Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A rare British coupe with sleek, American-inspired styling, a real standout classic of the 60's era.

The 1963 Ford Consul Capri is a rare and highly coveted classic, with only about ~18,000 units ever produced during its brief production run. This includes both standard and GT variants, making it an even rarer find for collectors. Drawing inspiration from the Ford Thunderbird and Ford Galaxie Sunliner, its sleek design was the brainchild of Sir Horace Denne, Ford's Sales Export Director. With production ending in 1964 after just two and a half years, the Consul Capri quickly became a standout in the automotive world. Known for its distinctive styling and innovative features, it was designed to offer the performance and appeal of a sports car while maintaining practicality.

This example comes to market from ~8 year ownership. It has been well cared for over the years, a body restoration was actioned in 1998 and the car has covered barely ~10,000 miles since. The car also benefits from a rebuilt engine in 2018, and comes to market in beautiful condition ready for a new owner to enjoy.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Whether it's the smooth design body lines or its on the road presence, every drive in the Capri feels really special.

The current owner, Steve, has always been a fan of the '60s culture, especially cars, he said, "I was always a fan of the Capri growing up. I had always admired the model and when this version came up, I wanted to own an exciting bit of history to preserve for the future". Steve has been keen to keep the car as original as he can, he said, "I love that classic vintage style, and for me, it's always been important to keep this as a historic car. It's such a head turner when I take it out on the road. What's not to love about that shape and design!".

The Capri comes to market with Steve telling us, "Being part of the owners club, it's been a tough decision to part ways with this one. But, as time goes on, I'm getting less time to spend on it keeping it up to the standard I want from it. I feel its the right time for someone else to really enjoy it as I have done for the last few years". Steve will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its sleek pillar-less design, graceful curves, striking tail-fins, and chrome details, this classic commands attention.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13" chrome capped wheels show in smart condition. During our visit, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any issue to the finish or centres.

The tyres are finished with whitewall trim, giving a vintage feel to the exterior of the Ford. These do show with a few signs of wear, but nothing overly concerning. The wheels are fitted with Hankook Optima tyres, these also appear to be in good condition, with a great amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

This is a really lovely example, and the shut lines and panel gaps look great. Both doors, bonnet and boot sections open and close well. The bodywork was restored 1998, with any corrosion that was present being removed and attended to as needed, you can see some "work in progress" pictures from the time in the history section.

In terms of the condition of the car today, there were a few small areas of corrosion under the surface in the boot section, rear wheel arches and some areas of age underneath the door edges, but you need to look closely to spot these. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint to the Ford appeared to be in great condition on our visit, with an even colour match across each panel. If you look really closely at some areas like around the badges, you might notice a tiny bit of cracking to the paint, but this is a car that was painted ~28 years ago and in summary, nothing really concerning that we noted.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Consul Capri looks great and is in line with the overall condition of the car. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration to the glass sections. The side windows lined up well with the bodywork finishing off the pilar-less design nicely.

The window seals and surrounds showed without issue and align with the overall condition of the car. Badges and emblems all looked to be in lovely condition. The chrome areas look great with only a few notes of pitting to the finish.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The Capri's interior blends British craftsmanship with American-inspired flair.

Seats and Carpets

The seating provides good support, present in good condition having been re-covered in the distant past. The rear seating section also showed in good condition. We noted no signs of rips or tears to the seats themselves, only a few minor crease marks on the drivers seat.

The carpets look great in the main cabin area, having been replaced in 2018. Equally in the boot, this area showed no concerns. Throughout the car we noted no problems and the flooring underneath the car mats looked great as well. The headlining showed without concern having been replaced in 2018 too. We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The dash appears in great shape with no issues or scratches to report. Top of the dash presents well and without splits or cracking to this section. Mileage counter showed with ~13,498 miles at the time of our visit, the MOT history showing that it's been around the clock.

Smith's branded dials, switch and controls are well presented, all faces look clean and clear and show without fogging, only a few observations of slight surface marking. Speedometer, temperature, oil, voltage and fuel gauge all showed nicely with the vintage style carrying across the drivers section and we found no issues with any warning lights. Please take a look at the gallery images for a closer look at the interior sections.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 2 spoke retro steering wheel is a great highlight of the cabin area. Overall the steering wheel looked great and showed no major issues.

The simplistic gear stick looks great with minimal wear to this area and in line with the well kept nature of the rest of the interior. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The 1.5L inline-four engine in the Ford Consul Capri offers smooth performance, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox for an engaging drive.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed on the local roads. We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. On the drive, we got an overview from Steve's perspective on how the car performs.

The car benefits from a rebuilt engine in 2018. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and for a closer look underneath the Ford, and the engine bay. We go into further detail about the Consul and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, we took the car around some local roads. We heard no knocks, bangs or unwanted noises from the underside, the car handled really nicely and felt solid on the road.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. The Ford's pistons, seals and cylinders were replaced in 2023. Overall, the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

The Drive

The drive was smooth and trouble-free, combining classic charm with effortless cruising. Its lightweight build, responsive steering, and smooth suspension create a relaxed yet engaging ride.

The 1.5L engine provides steady performance, while the column-shift gearbox enhances the nostalgic feel. Out on the town roads, the Capri delivered a refined and enjoyable driving experience.

Electrics and Other

The Capri is equipped with an upgraded Sony bluetooth stereo and a simplistic fan sits in the centre section of the cabin. Speakers are retro fitted on the rear shelf. Overall, the electrics are relatively simple, in keeping with the era of the car.

Steve let us know that he has had no issues with the main electrical elements on the car, although noted the voltage meter wasn't working correctly. To the best of his knowledge, everything else was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~8 years, this car benefits from an older body restoration with minimal miles covered since, and a rebuilt engine in 2018.

Admired for its unique design, this Consul Capri is a really well maintained rare model. Various works have of course been actioned over time, these include; Brake callipers, pistons, and cylinders were replaced in October 2023 with an additional master cylinder replacement in December 2024. Interior headlining was replaced in October 2018 at a cost of £500. Boot rubbers have been replaced in June 2017, head gasket and conversion set was changed in March 2018. The Capri has benefited from a rebuilt engine in 2018 too. For a full overview of the Ford's history, take a look over the paperwork gallery section for more information.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
