great choice for a Ferrari Spider we think, it screams the early 90s with the pop-up headlights. This car has covered some ~59,800 miles over the course of its life, and so there is the odd stone chip etc that comes with age, and the car has likely been repainted in the past too. View the picture gallery to see all the body panels up close.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car is in very good condition, the windscreen having seen a replacement in the past. The trim on the car all look to be original items, they present in good condition with solid colours etc, it's only if you get up really close and are scrutinising that you can see signs of ageing present.

Interior

A typical smart Nero finish to this Ferrari cabin, but the star of the show is definitely the open gated shifter.

Seats and Carpets

The seats and carpets are all finished in Nero, the seat are in good condition. The passenger seat shows very little sign of wear, the drivers seat cushion has signs of cracking of the leather which would benefit from some TLC, the back of both seats have some marks. The car is fitted with over-mats that have a Giallo trim to them, a nice touch.

Dashboard

Classic deep instrument dials with the striking orange colour used by Ferrari, excellent legibility, they make you want to drive the car at night to see them lit up.

The rest of the leather wrapped dashboard is in very good condition, the centre console having been worked on by Rardley as part of the their work last summer.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The star of the show with this interior is of course the open gated shifter for the manual gearbox, it looks in very good polished condition. The classic 3 spoke steering wheel looks great in Nero leather too, from a simpler time with just the horn button in the centre.

Mechanics

A later Ferrari 348 that pushed out ~316BHP when new, the model was the start of the mid-mounted V8 spiders for the marque.

Engine and Gearbox

3.4 litres with 8 valves per cylinder, later cars like this one featured the Bosch Motronic 2.7 system that helped to increase the power output in conjunction with the modified exhaust.

This car has undergone a major service at Rardley Motors last year/~400 miles ago, where along with all the belts being replaced, a new clutch has been fitted. Watch the car fire up and some footage on the road, a very impressive V8.

Suspension and Brakes

As part of the service work last summer, all suspension components were checked resulting in a range of bushes being replaced. The brake fluid was also changed as part of the service work. On the drive, we felt the car had a nice ride quality, no knocks/rattles relating to the suspension were observed.

The Drive

These cars are definitely iconic with the striking design, but the drive is where all the fun is, Nick tells us "I love how it makes me feel when i drive it with the roof down, listening to the V8 engine behind my seat".

Mid-mounted V8 spiders are definitely something Ferrari are known for now, these 90s car helped to spawn that reputation.

Electrics and Other

This car really had a thorough going over, the air conditioning has been re-gassed and tested and is said to blow cold. The rubberised areas around the controls were also cleaned to stop the infamous "sticky bits" that some Ferrari's are known for. Some other electrical maintenance has also been actioned recently, alongside the MOT.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD Spider which has had ~£10,000 spent on a major service, this Giallo Fly 348 is ready for the road.

Coming to auction from ~1 year ownership, in the summer last year when purchased, Rardley Motors actioned a major service. Please take a look at the service invoice to see all the items they covered, the bill coming to ~£10,000, major items being belts service, new clutch, suspension overhaul and 4 new tyres. The car comes with a host of invoices and service receipts/stamps covering its life, up to the current mileage of ~59,800.

The car comes with its toolkit as pictured, and the registration "F15 PDA" is included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
