Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A far cry from the original, this Restomod dubbed the Honglia R, completes a transformation to race specification!

The 1967 Ford Anglia was the final model of the iconic 105E series, known for its distinctive backward-slanted rear window. Powered by a 997cc inline-four engine, it produced around 39 horsepower and was a practical, economical car popular with British families for its reliability and low running costs. As Ford prepared to replace it with the Escort in 1968, the Anglia remained beloved by budget-conscious buyers and young drivers. It also gained a following in motorsports, with modified versions competing in rallies and races. Today, the Anglia is a cherished classic in British motoring history.

Purchased as a fully custom-made Ford Anglia with a space frame front end, this 1967 Anglia is a new machine entirely thanks to the Honda S2000 running gear. This unique Anglia comes to market after almost ~3.5 years, and is road tax and MOT exempt, and has covered ~3 miles since the engine has been rebuilt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Dale the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With Ford rallying mainly Escorts in the 80s, the Anglia is an excellent choice without the Escort price tag.

Dale purchased the Anglia in 2021 from a gentleman who had spent a considerable amount of time, and not to mention money, creating this stunning Honda S2000-powered Ford Anglia, now known as the "Hongila R".

The car was originally built to hill climb but has never competed in any event other than standing on display as a show car as it is entirely road-legal for anyone who wants to run it on the road; it would certainly make nipping to the shops a lot more enjoyable! Dale will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Like a Ford Anglia with a few shots of Botox in all the right places!

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 7x15” 12-spoke lightweight alloy wheels. There are a few minor storage marks to the whites, but nothing excessive.

Fitted with Avon Turbospeed GR28, they are in excellent order with plenty of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery for more detailed images.

Bodywork

The Anglia’s bodywork as you can see, is far from original. The front end is a complete fibreglass section of the wings and bonnet combined, which flips like a clamshell design. This fits nicely and is easily opened by removing the six turn-lock clips. This section can be easily removed to enable working on the engine. The rear arches are Mk1 Escort forest arches that have been crafted onto the Anglia's quarter panels for a superb fit. The boot-lid and doors are both lightweight helping with the overall weight.

There is also a frame included to hold the flip front end which is easily removable to work on.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

Paint

Finished in lime green, the paintwork is in excellent condition. There are a couple of minor stone chips, but nothing excessive. Inside the car, the engine bay and underside have been finished in white, making a brighter environment for anyone working on that particular area of the car.

Images are taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The Plexiglass windows are in good condition with just a few light scratches in the sliding windows, as you would typically find. The windscreen is heated and is in excellent condition.

All of the lights are in good order, with no damage to the lenses observed.

Interior

Fully equipped to take to the track, hill climb or street!

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with lightweight Westfield bucket seats, these are in good condition and hold you tightly, just as they should. Strapping you in is a set of Takata harnesses.

Entirely stripped, there are no carpets, just some aluminium plates to stop your feet slipping on the floor. Please note you need to check if the seats and harnesses are eligible for competition use.

Dashboard

The moulded dashboard is in good condition with no cracks. There is a Digi Dash display unit which shows various readings. And on the opposite side are the relevant fuses and relays.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Momo steering wheel is attached to a quick-release boss. It is in good condition, with just some light shining on the rim. The six-speed gearknob is the standard S2000 one, with light signs of use.

Please see the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

A fully rebuilt Honda S2000 engine has been fitted and covered just 3 miles since!

Engine and Gearbox

Dale has rebuilt the S2000 engine, which is still being run in. At the time of our visit, it had covered just 3 miles, so the lucky winner would need to complete the running-in process, which Dale would explain.

During the rebuild, Dale sent the engine to CPL Racing who took care of the sleeving and crank work, whilst Brown's engines carried out the head work. They have used a new 87.5 Darton sleeved block with new Wiseco forged pistons and a polished crank with individual micro-measured main and rod bearings. New stainless steel Brian Crower racing valves have been fitted. The head and block have been decked, and the compression ratio is now 10.16.1

The gearbox has the S2000 six-speed unit fitted, which is coupled via a two-piece prop-shaft to an Atlas double-pinned thick tubed differential casing with a ZF plated LSD and Trans-X splined half shafts with a 4.6:1 CWP. Watch the video to hear and see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension consists of Escort coilovers made by Gaz. These have 300-lb springs and are held in place with camber-adjustable top mounts. The rear has lowered rear mounts and six-link adjustable arms, and an Escort 2.4 quick rack helps you steer through the forest stage.

The front brakes are 305mm vented discs with Brembo callipers and Mintex 1144 pads. Ar the rear Sierra callipers and w245mm drilled discs and Mintex 114 pads bring the car to a stop, with a firm pedal thanks to the braided brake lines. There is also a bias pedal box with a dash adjuster fitted to set up the braking to suit yourself and a hydraulic fly-off handbrake.

The Drive

There’s only one word to describe the Honglia, and that's fun!

We asked Dale what he liked about the Honglia, to which he replied, “It drives like a race car should do. It's raw; you can hear all the mechanical noises, it’s stiff sprung and corners like a go-kart it feels like honour driving something special and the sound of it something else. The rebuilt engine still needs to be run in, and it just wants to go! When it's ready, it’s going to be huge fun".

Electrics and Other

With a completely new wiring loom, all of the toggle switches are working correctly. There is a fully plumbed-in Lifeline fire extinguisher system in the interior and engine bay and you are protected with a full custom roll cage.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3.5 year ownership with a freshly rebuilt Honda S2000 engine, the original builder stopped counting at ~£40,000 and threw everything away!

Unfortunately, the original builder of the car became frustrated with the mounting costs and stopped counting invoices at £40,000 before discarding them. However, he did provide Dale with his handwritten book, which includes all the essential details about the car, from wiring diagrams to suspension setups and fuel systems.

There are some invoices included from Dale that show the engine work, and as we mentioned, this still needs to be run in.

Well… it’s certainly something special! This is the perfect car for anyone who wants something quite unique. A fully road-legal car that could easily be used as a track-day weapon, hill climb car, or rally car. All of the hard work has been done—it just needs someone to finish running it in and then have some fun, which we are sure you will!

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail – this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time – we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
