Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A very versatile Rock'n'Roll classic, the later Consul was European car with big classic American styling cues.

Ford upped their game in the 50s with a thoroughly modern monocoque design in conjunction with Briggs Motos Bodies, to utilise the new McPherson Strut independent front suspension setup. Initially, the car was shown in States whereby the Consul filled a gap for mid-range cars with its efficient four-cylinder engine. Later MkII's like this one were part of the three model Zephyr range. Production lasted between 1951 until 1962 by Ford UK.

This example is coming to market from 1 year ownership, having been inherited from the vendors late father last year. It's been in family ownership for as long as the vendor can remember, just 3 former keepers registered with the DVLA, 2 of which were actually her father she believes. It presents in good honest condition, having been restored at some point in the past.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Sara the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've known this car for my entire life, it was my Dad's pride and joy.

Sara's late father owned this Consul 375 MK2 twice in fact, after selling the car to a close friend quickly realised how much he missed driving it and bought it back when it came up for sale again. Sara remembers being driven around in the Consul, back and forth to school as a little girl and has many happy memories associated with it.

She's thoroughly enjoyed the occasional road trip out in the car but with so many memories linked to it, has decided to put the car up for sale. She'll be happy to see it being enjoyed by a like-minded enthusiast. Sara will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

American stylings cues for a European Ford car, these MkII's are a design from a bygone era.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on its original steel wheels with chrome centre caps. The wheels are painted in lime green to match the bodywork, and look generally ok when getting close. A small area of wear and tear along with surface corrosion was visible in places with room for refurbishment.

The wheels are wrapped in white walled Cooper Sportmasters GLE tyres, and do show signs of age in places. Take a look through the photo gallery and video review.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this Consul 375 for its age, all the panels appear fairly straight for a car now 60 years old. When photographing the car we noticed some light areas of corrosion to the front bumper and wings, and some leading edges of panels etc have wear in line with this being an older restoration.

Sara has done her best at preserving the life of this Consul after taking over ownership from her dad, it is an older restoration though and so some aspects like shut-lines could be improved by a new owner. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

We like the colour choice of this two-tone Ford in a light green with a white roof. The finish of the paint is even across the car and it really stands out on the roads today from afar.

We did notice some very minor areas of bubbling around the bottom of the doors, and with this being an older restoration there are chips to the paint here and there and touch up applied over time. Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great, with no obvious signs of cracks, chips, or discolouration.

The trim around the car appears in used condition, showing its age in places, and perishing in some areas. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this Consul 375. Sara reports another front bumper, in better condition is included within the sale.

Interior

Continuing the green theme, the cabin has a certain chic appeal to it now, and again has an American classic feel too.

Seats and Carpets

The dark green vinyl bench seats in the front and rear of the car look in great condition and are showing very little signs of age, hardy material afterall. They have held their shape very well over the previous 60 years. Sara reports comfortable cruising in them too!

Green overmats line the floor, and present in good condition, we noticed some very light marks to the rear offside seat. The green vinyl theme extends to the door cards too, this time a lighter colour closer to the exterior paint.

Dashboard

A classic dashboard straight from the swinging sixties, it is in line with the age and mileage of the car, free from cracks or major wear. It's covered in what looks to be matching vinyl on the top.

Sara reports all the dials, gauges, and buttons are working as expected. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car retains its classic character through its original column gearstick and steering wheel, both items are showing very little signs of age, yet retain the original Ford Consul look.

Mechanics

Powered by a 1,703CC inline-four, it offered ~60BHP which made this a very practical car in the 60s.

Engine and Gearbox

In 1956 Ford released the MK2 featuring a longer wheelbase front disc brakes, and a more powerful engine, the inline-4 1.7L.

The engine bay is presented in a smart condition, with work carried out over the years to keep it in the condition you see today. We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car starting and a view under and around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the clean mechanics. You also hear the car start from cold with no issue, and no untoward smoke from the exhaust. We did go on a short drive in the car which presented no issues, the video file was corrupted though so it is not included.

Suspension and Brakes

Appraised for it's new McPherson Strut independent front suspension, the Consul MK2 offers smooth comfortable cruising on long drives.

Please see the mechanical media pack to observe the overall condition of the suspension and brakes on this Consul.

The Drive

The Ford Consul is full of character and ready to be driven and enjoyed, Sara remembers being driven everywhere in this MKII, a lot of happy memories were had in this car.

Electrics and Other

We love the simple electrical set-up in this classic car, back to the raw driving experience. To Saras knowledge, everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

UK RHD, coming out of long family ownership, this is one very usable classic Consul 375 MKII ready to be enjoyed or improved over time.

The Consul 375 comes with some historical documents, and some photographs throughout Sara's late father's ownership when he had the car restored. Sara reports dry storing the car in her garage and giving the car the required work when required.

The car comes with a range of MOT documents, all pretty much clean in recent times. Sara is more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual checks; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.
