Introduction
Glyn Parry
"More For Your Money" was one of the slogans used by Fords advertising team when the all new Mk2 Cortina was launched.
With "More Looks…. More Room…. More Go…. More Car for your money", it was a sure fire winner right from the off. Launched in September 1962, the team at Ford had worked hard and fast to bring us the Cortina within the 20 month deadline they had set themselves. In the first year alone, more than 300,000 units were sold, thus proving that Ford had got the Cortina just right.
With other manufacturers aware of the model's success, they started to build their own models to compete with Ford. This is when the Cortina received a major facelift in 1964, which pushed the popularity of the car even further, and by the Autumn of 1966, more than 1 million units had been sold, making the Cortina Britain's most successful car ever built.
This particular example is coming out from 15 years ownership having covered only 9,000 miles in that time. This lovely 1600E comes with a history file dating back to the early 90s when it was restored. Well cared for since then, it presents in very good condition considering a restoration from 30 years ago.

I WANT ONEAsk Questions
Hi Hamish, car looks great & well cared for.
Am I right to assume she’s running on unleaded (V Power?) and would you expect her to make it South London if driven with respect of course!
Finally what are your payment terms? Cash, transfer, bit of both?
Kind regards
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your interest and kind comments.
Yes she runs unleaded and I would expect it to get to South London if driven considerately.
I think that Trade Classics liaise re payment but if it’s my choice I would opt for bank transfer.
Good luck if you decide to bid.
Hi Hamish. Live in nearby Dudley and yoy are about 15 mins from me. Anyway interested in car but before I bid is it possible to take a quick look at car? I appreciate auction ends on Tuesday around 6pm
Hi there.Sorry only just picked up your question.
Unfortunately I’m going to be out much of the day so don’t think we’ll be able to fix a meet.
I have to say that the photos and videos do give a fair and accurate portrayal of the car.
Good luck if you decide to bid.
Hi, I’m interested in your car but not happy placing a bid online, do you have it advertised elsewhere and if so how much for ? Thanks Danny
Hi Danny and thanks for the interest.
The terms of my agreement with TradeClassics mean that the car cannot be advertised elsewhere.
I have to say that they are a highly professional team so if I was going to bid on their site I’d have no qualms.
Good luck if you decide to bid.
Regards
Hamish
Hello Hamish, does your 1600e have tramp bars? Its unclear in the photos.
Thanks for the interest Paul. As far as I know the car has the standard Lotus Cortina rear suspension so if that included tramp bars then…..
I fitted a pair to a 105 Anglia I had many years ago which did make a difference but if you floor this 1600e it takes it happily. Sorry I can’t be more precise.
Regards
Hamish
Does the sunroof work without any leaks.
Absolutely works fine without any leaks. Thanks for the interest.
Hi Hamish
I hope this message finds you well.
I’ve owned 3 of these previously, one light Orchid, one red, one gold and one Mk2 Cortina GT which was more or less the same, but not the same if you know what I mean.
You’ve kept the car in fantastic condition overall.
Hamish, I noticed on the windscreen that there are two spaces in the rubber at either corner, should these have decorative plastic chrome filler pieces in as they don’t look quite right somehow.
You didn’t have any issues with rainwater leaks from this or the Webasto sunroof did you?
I’ve placed a bid on it anyway as apart from those and a rusty tool well in the boot which is normal for these btw, it looks great and you should be very proud that you have cherished it and kept it so well and I’m sure you’ll miss the old girl when she’s gone.
Best regards
Steve
Hi Steve thanks for your interest and kind comments. I truly don’t know if the rubber splits should have metal trims in them but I can guarantee that I’ve ever had a leak from them or indeed from the sunroof. As an aside the guy who sold me the car said it was rumoured that the screen came from one of the cars that were given to the 1970 England World Cup team but that’s not confirmed.
Thanks for the bid. Good luck!
Kind regards
Hamish
Hello Hamish. I used to own this car back in the 80s & did the resto on it. I sold it back some time in 2007/8 I think when I lived in Crawley West Sussex. God I’d love go get it back. Still looking lovely. Richard.
Hi Richard thanks for giving a little more history of this wonderful car. Not trying to be smart but but I bought it from someone in Redhill in 20006.
Nonetheless over the fifteen years I’ve had it I can see the high standard of work of your resto.
I’ve had to add to that of course and it’s still a great example.
Understand your angst because when it’s gone I shall feel the same.
Best wishes
Hamish
Yes thinking about it must of been around that time when I sold it . I’m sure he was from Redhill. Have a look on the log book for the last keeper. I’ve still got loads of pictures of the resto. The car used to be gold before I painted it.
Sorry was also wanted to ask can I come look at the car I’m thinking of placing a bid on it. Are you far from Crawley ? And if poss when is a good time to see it. Thank you. Rich.
Hi Rich,
Checked again and I bought it from a guy in Redhill.
You can view it if you like but I’m in Oldbury which is close to Birmingham. Bit of a journey.
I have to say that the photos and videos give a fair and accurate portrayal of the car as it is today.
Regards
Hamish
Hi Hamish,
do you know where the car was originally registered in the UK.
Was it from the Merseyside area do you know ?
Regards
Hello Geoff,
Thanks for the interest but I’m afraid I have no answers to your questions. The history I have seems to show that the car has spent most of it’s life in the south. If you decide to bid I wish you well.
Apologies
Hamish
