Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

This Ford Escort Mexico is presented in pristine condition after Darren the owner of 14 years, commissioned a full nut and bolt restoration around 8 years ago, and cherished ever since.

Built upon the success in the 1970 London-Mexico rally, it used the same body shell as the Escort RS models but was powered by a much larger engine. This is probably one of the best driving experiences you will get from a car that is so responsive and wonderfully threadable through twisty roads.

With an improved 1700cc crossflow engine and many other mechanical changes, this car derives a sense of nostalgia and fondness, combined with great fun.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Darren the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Everything that needed doing to the car has been done, allowing the new owner to only enjoy that classic sporty drive.

Darren has owned the car for 14 years, using the car as a run-around in a slightly worn state initially. He wanted to get a few things done... one thing led to another and the work turned in to a full nut and bolt restoration!

In the ‘Meet the Owner’ and ‘On the Road’ video, he states all of the mechanical and cosmetic changes that were made during the project. From upgrading the engine to a crossflow 1700cc, Quaife differential, floor pans, stainless steel exhaust and full respray to name a few, the car is now looking fabulous from top to bottom, ready to provide so many more driving memories with the new owner.

Since the restoration, the Escort Mexico has featured at a car show, an article in Classic Ford Magazine, and also got some screen time in the Escort Mexico special of Channel 4’s: For the Love of Cars.

Exterior

Darren’s friend Paul, performed a full respray on the car from inside and out in the gorgeous Daytona Yellow.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on a full set of Yokohama tyres, with Darren replacing the rear two very recently.

The 4-spoke RS wheels are presented in excellent condition, as can be seen in the photos and ‘Exterior Review’ video. Darren has set the car up with a sporty suspension.

Darren also has a set of steel wheels that have only done 100 miles (picture of one in the gallery), these can go with the car for an additional £500 if the buyer is interested.

Bodywork

The panels, apart from the front, are believed to be original and in excellent condition. You can see in the history media file some of the restoration photos that include the car prior to the bare metal respray.

Stripped to the metal, the car had any rust cut out, providing the new owner with a comforting sense of satisfaction.

Paint

The Daytona Yellow finish with black detailing was performed by Darren’s friend, Paul in Wales, who has done an expertly executed job on the car. The paint looks even and dazzling throughout.

Take a look through all the photos and the video review of the exterior to see the complete picture.

Glass and Trim

All in excellent condition on the car after restoration.

Interior

Overall, the interior is in a pristine condition. Credit goes to Darren for all of the hard work and money injected into the project.

Seats and Carpets

Darren mentions he has replaced the seats, adding the correct contour bucket style.

Like with all other parts added from an expert restoration, the seats and carpets are in immaculate condition. New floor pans were added to diminish any possible signs of rust.

Dashboard

All dials and buttons look to be original.

The dashboard encompasses 6 dials that are in working order. The cabin air unit may need to be reviewed by the new owner as one of the handles seems loose.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3-spoke racing wheel maintains great padding and stitching.

The original Escort gear stick is presented in a worn condition that adds a nice touch to the overall interior.

Mechanics

The mechanical restoration results in an intoxicating sound, and it looks incredibly clean too. Darren talks us through everything that's been changed or restored.

Engine and Gearbox

Darren mentions the car has an upgraded Kent 1700cc crossflow in-line four-cylinder engine. The WPE cover looks great too. It also has a 254 Hotrod camshaft lightened and balanced. Darren has the original Mexico sump pan that will be included with the car at sale.

The manual gearbox changes gear very smoothly, with no clutch slippage, as can be seen in Darren's 'On the Road' video.

Suspension and Brakes

On the rear, the car has a Quaife differential, and Darren has set the car up from a suspension perspective to his liking, we think it looks great.

The more reliable and responsive Ford Capri brake discs and callipers have been installed on the Escort Mexico to ensure stopping is just as quick as going!

The Drive

The gearshift is quick, the steering is incredibly responsive and the rear-drive chassis has a sensationally threadable feel along twisty roads.

All mechanical upgrades the car received through restoration only add to the great driving experience this car has.

Electrics and Other

Darren mentions he has recently changed the battery of the car, which sits in the back as the early Escorts should.

He mentions that all dials and electrics work on the car, however, the cabin air unit may need to be repaired.

History and Paperwork

As this was a personal restoration Darren does not have a full invoice history of the works carried out by himself, but we are assured by the professional condition of all work commissioned.

Like with many fast Fords of this era, the number of former keepers is on the high side and amounts to 22. But none of them come close to Darren, whose care and dedication restoring the car to a pristine condition in the most minute details has created a car to be reckoned with.

Please watch the 'Meet the Owner' and 'On the Road' videos as Darren's wealth of information on the restoration will provide a comforting impression on any potential buyer.

Remember, bids in the last minute auto-extend the bidding by 2 minutes, to prevent “auction sniping” at the last second.

Good luck if you’re involved in the bidding!
