Introduction

Kristina Liekate
Professional Consigner

Nothing gets more American classic than a 60s convertible Mustang.

As the original ‘Pony Car’ the Mustang needs little introduction. An immediate success at launch in 1964 the car inspired an American class of automobile that was affordable, compact, highly styled and offered a sporty or performance-oriented image. Already immensely popular by 1968 the Mustang was further immortalised by Steve McQueen in the film ‘Bullitt’. There can be few car enthusiasts out there who don’t have a soft spot for this American icon. Owned and driven by the likes of Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen and Eminem, own a Mustang and you’re in glittering company!

This particular car is an early one from 1965. It was imported in to the UK in 1996, and has been in the current ownership for 21 years. It's an "A Code" car, and in the current ownership it has had significant mechanical work and maintenance to make it a very usable classic car. More recently, it's been kept in professional paid for storage, the lack of miles being the driving force to bring this car to market.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kristina after meeting Jim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved the Mustang, having spent 2 years in Detroit as a kid, these cars left a big impression on me.

Jim purchased this Mustang GT convertible back in 2001, from the original UK keeper who imported and registered the car in 1996. He's really enjoyed this car, lots of trips on sunny summers days, a particularly special memory being using it for his friends wedding and driving them around in the car.

In his ownership, he's had extensive work actioned by specialists RG Auto Specialists in Morpeth. This work was pretty much an overhaul of all the mechanical aspects; engine, transmission, suspension, power steering. More recently, the car has been professionally stored for ~4 years, and it is that lack of use in storage that has led him to sell, "It just seems such a terrible waste of such a great car. Time for someone else to create their own special memories". Jim will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Combining power, elegance and purpose, the Mustang is every inch the American hero.

Wheels and Tyres

This car is fitted with original "GT" styled 14" chrome finished wheels. Elements like the red centre caps are in place, and they present in used condition rather than show condition. In some deeper areas of the wheel design, you'll notice the chrome finish shows wear.

The wheels are fitted with Maxxis tyres, these are dated as older items but presented in usable condition from what we observed, take a look through the photos and videos to see the detail.

Bodywork

In convertible form, these are what the "Pony" car experience is all about. The panels gaps and shut-lines on this example from 1965 look good. In the main this car looks like it has been kept out of the damp conditions, and so we only observed one area of corrosion to the offside rear wheel arch as pictured. Underneath the car there is surface corrosion to some areas, and some redness showing on the bottoms of some panels but in the main the car looks good.

In America this car had a restoration in the late 80s looking at the magazine articles, and won a few shows stateside after that too. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the period Ford colour of "Springtime Yellow", it definitely gives evocation for a bygone era, cruising the American highways. The colour of the paint and finish is even across all the panels from our observation. This is a car that hasn't been painted in some time and so there are swirl marks that come with age as you'd expect.

With it being a car that has been used and not painted in sometime, there are a fair few marks dotted across the bodywork, areas like wheels arches and door edges have the nicks that come with age and use. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to make up your own minds on the condition.

Glass and Trim

All the glad and trim on this car looks in good condition. The window surrounds etc all present in condition in line with the age of the car, and the chrome bumpers look good too.

This car has the electric power roof, you can see it in operation towards the end of the "Exterior Review" video. The condition of the roof is good, Jim did inform us that the rear screen has a tiny split in it.

Interior

A proper Pony interior, high-quality full black leather throughout with chrome accents.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in black leather, the seats in this Mustang look in good condition. There is no major wear visible, just some ageing that you'd expect with time. The black carpets look in similar condition too, and are fitted with black rubber over-mats in the front of the car.

The door cards on this car look in similar condition too. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Dashboard

Fitted with a black dashboard, this car being a "GT" comes with the extra dials in the instrument cluster. Jim reports that they are all working correctly, the chrome surrounds could be improved with refurbishment.

The dash itself has some marks to the fascia etc, just in keeping with age and use as this isn't a car that has come through a recent restoration.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a period wooden Ford Mustang steering wheel, it presents in good condition and steals the show a little, the wood rim and metal spokes providing a contrast to the otherwise all black interior. The automatic gear selector on this car presents in fair condition, just some wear/light pitting to the chrome surround that can come with age.

Mechanics

An A Code small block, in the 80s it was bored out and the transmission rebuilt too to deliver the horsepower effectively.

Engine and Gearbox

This car has seen significant work on the mechanical side in the current ownership, with invoices of all the work photographed for the detail. The engine and transmission have been overhauled to ensure it can continue to run for many years to come. In addition, electronic ignition has been fitted along with a Holly electric choke.

Watch the video to see and hear it start up, and Jim driving and even manually selecting gears on the C-4 box, he's got confidence in this car with the work he's had done and maintenance over the years.

Suspension and Brakes

Along with the overhaul of the engine and transmission in current ownership, the suspension both front and back were refurbished and renewed too. On our drive out the car was performant, a comfortable ride with no untoward bangs/crashes observed.

The Drive

With a bit more hidden pep under the hood of this "A Code" Mustang, the drive really is all about cruising in complete comfort. The work that's been done though means you can put your foot down and really hear that V8 roar when you feel like having a bit more fun, that is what these cars are all about after all.

Electrics and Other

Jim has mentioned that all the dials/gauges are working as they should, this car being a "GT", it comes with more in instrument cluster than a standard car. It's also been fitted with electronic ignition and a Holly electric choke.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~21 year ownership, this A Code Mustang has been in the UK since 1996 and had an extensive restoration stateside in the mid to late 80s.

Included in the history pack are all of the invoices for works completed in the current ownership with Jim. The major work was completed early in his ownership between 2003-2004, where RG Auto Specialists in Morpeth overhauled engine, transmission, power steering, suspension. The history from America comes in the form of some magazine articles, the car having attracted attention there after winning some awards in the early 90s. The car was restored stateside in the mid to late 80s, lots of work actioned to save this car, and the colour is believed to be original on this car, and we'll leave you to judge the condition of the car, but it seems in keeping with restoration and careful ownership since then.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
