Recent Buyer Review – Eamonn McParland on 11th May “From my first general enquiry through to the purchase of my very own MGA, Adam and the team at Trade Classics were quite simply, awesome. I fully recommend Trade Classics without hesitation nor reservation to everyone who is seeking a classic car. A brilliant business model, supported by a really neat and usable website though ultimately managed by a great group of professional, sincere and trustworthy people”. With only 2,048 Shelby GT500’s produced from this era, this Mustang is a rare beast. It underwent a full body restoration to the factory colour of Lime Gold (Ford 2041-A). The GT500 was based on the 1967 Mustang, but as with the other Shelby derivatives, featured some very significant changes.
Starting with the mechanical side, the GT500 featured a 7.0L V8 engine, known as the 428 Cobra Jet. Holley carburettors provide the fuel and air, and the resulting output from the engine is 335 bhp, with 420 lb ft of torque.
As you can see from the images and videos, there were a number of exterior styling differences too; fibre-glass front end, hood, boot lid, rear light panel, quarter panel extension, and last but not least those evocative side-scoops.
Lewis is a classic car guy through and through. He’s lucky enough to have owned a number of classics over the years, including a Jaguar E-Type amongst others.
Lewis bought the car after it had been through an extensive 2 and a half year restoration. Since then he has covered around 1,000 miles in the car. He loves the “beautiful bodywork”, and having used the car says it’s really easy to drive.
Originally he purchased the car for his son, who has since relocated to New Zealand. As a result, as much as Lewis loves the looks, the car is somewhat surplus to requirements for him and so the car will go to a new home.
Finished in the factory original colour of Lime Gold, of which there were 453 built according to the Matri report. As mentioned earlier, the car has had a 2 and a half year restoration completed on it, and the result is a stunning exterior finish.
Wheels & Tyres
The Shelby 15″ wheels are wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tyres all around. They present in great condition with the Lewis looking after the car carefully in his ownership.
Bodywork
Fully restored, you’ll see some of the work in progress pictures below where bodywork needed to be remedied. The bodywork is excellent, take a look at the extensive video review to see for yourself.
Paint
The car was stripped back, and then professionally painted in the Ford Lime Gold colour that it shipped from the factory with. As you would expect, the paint was even across the car when we inspected it, and had a great finish, take a look at the images.
Glass and Trim
The glass and trim across the car is just as you would expect for a full restored car. Nothing was observed during our inspection, other than the great condition.
The interior of the car presents in excellent condition throughout. Watch the video to see the great condition.
Seats and Carpets
Finished in a tan colour across the entirety of the cabin, the seats and carpets all look in great condition. The video review of the interior is extensive so take a look for the detail.
Dashboard
The dashboard is trimmed with a wood veneer and all the dials and fixings look in great condition, really setting off the interior.
Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both the steering wheel and gear stick on this car have been changed on this car. The originals will be supplied with the car, and we will include some images of them in the listing.
Along with the body restoration, this cars engine has been fully built and is a matching numbers example. A little bit of a damp day in Wolverhampton for our drive out in the car, Lewis made an exception and took the car out so that we can show it on the road.
Engine and Gearbox
The car started from cold first time, as observed in the video. There was some vapour from the exhaust as you would expect with the car being cold, but no signs of smoke in our observations. The car has been upgraded to a 5-speed manual gearbox, having originally been fitted with a 4-speed from factory.
Suspension and Brakes
You can see in the exterior review video, and some of the work in progress images, that the car has had a complete overhaul. The result was a great drive and no issues to note on our drive out.
The Drive
A lovely drive, the sound of the V8 booming as we went along some local A-roads to test the car. Watch the video to see the car going through its gears.
Electrics and Other
All working as you would expect on the car. The car has been fitted with a new stereo system that has been hidden in to the centre arm rest.
This car has been in the UK for over 20 years, and underwent a restoration over a period of 2 and a half years recently. There is a Marti report importantly, that shows the Shelby build spec and matching numbers. The car has paperwork detailing some of the restoration work, and MOTs whilst it has been in this country.
The car is showing just over 9,000 as of 13.03.2019.

The Mustang is an iconic car in it’s own right, one of the original great “American Muscle” cars. If you are looking for one, there is arguably no better model to get than a Shelby.
The power of the Shelby big-block, and the aggressive styling details that were carried out on this model took that muscle car reputation even further, to give the GT500 a real presence on the road.
This Marti report verified Shelby GT500 has been restored and is ready to run for a new owner. If you are interested, then get in touch to discuss further details and a potential viewing.
