Classy 60's styling, these cars from Americana are often what people think of when you say classic.

Built as a mid-range, large cruising roadster, the Ford Galaxie was built in the USA by Ford for model years 1959 through 1974. The unusual name was used in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race of the 60's and added futuristic type interior styling as well as smart design features. Having been manufactured from 1959 onwards, the Galaxie featured here is a second generation of this model, where the all-new, low and sleek-looking design, had a more rounded, softer rear end look and the "A" pillar was swept forward instead of backward, making entering and exiting the car more convenient. Additionally the Ford came complete with panorama-windows, updated engine and after burner style brake lights.

Made in Canada for the export market, this UK RHD comes to market from ~6.5 year ownership with just 1 former keeper before that. It has covered ~2,000 miles in the last 5 years. In the current owner has had the head skimmed, reseated the engine valves and replaced the valve stem seals. During the mechanical work, the water pump, oil pump and the timing chain set were renewed and the power steering pump overhauled. Meet the owner

The Galaxie cruises along in such a relaxed way and with plenty of style, it's a huge amount of fun.

Nigel had previously owned a Trans Am ~20 years ago and really enjoyed the American car experience. Having been in the market for another American car for a few years, when he saw the Galaxie, both him and his wife fell in love with the car "The car is so right for that retro 60's style with lots of period styling and very beautiful. We couldn't say no to it".

Looking over the Ford its easy to see the car has been well looked after "We loved the colour combination, white with teal blue interior; the fact that it was convertible, had only one owner from new, and, most importantly that it was right hand drive so that sealed the deal". After ~6.5 year ownership, he had the car worked on with some significant engine maintenance and a little cosmetic work early on, now he tells us "I am selling to make room in my garage, and to use the proceeds, to restore another classic car I own". Exterior

Beauty and a really inspiring sense of road presence, a stunning American V8 that has so much going for it.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14" wheels with chrome centre caps, showed in great condition. On the Ford, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to these from our observations.

Wheels are fitted with B.F Goodrich Silvertown tyres and appearing to be in great condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls. They work so well with the look of the car with the white side walls looking great around all four corners.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork looked in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align nicely. On our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings around the car with all panels looking straight and true. The offside door has been reskinned and repainted early in the current ownership.

Paint

The Ford has been previously resprayed and looks really great with stand out with its "Corinthian White" paintwork. The chrome work looks great against the car's colour especially with its contrasting blue interior. Overall the finish is nice but not perfect with a few sections that may require a little attention. The paint has a few signs of bubbling on the bonnet area, if we were being particularly picky this may be an area to look at for a respray at a later date.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. It was pleasing to see during our visit that both the driver and passenger windows in the front and rear sections operated without concern.

The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The exterior photo section also shows the convertible hood in great condition with no tears or rips.

Interior

60's space-race styling still looks stunning, from it's retro dash area to colour matched super-wide seating, the Galaxie has a huge amount of character.

Seats and Carpets

The teal blue leather seats with cream block stripes and stitching show in a great condition as you would expect to find from cherished and careful ownership. The seats have a unique feature in that they lean to the side when these sections are pulled forward, allowing easier access to the rear section.

There are a few signs of age and patina showed on the seats which is to be expected from a car of this age. We noted a slight tear to the drivers seat edge and a small area where the stitching had come loose from the drivers seat base. Underneath the seats were a few signs of damage to the wooden base section.

Colour matched carpet sections showed with a light amount of wear and compliment the interior beautifully. We cover the cabin area of the Galaxie in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

Clocks and dials showed nicely with ~76,143 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections showed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional. An 8-track radio player and oil, voltage and temperature gauges are all present in the dash area.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel shows in a good condition without major wear and in line with the quality of this car. Chrome support shows well and highlights further the great design features in the Ford. Being an automatic, the drive shift lever operates without issues and shows well also.

Mechanics

The 5.4L FE Series V8 engine developed ~208BHP from factory and with no advisories on the last MOT, this Ford is ready for its next adventures.

Engine and Gearbox

The Galaxie runs a 332 cubic inch FE series engine. The engine sounded excellent on our visit and has benefitted from having the cylinder head re-skimmed and the valves re-worked and reseated in the current ownership.

Additionally an electronic ignition has been fitted and the manifold has been skimmed and shows no signs of blowing which is common on some versions of these engines.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The Galaxie was a really comfortable drive with a leaf springs and shock absorbers at the back and independent double wishbones and shock absorbers at the front.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal and worked as to be expected. Please view the mechanical review video and photographs to see close-up and underside images from around the Galaxie.

The Drive

A really fun and enjoyable drive out in the Galaxie which handled very well considering the size of the car. As you'd expect from any big cruising roadster, the suspension is smooth and easily soaked up any bumps in the road.

The Galaxie is a super sleek car built for cruising. Seriously fun to drive, this is a car that just begs to take a journey out with the windows dropped and the sun shining, taking on the open road ahead.

Electrics and Other

The hydraulic soft top roof function worked without concern in its function opening and closing as to be expected. Both air horns work for a tuneful sound which we feature in our on the road video.

There is an aftermarket bluetooth system installed into the original ashtray section, setup to play music from a smartphone through the original 8-track radio. The finish wasn't to the same high standard as the rest of the car but being hidden out of sight, this didn't raise a real concern. The electrics of the car are reported by Nigel, to be largely all functional except for the blower behind the steering wheel and clock on the dash area of the car.

History and Paperwork

This UK RHD has covered under ~2,000 miles in the last 5 years and just 1 former keeper recorded, it comes to market from ~6.5 year ownership and presents in lovely condition.

Soon after taking ownership, and while fixing a slight exhaust leak between the heads and manifolds, Nigel had the heads skimmed (including the manifold side) and the valves re-seated (including replacing the valve stem seals) while they were off the car. At the same time the water pump, oil pump and the timing chain set were renewed and the power steering pump overhauled. Nigel also had the driver’s door re skinned and repainted and had also completely overhauled the braking system.

when the brakes were overhauled do you fit discs or retain pads?
Secondly the passenger door bottom looks a bit suspect…or is that just the video?

Hi Steve, original drums all round. I wasn’t sure about the door so I just went and checked The underside of the door is a bit scabby and the metal is pitted with a few small holes, I gave it a good squeeze along the bottom edge but still solid.
