Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consignor

The Fiat 500, much like the Mini and Beetle, is a genuine icon of the drive toward mass mobilisation after World War Two, as such this little 3-meter long gem needs little introduction.

This little Fiat commands a cult status for reasons that become obvious as soon as you see one in the metal or take a ride in one. It's an icon of the automotive world and won hearts as soon as it rolled off the Italian firm's production lines back in the 50s. Today the car is still as popular as ever providing a great entry point to practical and affordable classic car ownership.

To give this car its full title from the original Italian registration documents this is a Fiat 110F Berlina 500, or more commonly a Fiat 500F. The "F" spans a 1965 to 1973 production period and was differentiated from its predecessor, the "D," by having front hinged doors for the first time.

This car spent the first 45 years of its life in its homeland before being imported to the UK in 2015, the current owner purchasing the car 2 years ago and 2 other owners in the UK.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Janie the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We've had a great couple of years with our little 500 and have been on many adventures together. She's never let us down and its always been fun!

Janie acquired the little Fiat two years ago and, considering the Covid limitations, has used the little car regularly during that time! This has ranged from daily transport to holidays and road trips to Norfolk and Wales to name but two.

It is really only the needs of other projects and the arrival of some classic motorcycles which has precipitated this reluctant sale. Janie will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Blue Florence paintwork is a great colour for the 500F, it only adds to the car's charm and seems to further encourage smiles, waves and compliments from those around.

Wheels and Tyres

We think the wheels look great and appear to have been refurbished or replaced in the car's recent history - all have attractive "witch's hat" chrome hub caps that are in equally good condition.

The car also features matching Michelin 125 R12 62S tyres which were fitted in 2020 and retain a good tread depth all round. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a full in-depth tour of the exterior.

Bodywork

As cute as it is curvy, the attractive Italian shape from the 50s never fails to turn heads wherever you travel. All the bodywork appears great on this example, with the panel gaps and shut lines looking tight and true.

We did notice what appears to be some slight corrosion to the nearside rear wheel arch as pictures, the only area that stood out of note to us. Watch the exterior review video to see all the bodywork.

Paint

The car appears to have been repainted at some point before coming to the UK, and the majority of the "Blue Florence" paint is deep and lustrous and looks professionally applied.

There are some areas of potential improvement evident. There's the odd significant scratch like low down on the offside door, and the area of paint to the rear of the sunroof has noticeable cracking. Thanks to the very good condition of the majority of the paintwork these areas are only really obvious when you're looking to critique the car.

Please view the extensive videos and photographs to see the condition in detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in good condition all around. The brightwork trim around the windows and the rubber seals look to be in good condition.

The chrome bumpers, mirrors and headlight surrounds too look the part on this Fiat 500F, helping to create a very positive impression overall.

Interior

The 500F's cabin is a lesson in less is more automotive design, it's so refreshing with nothing superfluous or showy being deemed worthy of inclusion.

Seats and Carpets

The seats present very well and are the original items, Janie informs us. The smooth tan vinyl is not only very practical but is in a great complimentary colour too.

Carpet mats are in place over the original rubber mat set that would have been standard fare in a 1970 500F. Please take time to review the interior media pack to view the interior in more detail.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car's interior, a really nice example. Smart but very minimalistic dashboard and instrument cluster, including the very retro ashtray.

The dashboard is body coloured and appears free from damage or obvious imperfection. The instruments consist of a big speedometer in KM/h, and some integral warning lights. In true practical Fiat fashion the change up points are detailed on the speedo too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic Fiat 500, twin spoke white steering wheel can be found in this example. It presents very well and appears to be free from obvious damage.

The gear lever features a quirky and individual gear knob which, we presume, was fitted by a previous owner. All part of the charm!

We have captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior.

Mechanics

The Fiat 500F is small and nimble with its raspy 0.5L engine, ideal for agile countryside or city driving, it's surprisingly nippy and seems to handle hills with ease.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is powered by a smooth yet nippy 0.5L V2 engine. Rear engined, air-cooled, these motors have an iconic sound to match the looks. This is mated to a 4 speed gearbox that powers the rear wheels, the set-up gives the car a very nimble feel darting through traffic.

Please watch the 'On the Road' video to see and hear the engine running starting from stone cold and running well on the way to our photo location.

Suspension and Brakes

Janie reports that the car is a joy to drive and stops well. We certainly noticed no unexpected bumps or thumps from the suspension during our ride in the car. It seemed very well suited to the country bumpy lanes we were traversing.

The Drive

Janie has covered some big distances in this little Fiat and is clearly very taken with the spirit and verve in which the little car takes these journeys in its stride. It is very hard to suppress a big grin when travelling in the Fiat 500. It seems to encapsulate something of the Italian zest for life in its makeup.

Electrics and Other

The car features a vinyl sunroof which retracts and allows sun, air and light to flood the cabin on dry days.

These are pretty simple cars. Little in the way of electrical systems and no complicated ECUs to worry about.

History and Paperwork

Resident in its homeland for the first 45 years of its life, this 500 comes with some interesting original Italian documentation and a fascinating, and detailed, original owner's manual.

The Fiat 500 has some interesting provenance in place in the shape of a good deal of original Italian registration and ownership documents from across its life in its homeland. There is also documentation relating to the import to the UK in 2015 and registration number allocation, duties and the like. The current V5 is on hand as are a number of invoices relating to recommissioning and maintenance work undertaken since its import.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi
I’m new to this. I thought the vehicle was located in lemington spa? If I were to win the auction I’d have to travel from Bristol!

Thanks

Andrew

Hi, the vehicle is located in Slawston, Leicestershire as mentioned at the top of the listing and also in the panel below. The cars remain with the owners during auction, rather than coming to our office in Leamington Spa.

Kind regards
Natalia
