Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Standing out for its sleek design and practical motoring features, the Zephyr 4 harks back to classic Ford design.

The Ford Zephyr was manufactured by Ford of Britain for ~22 years and was the largest passenger car in the British Ford range until it was replaced by the Consul and Granada in 1972. This is a Mark III, which was dramatically restyled while sharing some of its mechanical components with the Mark II. Ford UK decided to call its replacement the Zephyr 4, with the "4" indicating that it still used the four-cylinder 1,703cc engine from the Consul 375. A four-speed manual gearbox, now with synchromesh on all gears, was standard, with overdrive or automatic transmission available as options. Front disc brakes were also fitted as standard.

This car is coming to market after ~2 years of ownership, presented in an attractive and period green-over-green colourway. It comes with a decent history file detailing servicing, maintenance, and parts replacements, as well as numerous old MOT certificates, the mileage believed to be ~164,150 having gone around the clock. Based on the invoices and the pictures of the exterior renovation, it is believed to have been actioned in 2014/2015 by the former keeper, and also included the engine being reconditioned too.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking after this lovely car; it drives beautifully and has always been a pleasure to take out on a sunny day.

Mike purchased this car around two years ago from his wife’s cousin in Swindon. The cousin had previously had the car's bodywork fully restored and, due to health issues and lack of use, decided to sell it to Mike. He has thoroughly enjoyed owning this Zephyr and is quite familiar with the model, having driven one daily while working as a taxi driver in the '70s. He loves the car's shape and style, which always turns heads wherever he drives it.

The car recently had a moment of fame, being featured in the latest series of Heartbeat – Season 14, Episode 12, In Sickness and Health – as a getaway car! During Mike’s ownership, he has had a new timing chain and sprockets fitted. The previous owner had installed a stainless steel four-branch manifold along with a Weber carburettor. Mike and his wife have thoroughly enjoyed day trips in the Zephyr and participating in rallies around Bournemouth and Poole. However, due to his wife’s health, Mike finds that he no longer uses the car and has therefore decided to bring it to auction with us. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

A design from a bygone era from Ford, the fins on the rear arches are very period, and this restored example presents well.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13" wheels, finished with chrome hubcaps, look fantastic on and give the car an elevated appeal. During our visit, the wheels appeared to be well cared for, with no obvious signs of damage to any of the hubcaps.

The wheels are fitted with Hifly Super 2000 tyres, dated 2021, which also appear to be in excellent condition. They have a good amount of tread remaining and no obvious visible cracking or signs of ageing on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Zephyr looks in great condition, as to be expected for a restored example, with all the panel gaps around the car appearing to align very well for a car of this age. During our visit, we didn't spot any obvious dings or dents around the bodywork. Looking over the invoices and the documentation, the exterior was renovated in 2014/2015.

We've provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in 'Spruce Green', the paint is applied with even coverage and colour across each panel. The car was completely resprayed before Mike's ownership in its original colour.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Zephyr 4 looks excellent. During our visit, we didn’t notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, in keeping with the overall presentation of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition as well. The chrome and stainless steel brightwork has been carefully preserved over the years and possibly replaced where needed.

Interior

The Zephyr features bench seats providing comfortable and luxurious room for up to six passengers, along with ample space for luggage.

Seats and Carpets

The light green bench seats have held their shape very well over the years. A similar story is told with the door cards and green carpets. For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in green and features a classic rectangle dial. For added peace of mind, Mike has installed three gauges; a volt meter, oil pressure and temperature gauges.

The dashboard of this Zephyr shows signed of age on the top in the form of some rips/cracking to the covering. The odometer showed a reading of ~64,150 miles during our visit, the odometer based on the MOT history looking to have gone around once so ~164,150.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Zephyr branded steering wheel is fitted, which is in great condition with a metal horn rim inset. The black column change gearstick looks good too. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by a 4-cylinder 1,703cc engine shared with the Consul 375, it features a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on all gears.

Engine and Gearbox

On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran well.

Mike reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual four-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Zephyr and the smart engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Poole roads.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a luxurious car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

The perfect car for a relaxed day out, a very smooth journey is offered in the Ford Zephyr 4 Mark III, Mike has loved using the car for road trips and classic car rallies around Poole.

The Zephyr fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Mike, the car felt tight, exhibiting plenty of power to navigate the road. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Mike reports that, to his knowledge, all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car. He has had some extra dials fitted to the lower dash during his ownership, for added peace of mind, as pictured.

History and Paperwork

A lovely example of a period Ford, this Zephyr 4 was restored by the former keeper in 2014/2015, comes to market from ~2 year ownership, and is very much ready for a new owner to enjoy.

The car is coming out of a ~2 year ownership with Mike. Purchased from a family member, they look to have actioned a renovation on the car in 2014/2015 judging by the invoices and the pictures of the car in paint, along with having the engine reconditioned. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports all the way back to 1967, servicing and parts this Zephyr 4 Mark III has received over its life. Although exempt this Zephyr comes with a current MOT valid until 19.03.2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
