Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The second-generation Fiat 500 is arguably one of the most iconic cars ever produced.

Debuting in 1957, the much-loved Fiat 500 was a radical departure from its predecessor’s pre-war design. The new model featured unitary construction, an opening roof, and all-independent suspension, with the engine mounted at the rear. Equipped with an air-cooled overhead-valve twin engine and a four-speed gearbox, the 500 provided ample power for city driving, with a compact, rounded shape ideal for easy manoeuvring and parking.

This example is fitted with a 499cc engine and a 4-speed gearbox, finished in black with a red leather and carpeted interior. The car is coming to market after approximately six years of ownership. The current owner first saw the car for sale after it was imported and didn’t want to miss the opportunity to own such a classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Robyn the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always dreamed of owning a Fiat 500 from a young age, and when I saw this car up for sale, I couldn’t resist making it mine.

Robyn is a huge Fiat 500 fan. Since she was young, she always dreamed of owning one, and with her first car being a modern Fiat 500, she was thrilled to find this classic example, purchasing it with the intent of keeping it forever.

Robyn reports that the car has served her well over the past six years, she has fitted a reconditioned starter motor, a new oil pump, crankshaft pulley, clutch, timing chain, crankshaft thrust washer, oil sling filter seal, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, sump gasket, timing chain gasket, oil pick-up gasket, oil pressure sensor, and a new battery. However, due to moving out, travelling, and losing access to a garage, Robyn has decided to bring the car to auction with us.

Robyn will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

With its iconic styling and compact design the Fiat 500 is instantly recognisable worldwide.

Wheels and Tyres

The 12" wheels, finished with chrome hubcaps, look in great condition.

The wheels are fitted with Victoria tyres, dated 2001, which also appear to be in fair condition - they have some remaining tread with signs of age, including very minor areas of cracking on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Fiat 500 looks to be in good overall condition, with the panel gaps appearing to align well around the car, although there is an issue with closing the passenger door, it closes on the first latch but not the second. During our visit, we didn't notice any obvious dings or dents on the bodywork, just a few very small scratches and scuffs around the rear wheel arches.

There are also some small areas of bubbling and corrosion around the front indicators and near the canvas roof.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in black, the paint is applied with even coverage and colour across each panel. The car looked great in the sun during our visit, with some very small signs of wear that show the car's originality and character.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Fiat 500 looks good. During our visit, we didn’t notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, consistent with the overall presentation of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition too. The same applies to the car's brightwork. The folding roof is fully functional.

We've provided more detailed observations in our high-resolution images and videos.

Interior

The cabin feels larger than it actually is, with comfortable seats; red with black piping and a simple dashboard that allows you to enjoy every journey.

Seats and Carpets

The red vinyl seats have maintained their shape very well over the years, with the same being true for the door cards and carpets.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please refer to the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in black and features a classic single central dial.

The dashboard of this 500 appeared to be original and seemed to function well, with no warning lights present.

The odometer showed a reading of ~59,308 km during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Fiat-branded steering wheel is fitted, which is in good condition, featuring a metal horn rim inset.

The black stalks are also in good condition, and the car features a black gearstick that shows signs of age, as you would expect for a car ~51 years old.

For a closer look, please check the image gallery for more detail.

Mechanics

Powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled overhead-valve twin engine and a four-speed gearbox, this iconic classic is perfect for city driving.

Engine and Gearbox

On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road. The engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran well.

Robyn reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well, with its smooth manual four-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels. The clutch was replaced in 2019.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Fiat 500 and its tidy engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth ride on the local roads Bath has to offer.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect from a city car of this era, coming to a stop without any fuss.

The Drive

What an iconic car, perfect for days out around the country or a city break. The Fiat 500 offers a very fun driving experience, and Robyn has enjoyed using the car around Bath and on days out during her ownership.

The Fiat 500 fired up on the first attempt with no issues to report. On the road with Robyn, the car felt tight, with plenty of power to navigate the road. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Robyn reports that all the electrics are functional and operational, which aligns with the overall condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Owned by the vendor for the past six years and imported to the UK in 2018, this classic has received the mechanical attention it deserves while maintaining its original charm.

The car is coming out of a ~6 year ownership with Robyn. Purchased back in 2018, just after it had been imported to the UK from Italy, and then made roadworthy. In its time with Robyn the Fiat 500 has received; a reconditioned starter motor, a new oil pump, crankshaft pulley, timing chain, clutch, crankshaft thrust washer, oil sling filter seal, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, sump gasket, timing chain gasket, oil pick-up gasket, oil pressure sensor, and a new battery. Robyn has a set of spare wheels and a luggage rack not currently fitted to the car, these are included in the sale, you can see photos of them in the history section gallery.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT report, servicing and parts this Fiat 500 has received over its life in the UK.

The Fiat 500 is road tax and MOT exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
