Introduction

Gyln Parry
Professional Consigner

With its rallying pedigree, and rarity in the modern market, the Mk1 Escort RS2000 is a sought after car.

The RS2000 comes with a 2.0L four-pot producing ~100BHP, powering the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. It was a homologation special to allow Ford to take the Escort Rallying, where it won several rally events in the 70s. The RS2000 was built in a special department at Ford; AVO or Advanced Vehicle Operations where the "Fast Fords" were all built for a few years. As one of the early ones, the RS2000 gave a desirability for an affordable performance car, which arguably helped lead to hot hatches of today.

This specific car has been restored over a long period of time between the late 80s and up to 2010. It's a car that is well known in the "Fast Ford" scene, with previous owners having membership in both the AVO and RS2000 owners club. It comes to market from short term ownership, and presents in good condition, clear evidence of mechanical work in previous ownership and a solid car that could be used or improved over time.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Darren the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved the looks of the Mk1 Escort, I bought this as a longer term investment, one my kids could enjoy in the future too.

Darren bought the RS2000 to keep as an investment especially with it being an AVO car, however due to a change in his working circumstances he has decided to put it to auction with us. He's had the car for ~4 months, and hasn't covered many miles in it over that time.

Prior to his ownership, the history file mentions a former owner carried out a restoration on the car over a long period of time. Darren will be on hand to answer any queries on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The iconic shape of the Mk1 Escort, especially in rally spec, draws attention anywhere it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

The period Ford RS 2 spoke wheels all looked in good condition, due to a recent refurb. New tyres were fitted all round too, a matching set of Yokohamas. All looked to have plenty of tread left on them.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

Looking through the history file, the car is believed to be still on its original shell. When we documented the exterior, we didn't spot any signs of corrosion across the panels etc, it looks like a solid example. Taking a look at the panel gaps and shut lines, this isn't a concours example and there is definitely room for improvement. Some of the welding work etc when looking underneath is not the tidiest, but then the car was restored with classic rallying in mind.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint from a distance looked in decent condition, however getting closer we did notice some runs on the paint near the bottom of the car, inside the doors and under the bonnet. Not a particularly major issue especially if you intend taking the RS2000 on a rally stage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked to be in good condition, we didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass.

The chrome trim looked in good condition too, we didn't notice any marks on the trim or mirror backs. The headlight covers and sport lights also looked in good condition. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

The original RS steering wheel and seats, it's a familiar place with a rallying twist.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with original RS seats, they were showing signs of their age with some repairs being visibly patched. The piping on the edge of the seat was also looking frayed in places. Keeping with the rally theme, a set of 4-point, Sabelt harnesses are found inside.

The carpets looked in ok condition, showing slight signs of age. We noticed a rounded cutout in the carpet in front of the gearstick, you can see it in the pictures below. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

A simple yet effective dashboard houses all the information the driver needs. The dials looked in good condition, we did notice a couple of slight scratches on the dials but nothing major. Looking over the switches on the centre console, these look to be original items and did show signs of age.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic three-pronged steering wheel with RS logo in the centre looked in good condition, showing light signs of use.

The gearstick, including gator, looked in good condition, with only very slight signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The mechanics is where this RS2000 really shines, the engine and suspension look in great condition.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0L Pinto engine fired up at first attempt with no issues, giving a nice raspy tone whilst on the road with Darren. It's clear to see from the engine bay that the mechanics on this car were a big focus as part of the long term restoration, very clean and tidy in appearance.

The manual gearbox had a sharp, short throw to it, with no unwanted noises noticed on our short drive. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

Looking underneath the RS2000 the suspension looks in great condition, a lot of time looks to have been spent on it, and it felt solid on the road, Darren told us you just point it where you want it to go and it goes. We didn't notice any knocks or bangs coming from the suspension on our short drive.

We didn't get a chance to test the brakes to their limits but they felt good for a car of its age, there wasn't any pulling on the steering under braking. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

The RS2000 performed well on the short drive with Darren, we didn't notice any unwanted noises from the engine, gearbox, suspension or brakes.

It felt sporty, with the raspy exhaust and firm suspension. To see the RS2000 in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

Inside the RS2000 is quite a simple car so didn't have too many switches, there was a couple of extra ones for the spotlights, which Darren told us worked, the dials all worked too.

History and Paperwork

An original AVO RS2000, this car has had an older restoration actioned from the late 1980s to 2010, a great usable example that has room for improvement over time.

This particular car is well known in the AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations) owners club as it was used to rally from the 1980s to 2010 by a previous owner. It is believed to be a matching numbers example looking through the paperwork, and it's clear to see from the mechanics side that a lot of care and attention has gone in to the car. The history folder comes with some MOTs and various other invoices for other work carried out.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
