Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The iconic, fun, and carefree car that beat mini into production by 2 years makes a return - this time in matt black.

In '67 Fiat released the 500L, a "richly" trimmed and better-appointed car than the standard 500F.

The 500L gained tubular guard protecting the front bumper and corners of the rear. redesigned hub caps, bright trim, anti-glare dashboard, a new trapezoid instrument binnacle and more storage space. Except for the tyres the 500L mechanics were identical to the 500F - why fix something when it's not broken!

This 1970s example owned by Ben has a bit of a "rat look" about it; matt paint, bumper guards removed. It's a fresh unregistered import having been restored in Italy with the engine being rebuilt too.

This auction listing was written by Jacob after liaising with Ben the owner, who photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As small as these cars are, owning two of them is probably a bit much!

Ben a Fiat enthusiast, had the opportunity to import a couple of classic Fiat 500's a few months ago and snapped at the chance. This matt black example with red interior, and a classic blue over tan example too. One of his motivations to get two in to the country was the looming VAT that as it stands will start to apply from the 1st January 2021, when the new trading arrangements between the UK and EU starts.

This car was restored around 2-3 years ago, where it was painted in matt black, and the mechanics of the car having had a thorough going through. Ben informs us that the engine was rebuilt at the time as part of the work.

CONTACT OWNER

Exterior

An iconic form with classic styling, it puts a smile on everyones face and we love it too.

Wheels and Tyres

Classic Fiat 500 wheels with chrome hub caps fitted all round.

When looking around the wheels we think they look great, however, have a few age related marks in places - overall a nice set of wheels.

The car also features matching continental tyres on each wheel that Ben has had fitted.

Bodywork

Looking around the car, all the panel gaps look good on this little number, correct for a car of this age.

All the bodywork looks good with the car having been stored since restoration.

Please take a look at the detailed exterior photographs for a closer look.

Paint

Finished in matt black, it gives the car a "rat look" about it, the kind of thing you'd expect to see whizzing about the streets of Milan or Torino.

Please take a look at the photographs for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

Inline with the rest of the car, the glass and trim are in great condition.

As part of the restoration work, replacement rubber window seals have been fitted.

Please view the photographs for a closer look at the trim and glass.

Interior

A fully reupholstered interior, the red vinyl really makes this car pop.

Seats and Carpets

Reupholstered in a vibrant red finish, and new black carpets throughout give the car a crisp finish on the interior.

Dashboard

The 500L saw a new and improved trapezoid instrument binnacle replacing the round one used on all other 500 models.

Ben has kept the original instruments and this example looks in great condition. You'll often see the plastic has warped on these, but this one looks good. He also reports everything is working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Lovely to see the original Fiat 500L steering wheel in black plastic with metal spokes.

Both the gearstick and steering wheel look to be in great original condition, please take a look for yourself in the interior photographs.

Mechanics

Perfect middle ground for the small and nimble body weight, a 0.5L engine with raspy exhaust note to go with it.

Engine and Gearbox

When the car was restored, the engine was rebuilt too and Ben reports a very smooth yet nippy 0.5L engine. During the rebuild, an improved synchro gearbox was fitted for smoother gear changes.

Please feel free to ask Ben any questions in the comments below, and please take a look at the mechanical photographs.

Suspension and Brakes

Ben reports a lovely ride in the 500L and mentions the car stops exactly as it should too without any issues.

Please view the mechanical and exterior photos for a closer look at the brakes.

The Drive

Ben reports the car drives as it should. Maybe the new owner will be able to share the experience of a drive with Ben in his other blue 500.

Electrics and Other

The car features a vinyl sunroof which has been attended to in the restoration.

These are pretty simple cars, built to help the Italian economy and people get back on the road after the war, no complicated ECUs to worry about.

History and Paperwork

Freshly imported, a restored and rebuilt original from Italy really stands out on the roads today.

Finished in matt black with red interior, this is a fresh import that hasn't been registered yet. Ben has paid the tax as per the email which has been included. The new owner will need to get a letter from Fiat(FCA) to verify the production date etc and then register the car in the UK.

We think this is a great LHD 500L example that really stands out and will put a massive grin on your face as soon as you get in it.

We have actioned a check on the sellers ID alone.

Hey Mike, thanks for your interest. I’ll let Ben answer your colour questions. I can let you know that the reserve isn’t published. But Ben has set it low so it should sell at auction. Best just to bang a bid in if you like it 🙂 Cheers Adam
