Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

A fast Mk1 Ford Cortina; 2 door body with a stripped out interior, sports suspension and most importantly a 2.0L Field Motorsport engine pushing out over 200BHP.

The Mk1 Cortina has a firm place in the heart of most "Fast Ford" fans, most notably because of the Lotus Cortina that Ford commissioned to go racing in during the 60s. As a result, many people saw the 2 door version as an excellent platform to create their own punchier creations than the standard line-up on offer.

This example has had an extensive rebuild and refit by renowned experts in the scene, Field Motorsport. A 2.0L Duratec engine running with twin Webbers and a short shift gearbox with straight cut gearing on all but 4th make this a very hot prospect as a road car.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Henrik the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My mechanic dubbed it the Orange Tango ASBO, I'm pretty sure he liked it as much as me!

Henrik loves his cars, he's had a wide ranging collecting from classics through to modern performance. After sourcing a 2 door Mk 1 Cortina, he got to work with the well respected experts Field Motorsport to create a very unique fast Ford. Field Motorsport are competition engine specialists and often found preparing cars for WRC, so you can be rest assured this car has been finished to a very high spec.

Due to a change in circumstances and the pandemic, Henrik is unable to use the car as much as originally planned and is now bringing it to auction for a like-minded enthusiast to enjoy it. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A 2 door body with a colour to match the sound this Cortina makes.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 14" wheels, they're painted black to match the detailing on this Cortina. They present in good condition, just with a small few marks on the, nothing a bit of touching up couldn't fix.

The Marangoni Verso tyres are in good condition with plenty of life left in them, ready to be used this summer. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed look around the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this car is excellent, the car is an "air-flow" model as you'll see from the vents on the c pillars. It was treated to a respray as part of the rebuild, and having been dry stored since then, we didn't notice any corrosion on the body.

All the panel gaps look tight and true along with the shut lines along with the doors etc. They hang well just as they should and shut with ease, which can be seen in the interior video. If we were being picky, we'd say the boot needs slight adjustment so the offside sits a tad higher for a perfect shut line. Take a look at the exterior videos to really appreciate this recently restored bodywork.

Paint

The car started it's life with paint code "BA A", Ermine white, a colour that you'll see lots of these fast Cortina's in. When it came to building this car though, Henrik chose something that matched the character of the car.

The paint finish is excellent, even in colour and finish across all panels. The black detailing across the body looking sharp. View the video to get a closer look at this special Mk1 Cortina.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great, we didn't notice any cracks, chips or discolouration on our visit. The window seals are showing their age though, looking like they are older items and would benefit from being renewed.

The car has the smaller chrome bumpers fitted adding to that race/fast road look, and the relevant badging across the car looks in great condition.

Interior

A stripped back performance-focused interior, sports seats and an extra race inspired control panel.

Seats and Carpets

This Cortina features a fairly basic cockpit, the main passion for this build is to race and that means all unnecessities stripped for the all-important weight-saving performance benefits.

The car features racing seats, they've seen some use in a previous car but still hold their shape as needed. Black carpets were fitted relatively recently too. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed interior tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard follows the similar performance feel of the rest of the interior with some original dials and gauges, and some newer items fitted.

Auxiliary switches and panels have been fitted which can be seen in the images and videos, to ensure the driver is kept well informed of the status of the car. The condition of the dashboard is good with no major defects or damage to note.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An aftermarket steering wheel and gear knob have been fitted for fast performance in the Cortina, they both offer plenty of grip and are in great condition throughout.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the car.

Mechanics

Arguably the star of the show, the Field Motorsport power-plant and drivetrain.

Engine and Gearbox

The car features a Field Motorsport 2.0L Duratec race engine, fuelled by twin Webers. The engine now allows the car to push out somewhere between 200-220BHP, perfect for a track day or those quick 0-30MPH dashes!

The gearbox was also modified accordingly by Field Motorsport to a short shift with straight cut gears on 1, 2 and 3. It's quite something, the gearbox, the Weber carbs, and a sports exhaust. Watch the video to see the burst in to life from cold while in the garage.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has been fitted with sports suspension. We took the car on a short drive for the photography visit, it's a tight handling experience, miles better than the original set-up this car would have come with. The rear has also been fitted with a limited slip differential.

When Henrik first had the car built, it was fitted with race brakes but these proved to be a little too harsh and noisy for road use, and they were subsequently changed for more road use appropriate items.

The Drive

Henrik reports a great drive in the Cortina. On our brief jaunt with the car, it turned heads and there were a lot of admiring smiles. It's a track inspired performance build so it handles great and inspires confidence.

Electrics and Other

Henrik reports all the electrical systems are reliable and working to his knowledge, the car has been in storage for the past year during the pandemic.

A new ignition system has been fitted, a master key that acts as a kill switch for the battery, with a modern starter button.

History and Paperwork

A very special custom Fast Ford built with performance in mind, it's the perfect track/weekend car for a Ford enthusiast.

You'll see a letter from the Mk1 Cortina Owners club confirming the cars build and spec details. Still retaining its "air flow" detailing, most other elements of the car have been renewed for a performance upgrade. Looking through the bills, the car cost ~£50,000 to put together.

With prices of Lotus Cortina's continuing to rise, this performance focused Mk1 offers a great balance between classic and modern. The 2.0L Duratec engine with modern electrics yet running off of twin Weber carbs. The straight cut gearing and sports suspension paired with the classic 2 door body. There's a lot of value in this vehicle for a Fast Ford fan, with the boot on these things and the rear seats, you could even say it's practical!

Hi Tony, this car does indeed have a reserve. It will sell to the high bidder so long as the final bid is over the reserve price. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics
