Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Simplistic, stylish and a charming Italian classic - the Fiat 500 is instantly recognisable and loved by all.

The Fiat 500 has resonated with the public for over 65 years, and indeed with Fiat themselves who leaned heavily on the design for a series of their modern output. However, its appeal goes way beyond the cheeky styling. Its nimble handling, clever packaging and fuel efficiency were purpose-built for narrow streets and set the benchmark for the city car.

The Fiat 500 L or “Lusso”, features some choice upgrades over its lesser spec'd counterpart, the 500 F, these include a better trimmed interior, tubular front and rear bumper guards, a newly designed Fiat badge and are often considered the best options.

This left hand drive example is in lovely condition, having spent the first ~42 years of its life in Italy before being imported to the UK in 2015. The 500 L has only 1 previous UK owner, an electronic ignition upgrade, new front axles and steering knuckles fitted.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Claire the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had many adventures with the little 500, it's got such a quirky character and is so much fun to drive.

There's something so characteristic about the little 500 L. With its lovely details and Italian styling, the Fiat is a car that is adored by its current owner, Claire said, "I love my little car, its been with me for a few years now and its such a fun drive, I get a great feeling in it when I'm out on the road".

Having spent most of its past few years stored in the garage, the time has come for Claire to part ways with her beloved Fiat and help find a home where someone will love it as much as she has.

Should any questions be required with regards the car, Claire would be happy to answer these below.

Exterior

The charm and appeal of the 500 L is equally relevant in modern day motoring as it was back in the '70s - a timeless classic that is sure to attract a lot of positive attention.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels feature the iconic chrome hubcaps, synonymous with the “Lusso” variant Fiat 500 - these show in great condition with no significant marks and only very minor signs of wear.

The wheels are wrapped with Deestone tyres which look in great condition and appear to have plenty of tread remaining.

Take a look through the gallery section to see more detail on the 500 L.

Bodywork

Panels align nicely and we could see no visible distortion to these areas.

Shut lines and panel gaps look good and both doors and front boot section open and close well.

We did note a small ding on the leading edge on the bonnet area.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car looks in good condition with the dark blue finish shining up very well in the sunshine.

The paint cover was consistent over the panels and didn't present any concerns with the paint coverage. There was a very minor blemish in the paint on the near side rear panel edge, although we had to look pretty closely to spot this.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows and lenses all appear in very good condition with no cracks or significant scratching.

Looking over the fold-down soft-top roof, the fabric looked excellent and showed with barely a mark on this area.

The trim pieces across the car are all in great condition, with no visible scuffs, scratches, or any other defects that would take away from the vehicle's appearance.

Interior

With a minimalist design, the 500 L packs in tons of charm and charisma inside its smaller stature.

Seats and Carpets

The lovely red seats are in very good condition, i.e. without issue and only minor wear to the edge of the material.

The shaped carpets in the cabin are also in great condition, with minimal signs of age. There is a slight sign of scuffing closest to the drivers footwell but nothing that caused any real concern.

Inside the boot is clean and tidy, and the spare wheel is present.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console display very well, with no evidence of cracks or significant damage. Minimalist dials and controls look really great and reflective of the era of the car.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Fiat's dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is present with the smart red Fiat emblem.

The gear stick is in good order with a minor amount of age related wear, again, nothing that was a concern.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Small and nimble, the 500 L is a really sprightly car perfect for city traffic but equally at home around the town.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started up from cold without concern and the little Fiat performed without issue when running and out on the road.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. On the drive, we run through the motions, taking the 500 L through to top gear and getting an overview from Claire's perspective on how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

Having had its front axles and steering knuckles replaced in October 2022, the steering performed well.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal and worked in line with the expectations of a 500.

The Drive

Simplistic motoring doesn't often come with as much fun as the experience you get with the 500 L. Light and small, but with a little bit of pace to keep up with the town traffic, the Fiat packs in so much charm into its shapely Italian curves.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the 500 L are relatively simple and represent the minimalist stylings of the car.

All switches and gauges look in good condition for its history, and are all reported to be working without concern by the current owner.

The vinyl roof was checked and operated with no issue which we've also highlighted in our review video.

History and Paperwork

Coming from ~7 year ownership and 1 UK owner, this lovely little 500 is ready for its next owner.

Imported from Italy in 2015, the car had spent its previous ~42 years overseas in its native home.

The Fiat has benefitted from an electrical ignition upgrade in August 2019 at a cost of over ~£340 and more recently had its front axles and steering knuckles replaced in October 2022 which cost the current owner ~£686.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Couple of questions for the owner please

1. Do you know if the car has the original engine and gearbox?
2. Leaded or unleaded petrol?

Thanks,
Stewart
