Introduction

Richard Gormley
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Big V8 upfront, rear wheel drive, those iconic exhaust notes - the pony car is deeply embedded in American culture.

As the original ‘Pony Car’ the Mustang needs little introduction. An immediate success at launch in 1964 the car inspired an American class of automobile that was affordable, compact, highly styled and offered a sporty or performance-oriented image.

Already immensely popular by 1968 the Mustang was further immortalised by Steve McQueen in the film ‘Bullitt’. There can be few car enthusiasts out there who don’t have a soft spot for this American icon. Owned and driven by the likes of Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen and Eminem, own a Mustang and you’re in glittering company!

This car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe, auto, C4 finished in Wimbledon White over Vintage Burgundy. Imported in 2019 it has chrome wheels and the interior is very original. The wonderful V8 heartbeat combines with the smooth, relaxed power from the 4.7 litre engine to complete the Stateside driving experience.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Richard after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I am passionate about classic cars - I love to keep them as original as possible and keep them true to their history.

Richard has owned this car since October 2019 having aquired it from a dealer in Tamworth. He tells us "This car is something of an enigma. Being sold as a 1966 Mustang Coupe, auto, C4 we believe the car could be a GT Tribute or even disguised GT due to styling features only available on that model".

He was contacted by an American film company to feature the car. With the working title "The Lizard Man", if the film gets released in England and America, this vehicle should be featured on the front cover of the DVD and also the new owner would possibly be invited to a ‘red carpet event’. Richard will be more than happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Combining power, elegance and purpose, the Mustang is every inch the American hero.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wheels really complement the metallic burgundy finish. They are sound but would benefit from some refurbishment as can be seen from the photographs. They are wearing Davanti 195/65 R15 tyres which Richard advises were new in 2020 and appear to have good tread remaining. There is a good spare in the boot too.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears straight and even. The car sits exactly as it should giving it the characteristic Mustang stance. The air scoop, fitted at the time of the respray gives the Mustang a muscular, purposeful appearance.

Paint

The car was resprayed in 2020 and looks great. The colour combination is fantastic and the metallic finish has a deep shine. Richard advised that there are some minor flaws in the paint and it's not a concours finish. It looks good though and is ideal for a useable classic.

We have taken many images from a number of different angles to help you assess the condition of the bodywork and paint as if you were viewing the car yourself. Please use these to help ascertain the overall condition.

Glass and Trim

Glass is clear with no obvious flaws or damage. The chrome trim is very good with only some minor pitting in some places which is of course common for a car of this age. Please check the photos to get a full impression of the glass, trim and car's overall condition.

Interior

Classic stateside 60's styling and an amazingly original interior.

Seats and Carpets

The cream seats and red carpets appear original and are in remarkably good condition. There are no obvious holes or tears and, wanting to maintain the originality, Richard has fed the leather and had the carpets cleaned rather than a refit. The headlining is in very good condition and appears relatively new.

The interior trim is a little tired in some areas which is fairly typical for a car of this era, take the time to view the photos carefully at your leisure.

Dashboard

The dashboard also appears original and while in good condition for the car's age it would benefit from some attention. Richard confirms there is a new glove box and the original Mustang radio and speakers are installed but do not work presently.

The speedo wavers slightly, suggesting a worn cable, and the odometer is not working.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood rimmed steering wheel is stunning and the chrome drive selector is a work of art in in itself. These items really add to the already stylish interior, they'll definitely help to make every journey a special occasion in this Pony.

Mechanics

Effortless acceleration, these Mustangs are perfect for cruising with a glorious V8 soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.7L V8 pulls well and sounds fantastic, check out the 'On The Road' video. Richard advises that is his ownership much engine work has been carried out by Scholar Engines, Mendlesham. This includes a refurbished head, new valves and polished ports as well as a new oil and water pump, aluminium radiator, HT leads and plugs. Richard is keen to point out that there is a slight oil leak on the sump gasket.

Suspension and Brakes

We are advised the car has new Wilwood brakes installed which were already present when purchased including front discs, rear drums, calipers and master cylinder. The car does have stainless steel brake pipes which Richard confirms need a little tidying.

The Drive

Unsurprisingly, the car pulls strongly and drives smoothly. Automatic transmission changes are smooth and the car stops straight and evenly. Checkout the On The Road video to view the short drive we joined Richard for.

Electrics and Other

Rear lights and front driving lights work as they should, however, Richard advises that wiring generally could do with some attention. There is currently a battery discharge issue which remains unresolved. The alternator has been checked and is functioning correctly. Please also note that the odometer as mentioned in the interior section is not working, and so remains at ~80,999.

History and Paperwork

The archetypal American classic, the Mustang is often the first classic car that springs to many peoples minds, this imported example is in coupe form looks and sounds the part.

This is a car to be driven. The highly original interior combined with the new paintwork to make this car feel like a real useable classic. Richard has invested much of his soul into this car to create a great basis for further improvement. He has included a very helpful list of those works he's carried out and also those jobs he feels remain outstanding. Also included in the sale is a pressed steel "Mustang" sign that Richard had made to go on the gate. There is limited paperwork with the car but the documents do include some papers from its American ownership.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks; seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi, on the cold start video the engine sounds like it has a distinct small end knock, has this been investigated or is it something else?
Many thanks
