Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds - just two of the great movies which have sparked greater interest in the American muscle car.

As the original ‘Pony Car’, the Mustang needs little introduction. An immediate success at launch in 1964, the car inspired an American class of automobile that was affordable, compact, highly styled and offered a sporty or performance-oriented image.

Already immensely popular, by 1968 the Mustang was further immortalised by Steve McQueen in the film ‘Bullitt’. There can be few car enthusiasts out there who don’t have a soft spot for this American icon. Owned and driven by the likes of Bill Clinton, Charlie Sheen and Eminem, own a Mustang and you’re in glittering company! It was in 1967 when the threat of the new Chevrolet Camaro prompted Ford into the first major redesign of the Mustang. The result was the stunning and now iconic 67 Fastback.

This splendid 1967 Mustang Fastback was imported from Hawaii in 2012. Sometime before arriving in the UK, it had a full restoration meaning that when it landed it was ready to be enjoyed. Coming out of 4 years ownership, dry stored in a heated garage and mainly used for shows such as Goodwood and other classic events. This example has a fully rebuilt and uprated 302 cubic inch engine fitted as part of the restoration, and what a sound it now makes.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Matthew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It has been a great privilege owning my ’67 Fastback, it has brought back the best memories of my previous Mustang ownership.

This isn't Matthew's first Mustang. He owned 1967 & 1968 Mustangs around 20 years ago, but hankered after another one. While searching over the years, Matthew fell in love with this one's great condition and appearance. He tells us "The 1967/68 is such an iconic car, and the one to have, if you know about Mustangs, every age group knows what it is and looks over in admiration!". We couldn't agree more.

As a car enthusiast, Matthew now feels it is time for a change, although he says he may live to regret his decision to sell. He will be more than happy to answer any question you might have in the 'Ask Questions' section below.

Exterior

One of the most instantly recognisable American muscle cars to come out of the 1960s - the aggressive look was perfect and just what Ford were aiming for.

Wheels and Tyres

The five-spoke American Racing alloy wheels are in good condition, with no obvious marks to point out. They are fitted with a matching set of BF Goodrich tyres which have a good amount of tread remaining. The combination with painted branding on the tyres is just what you expect on a muscle car like this.

Take a look through the photo gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

In "Fastback" form, the Mustang looks sporty even standing still, it's definitely the most popular look. The bodywork is nice and straight on this example with no dings or dents to be seen.

The panel gap for the doors looks to be quite even, but there could be some room for possible adjustment, just to bring the doors in slightly. The same can be said for the boot lid, it fits quite well, but there may be some room for a slight improvement/tinkering. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

Finished in Metallic Grey, the colour suits the car perfectly and it is finished off with two black stripes running the full length of the Fastback, which just adds to the aggressive look of this American muscle car. According to the records, the car started life as a 289 automatic in Burgundy red. During its restoration in Hawaii, it was sprayed to its current colour, a very popular and traditional colour for this vehicle of this year.

The paint finish is good and responds well in the sunshine, as you can see from our detailed images. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior. The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this stunning 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in good condition, with no obvious flaws to mention. The chrome trim is also in very nice condition. There is a small dent in the boot trim on the nearside corner, but this should be a piece of trim relatively easy to obtain from a Mustang specialist if you desired.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the full exterior.

Interior

Beautiful retrimmed interior, it takes you straight back to 1967 - Sit back, relax, arm out of the window and enjoy!

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Mustang have been retrimmed to what looks to be the original spec of the Fastback. These are in excellent condition with no signs of wear to the usual points such as the bolsters. The rear seat is in the same condition and can be lowered down flat for a larger load area should you wish.

The carpets have also been replaced during the restoration and these are again in excellent condition. There are a set of mats with the Mustang Pony fitted to protect them, and these are also in good order too. Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks to be the original and shows no signs of any cracking or damage. The fascia is also as you would expect, with the instruments sitting in place with chrome bezels that look to be in good order. The instruments are reported to be working as they should with the odometer reading ~12,855.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a wood rim, three-spoke wheel, with a Mustang centre badge, and this is in good condition and shows no real signs of any wear. The chrome T bar gear lever is in good condition with buttons fitted to either side to select gears.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 4.9 litre V8, or 302 if you're American, the engine which has been rebuilt over in Hawaii, starts on the button every time.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.9 litre V8 starts up with ease and comes to a smooth idle with the distinct V8 rumble. It sounds fantastic, and that's even before driving it! The engine has been rebuilt and uprated to the more powerful 302 cubic inch whilst in Hawaii, and Matthew reports that since getting the car 5 years ago he has had no issues whatsoever with the running of the Mustang.

Keeping things cool is an aluminium radiator that has a 16” electric fan fitted, controlled by a Davies Craig controller. Bringing in the air to the huge V8 is the Cobra air filter housing, which is in excellent condition. What goes in must come out, and the exhaust gasses exit via twin Patriot ceramic coated four branch headers, coupled to the stainless exhaust system which was fitted in 2017.

As seen in our "On The Road" video, the Fastback moves through the gears easily and pulls well when the loud pedal is pressed.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mustang sits just right and looks fantastic. This is helped with the new leaf springs and Koni shock absorbers which were fitted in 2018. The steering has been given a makeover in 2017 with the fitment of power steering, which makes a huge difference when driving the car around town. New front wheel bearings and a tie rod bush kit were also fitted at the same time.

Bringing the Mustang to a halt, the brakes are reported to be working as they should with no juddering coming through the pedal.

The Drive

Hearing it before you see it, this American muscle car is one that turns heads wherever it goes. As mentioned, the power steering transforms the car into something which is usable and something you are not afraid to drive around town because it’s heavy.

The Koni dampers provide a firm yet comfortable ride without being too crashy on uneven roads. There is enough power to keep you entertained, and it sounds amazing when you do get a little over-enthusiastic with the throttle.

Matthew says that driving this car always puts a smile on his face, what is more the Mustang is extremely reliable and relatively fast, even by today’s standards. "The sound from the V8 engine is amazing! If you take this out be prepared for the attention, crowds, and photo opportunities as it attracts constant attention".

Electrics and Other

It is 1967, so in terms of mod cons, these are quite limited, but what is there is working as it should. The upgraded cooling system using the Davies Craig controller is a welcomed addition to cool the 4.9 litre V8.

History and Paperwork

Restored in Hawaii and in the UK since 2012 - this 1967 Mustang Fastback has been well cared for by its keepers.

There is a nice history file with the Mustang, with some photographs taken during the restoration. Also present are several invoices for parts purchased from the States and here in the UK, where it has also had some nice upgrades, as mentioned, to the steering, coolant and exhaust system. There are some previous MOT certificates present which show the vehicle has had minimal use, covering approximately ~1,000 miles a year. The car has just had a fresh MOT actioned for peace of mind, good for another year.

After four years of ownership, Matthew has decided to part with the Mustang. It has been an enormous pleasure to own and drive, and other than servicing it’s also been a reliable car to own.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
