Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

With a throaty V8 upfront, rear wheel drive and iconic exhaust notes - the Mustang is one of the most popular classic cars of all time.

It’s hard to imagine a car that made a more spectacular debut than the Mustang did in April 1964. Demand was so high that sales outstripped production by 6,000 vehicles by the end of the first day of sales. Its success was assured as one of the fastest-selling cars of all time. Gorgeous American Muscle styling is credited to Gale Halderman, David Ash, and Joe Oros of the Ford design studio, with the distinctive long bonnet and short boot that set the benchmark for the "Pony Car" concept.

This Ford was manufactured with a "C-Code" powertrain layout, offering a ~200BHP 289 cu in engine with a two-barrel carburettor as the base V8, coupled to Ford's three-speed automatic transmission. The Mustang comes to the market from ~8 years ownership, with just one former keeper registered in the UK, having been imported in 2015. With added power steering and front disc brakes, the car is a truly drivable classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Ali the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The 1966 Mustang has always been my dream car. I love the noise of it and it’s a real head turner.

The current owner Ali is a bit of a petrol head "There's something about the noise and simplicity which I really love on these types of cars. It's real motoring to me and thats what I love most about the Mustang. It sounds fantastic and it's a really enjoyable cruise out on the road in it".

Since having a child with his partner, Ali doesn’t get the chance to drive it as much as he used to "I had ambitions to really modify it, upgrade the wheels and change the colour. But I can’t justify spending on it now that I have children and it seems a shame to have it not being used". If you have any questions about the car, Ali would be pleased to answer them in the comments section below.

Exterior

This Mustang turns just as many heads today as it did back in 1966 - 60's classic styling with a muscle car stance.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" 5-spoke rims complement the muscle car style. We didn't observe any significant signs of damage, although these are finished in chrome and would benefit from a thorough polish and restoration to bring out the original detailing. There were a few small signs of curbing on the wheels.

The wheels are fitted with Dynamo Street-H tires, which also appear to be in great condition and have been recently replaced by the current owner. Both the front and rear tires show no notable signs of wear. The tread specification remains consistent at 215/60 across all four corners. For a more detailed view of the exterior of this Mustang and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The car maintains well-aligned shut lines, and we couldn't spot any visible panel distortions. The Ford gracefully shows its age, and both doors, the bonnet, and the boot open and close smoothly.

During our visit, we didn't come across any significant dents on the car. Nevertheless, the car does need some attention. There were signs of corrosion that have started to appear, particularly around the A-pillars and gutter tracks above the doors, and on the bottom of the nearside door. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the period Ford colour of "Springtime Yellow", it's a classic choice. The colour and finish seem consistent across the entire car, it would benefit from a thorough polish and a good amount of attention to bring it up to a higher standard, as it appeared somewhat flat during our visit.

We did not identify any significant scratches, although we did observe some paint blemishes, there were signs of paint flaking around the headlight sections/seams which is typical for Mustangs of this era, and some areas like the door sills where the paint has chipped. Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the Mustang appeared to be in good condition, including the windscreen, windows, mirrors, and lenses. We didn't observe any cracks, chips, or significant scratching during our visit.

We also noted the condition of the chrome trim to be in good order, with no significant damage or wear present throughout. Much the like the paint, the chrome would benefit from a good level of polish to bring out the shine again on these areas. There area number of spares as pictured that come with the car that include some of the exterior trim.

Interior

A classic Mustang interior, all black to contrast the exterior, along with chrome accents.

Seats and Carpets

The smart seats feature a textured inlay and are in great condition on the most part. We did note, there are signs of wear beginning to show on the passenger seat top edge where the stitching is coming apart slightly. The rear seat section appeared to be in remarkably good condition, with hardly a mark on this area.

The cabin carpets are in respectable condition although are displaying a few signs of ageing. Ideally this area would benefit from a deep clean to bring these back to a higher standard. Additionally the boot section was presented well. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

All original, the black dashboard appears to be in good condition without any major concern noted. The top of the dashboard is showing no signs of splits or cracks, however, the material is starting to lift on the facings. The odometer displayed ~32,799 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are well maintained; all the surfaces appear clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment. Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Mustang's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A beautifully classic Mustang branded steering wheel boasting a lovely wood trim matches well with the rest of the interior. The auto gear selector displayed a few marks related to its age, but with no major damage and maintaining a lovely condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Packing a 4.7L engine, these Pony cars with an automatic gearbox, make for a perfect classic cruiser.

Engine and Gearbox

This example was manufactured with a "C-Code" engine, offering a ~200BHP from 289 cu with a two-barrel carburettor as the base V8.

Carrying out a proper cold start, the car took a little longer than normal to start, but was quickly up and running once the carbs were fuelled. The car drives well, with its smooth Ford Cruise-O-Matic three-speed auto gearbox working through its motions nicely. We took the car on some local roads with the current owner to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the gears in the Mustang and receiving an overview from Ali's perspective on the car's performance.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive, we didn't detect any significant knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, overall the car performed as anticipated without any observed issues.

The Mustang comes equipped with upgraded disc brakes to the front. These felt strong, with no noticeable pulling or vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a stop smoothly, meeting our expectations.

We cover the underside of the Ford in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

Unsurprisingly, the car pulls strongly and drives smoothly. Automatic transmission changes are smooth and the car stops straight and evenly. There has been power steering upgraded additionally to the Ford which aids the journey out.

As to be expected from a car like this, the experience of driving a Mustang is as good as can be imagined, with the big block V8 roaring away in front of you it's hard to imagine having anything but fun in this car.

Electrics and Other

The electronics in the Mustang are straightforward given it's a 60's car but are in good condition. During our visit, we observed that the fuel gauge, water pressure and temp gauge, oil pressure, speedometer, rev counter, and voltage read were all functioning without any issues.

The main additional electronic feature on the Ford was the power steering installed to the car as an upgrade from original. There is also a cassette player and option to plug into a phone using an additional cable. Also supplied with the car is an additional roof lining, spare distributor and other items of trim. Ali let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car so everything should be working correctly.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~8 years of ownership, having been imported in to the UK in 2015, it comes with some useful upgrades and would make a nice car to tinker with over time.

This is a car to be driven, coming in a classic specification. There is limited paperwork with the car due to its history from its American ownership and import status. The Mustang has benefitted from power steering being installed to the car as an upgrade from original. Additional upgrades include a new carburettor, fuel pressure regulator, updated distributor, spare roof headlining and a few spare trim pieces. A welcome addition are the updated discs on the front of the car greatly aiding stopping power.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Should any questions be required, Ali would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
