Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The very definition of a modern classic, Fiats in-house design team created something very unique.

Launched in 1993, the Fiat Coupe was a revelation in the world of family coupes. With the styling to match the road-holding, the cars inherent talents were reinforced by the inclusion of the ~220BHP 20V Turbo version. The chassis could handle the extra power gifted to the Turbo, which in turn made it one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars of its generation. Fiat had gone some way into improving quality and its positive driver feedback and roomy cabin complemented the brutal power available.

The current owner of this 1999 20V Turbo has owned the car since 2005, and this example has been gifted with a genuinely careful ownership profile over that period. With just over ~50K on the clock, this two-owner car is the very definition of a modern classic and presents itself as the perfect opportunity to obtain one of Fiat's most talented cars. It comes with a year's MOT, excellent service history and has seen not much more than ~3,000 miles of use in the last 9 years.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Victor the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I inherited the car in 2005, and have loved using it as a casual runabout around town.

Victor obtained the Fiat after the passing of his sister, who had owned it since almost new. Used as nothing more than a runabout locally and social journeys, the car has been carefully driven, with its 220BHP kept well under wraps.

The recent implementation of the ULEZ charge and an increasing lack of use has hastened the sale of the car. Victor will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Still attracting complements, the styling has never lost its impact.

Wheels and Tyres

Being a London car, it is somewhat inevitable that it has picked up a few scrapes and marks on the 16" alloys over the years, so while they do not appear to be severely damaged, a refurb might be worth considering. The tyres are mixed brands, with the front items matching and dating from around 5 years old. All have a decent level of tread.

Bodywork

Designed by the in-house Fiat team, they were up against Pininfarina, the Fiat management opting for this striking design. The overall impression suggests that the car is structurally solid with no significant issues in regards to corrosion. The floor pan, engine bay, boot floor and inner wings look positive. Externally there are a handful of minor dents, the main ones appearing on the off-side rear wing and door panel and the odd scuff noted on the bumpers but all treatable in the hands of a specialist.

The car received a light repair due to corrosion in 2016, namely on the near side rear wing. All doors open and close well, with the struts up to the task. The body panels and bumpers are well placed with decent panel gaps observed. View the extensive gallery to see the detail.

Paint

The Fiat "Broom yellow" paint finish is good throughout, the car retains a pleasing gloss with a handful of minor scuffs on the bumpers but nothing too distracting. There are paint imperfections noted on the car, mainly focused on the near side rear, with under paint spots covering the rear wing and back bumper. The near side corner of the rear bumper shows paint cracks and a paint run. The off-side door has small parking-related chips but overall the car is in good shape and it really wouldn't take much to get up to a high standard.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is free from cracks or chips but does show some signs of de-lamination starting to creep through. The rest of the glass is good, with no issues with their rubber seals and all the door seals are in good condition. The lights covers show a little hazing but could polish up nicely, the rear lenses look good.

Interior

Its well-kept interior is roomy and visually striking with the contrasting yellow touches.

Seats and Carpets

Designed by Pininfarina, the cabin is very well presented, the seats in good shape and with not much in terms of wear or damage. They retain their firmness and reveal no significant blemishes to the cloth fabric.

The carpets are in good condition, with evidence that they have been well cared for and more importantly damp free. The owner pointed out a repair to the driver's side mat. The boot carpet follows the same script and shows a lack of heavy use.

Dashboard

The appealing design of the dashboard is offset by the condition of the centre console, which suffers from age-related stickiness. It's quite a common issue for cars of the era, but it can be treated by specialists. Other than that issue, the facia is reflective of the cars careful use and low mileage and is in good visual shape.

The dials and controls all function, although the speedometer only seems to kick in when the car is used regularly and the indicator stalk doesn't return to neutral after turning left.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, with a little wear noted on the centre, but still presentable. The gearstick and gaiter are in good condition with no significant issues of note.

Mechanics

Its performance and handling ability is still up there with the best front wheel drive cars.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine as demonstrated in the mechanical video is in good health with no reported leaks to report. It idles well, with the start-up in the mild autumn temperature not representing any issues. Once the condensation cleared and it reached temperature the car performed well with no hesitancy or unwanted noises noted with no trouble from the oil pressure light. The gearbox is slick, with no problems with the clutch. The exhaust doesn't blow, although it may be worth keeping an eye on. In 2017 one exhaust manifold stud was broken and a total of three studs replaced together with a new exhaust manifold gasket.

Suspension and Brakes

The car's brakes perform with no issues, with no evidence of fade or vibrations when the car is brought to a halt. During the test drive around town, there were no clonking over the speed humps, or noises coming from the bearings. The steering was true with no wobbles at low speed.

The Drive

During the short drive, the Fiat drove well amongst the traffic. The true potency of the handling and power has not really been unleashed, but its tight maintenance schedule and carefully ownership profile strongly suggest its talents are still likely to be intact. Please note that on the video, the car is incorrectly referred to as a 2000 model, it is actually a 1999 car.

Electrics and Other

The car has no significant issues other than the central locking audio warning alert has been disconnected, as it interfered with the engine start process. The indicator light alert is still functioning. The driver door only unlocks in an anti-clockwise direction. The air-conditioning has a slight leak when in use.

History and Paperwork

Coming from long term family ownership, this car comes with a healthy amount of mechanical upkeep, and relatively low mileage for the age.

Registered for a South West London Fiat dealer in 1999, the car was bought by its second owner when it is was just two months old, possibly suggesting it may have been a Fiat dealer demonstrator car. That owner, the sister of the current owner, retained it for 6 years. Sadly, her passing meant that the car was taken on by her brother in 2005. Victor has kept on top of the car's mechanical demands and continued servicing it regardless of how much he used it. He ensured that it ran and looked as good as possible, with around £2,000 spent during his ownership. The owner has retained all of the MOT's during his time with the car, along with bills that cover tyres, body, exhaust, brake, battery and clutch hydraulic work. The car also has service stamps to 2019 and in preparation for its sale, the N/S/F track rod end, front number plate and battery have been renewed.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

cambelt, tensioners etc should be changed max 6years or 72k miles, whichever comes soonest..so belt is 16years past its due date! You are VERY lucky it’s not gone as the engine would be severely damaged/written off.

So you’ve had it since 2005 and haven’t changed the cambelt, aux belt and waterpump once?? Disaster waiting to happen, you obviously have no idea about maintenance!
