Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A voluptuous V8 Ferrari with a nod to practicality and no compromise to its focus

The California is something of a milestone for Ferrari, launching the car in 2008 as a usable 2+2 V8 GT car which isn't limited to just an occasion treat. Ferrari, by moving the engine up front, offered a provision to comfort and practicality but still didn't sacrifice its communication and agility. Notable for being Ferrari's first coupe-cabrio and the first to be fitted with a dual-clutch gearbox, Ferrari focused the car to appeal to a wider audience, offering a luxurious cabin quality and sensible driving aids.

But let's be clear, this is no soft option. A focused driving machine, with some beautiful styling touches, ranging from the vertically mounted exhausts to the wing-mounted vents, the California acts as a genuine alternative to the usual luxury GTs with a touch of exclusivity.

With just 3 owners and 41,932 on the clock, this 2012 Argento Nurburgring / Silver Ferrari California is fitted with the automatic 7-speed dual-clutch. Delivered with the optional Handling Speciale kit, it is beautifully presented throughout. The owner has maintained its condition by virtue of a specialist storage facility.

Importantly the car has 9 service stamps, three keys and has an MOT to March 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As a 2+2 GT car it suited my needs perfectly, with both comfort and style.

Richard has an enviable past with Italian sports cars, so opting for a Ferrari was a natural solution.

Richard has used the car on a regular basis but has not added much more than 700 miles a year on it - he has trusted the storage of the car with a well-known classic car specialist, which has allowed the car to retain its almost flawless presentation.

Having owned the car for 4 years, Richard has thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but plans to go old-school with its possible replacement.

Exterior

Beautifully presented, you'd be pushed to tell its true age

Wheels and Tyres.

The alloys are all in excellent shape, all free of any marks or road wear.

The Bridgestone Potenza tyres have some wear, but all are within the legal limits and not flagged up as advisories on the recent MOT.

Bodywork

The body is free from any notable issues, with the underside and inner wings all appearing good. The external bodywork has no significant blemishes and it is free of dents or any signs of damage.

The owner has pointed out a tiny little ding on the hood cover, only visible when the roof is down, but we couldn’t spot any discernible issues otherwise. The panel fit is flush, with even panel gaps.

All of the doors freely open without obstruction.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Argento Nurburgring / Silver paint has an even coverage, with a decent lustre. There are a few minor surface marks in places, but overall stands up as a well cared for example which has been stored over the last four years at a specialist facility.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is free of damage, commensurate with the age of the car with decent seals throughout. The hood cover has a plastic film, which shows very light signs of age, but no apparent damage to the paint.

The trim is all intact, the bumpers are flush and there were no marks or signs of age noted on the lighting and lenses.

The car has the Handling Speciale upgrade package, which is externally identified by the silver front grill and wing-mounted vents.

Interior

A lavish interior presentation with some exquisite details, this car has been really looked after.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats have lasted well, with nothing more than light ceases noted on the driver's side.

The cabin carpets are intact, with decent mats.

There is some wear noted on the boot carpet, but nothing drastic.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good order, and the leather and stitching are all intact.

The head unit screen has light surface marks but is fully operational.

The centre console has a handful of age-related marks and some of the rubber buttons show a little wear, but overall not a distraction.

The binnacle is in good shape, with clearly legible dials and all of the controls are said to be functional by Richard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition with no significant marks, and the paddle shifters and buttons are in the same good condition too.

Mechanics

The glorious scream of the V8 with its pitch-perfect exhausts reminds you of what you're sitting in.

Engine and Gearbox

In 2012 Ferrari launched the '30' - this increased the bhp to 490 thanks to new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s generous rev range - so important considerations when buying a California, i.e. a 2012 onwards car will be more desirable.

Our 30 fires up with no hesitation, with no warning lights noted on the dashboard. The engine settles to idle very smoothly with no undulations or unwanted noises. The car did not display any fluid leaks on the day.

The engine displays well, with plenty of evidence of good maintenance, with intact hoses and ancillaries.

The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission was proven to work perfectly, with the owner demonstrating this in the on-the-road video.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has been fitted with the optional HS (Handling Speciale) package, which includes ECU control dampers and stiffer springs. The magnetohorological suspension allows a more focused driving experience, which is enhanced by its quicker steering ratio. The ride was free of any knocks or rattles, dealing with speed humps with no issues.

The car is fitted with carbon-ceramic discs and optional red calipers; all in excellent shape with no ill effects noted on their performance.

The Drive

A comfortable and civil cabin, with a high degree of quality, were the most remarkable aspects of being treated to a ride in the California. Around town it drives civilly with the auto gearbox being well, suited to the staggered traffic of town. The owner has not experienced any issues in terms of oil pressure to engine temperatures and has told us it has been reliable while he has owned it.

The steering was free from any wobbles, and while we had the roof up, no significant vibrations or unwanted noises at lower speeds. The car felt remarkably taut, with no outstanding concerns in regard to the ride. We were also offered a little blast of acceleration, which is what the car Ferrari is all about - a glorious noise and rather addictive.

Electrics and Other

The roof mechanism has been subject to a recent service, including a replacement solenoid, and is working seamlessly with no unexpected motor noise.

History and Paperwork

It comes complete with a very good service history record and £2,600 worth of bills over the last two years.

First registered on the 19th of April 2012, the car was registered by HR Owen and has been in London ever since. Recent spending for £1,625, includes a 2022 service and interior trim replacements, along with a 2021 £1,056 bill from Cayman, the convertible roof repairs specialist to service and replace a sensor of the roof mechanism.

The car comes with 9 service stamps, three keys and its owner's wallet. The car has a long MOT, to March 2024 and comes with an indoor cover.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
