Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Handling town and country roads alike with ease, the MKII RS2000 is a lovely example of a flashback to simpler and fun driving times with a good dose of power to back it up

Unlike the first Escort, developed by Ford of Britain, the second generation Ford Escort was developed jointly between the UK and Ford of Germany with its first run appearing in January 1975. It used the same mechanical components, floorpan and core structure as the Mark I but the squarer styled Mark II version used a revised underbody, which had been introduced as a running change during the last six months production of the Mark I.

The RS2000 model came onto the market featuring a 2.0L Pinto (OHC) engine. Having clocked up several rally and racing victories, the RS2000 pre-empted the hot hatch market as a desirable but affordable performance road car.

This Ford Escort MKII RS2000 features an after market Ford 'X' Pack extended wheel arches kit and was fully restored and improved in 2003. The car is equipped with the 2.0L Pinto OHC engine on twin 45 DCOE Weber carburettors, running a 5 speed manual gearbox, Minilite style wide wheels as well as an upgraded suspension system.

Showing ~58,857 on the clock, this RS2000 presents in a great condition with its glorious coast of Signal Yellow and having also had the benefit of handling and strut system upgrades by the current owner in 2015. As the car is now over 40 years old the new owner will also benefit from not having road tax or MOT to update considering the Escort's heritage.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Kelvin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Owning an RS2000 has always been a dream for the current owner and when the opportunity came up, it was quickly snapped up.

Having always wanted to purchase an RS2000, the opportunity to buy one came up in 2015 when Kelvin and his son found this car for sale. Kelvin said, "I purchased this car because I had always wanted to own an RS2000 but was never in a position to afford one. I loved this one and made an offer on it".

With its standout colour and the 'X' Pack upgrade, Kelvin decided it was his time to have one to drive for himself. The MKII Escort remains largely untouched across the engine and bodywork since Its purchase with the only major upgrade the addition of the rally stage struts on the front. Modifications made from the factory specifications are the 'X' pack, colour and wheels. All of which had been updated before the 2015 purchase date.

A great looking and exciting car to drive, the RS2000 attracts a lot of attention and turns heads wherever it goes. Kelvin goes on to say, "I have really enjoyed owning this car but as my wife and I go off in our camper more now, I am not able to use it as often as I would like. I feel it needs to be used by someone who will really enjoy it".

Exterior

A real standout on the roads, the Ford Escort RS2000 carries its rallying heritage beautifully with its extended wheel arches bringing a retro look and feel to the MKII.

Wheels and Tyres

The RS2000 carries a lovely set of 8 spoke Minilite 15" alloy wheels with a great set of Fulda Carat Extremo tyres. The setup is 225/50 to the front and 275/50 on the read tyres. Overall the wheels and tyres looked great with no noticeable signs of curbing when we visited the car.

Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Ford.

Bodywork

One of the first things about the bodywork that strikes you when looking over the car is the 'droop snoot' nose, a real classic feature on this Escort. All of the panels look to line up nicely with no major gaps or issues with the shut lines.

There were also no major marks or issues on the bodywork itself although we did note a very slight sign of cracking around the base of the extended wheel arches. There was also a very minor ding above the exhaust when looking over the rear of the car but given the age of the car, there was nothing to concerning that we noted.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Signal Yellow the Ford is a real eye catching car, the paint coat shows well with a good layer over the panels - we would say it's of a good usable standard but of course not one for concours events.

We noted no major chips, marks or scratches around the car when taking a look around the exterior.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage and ownership and we didn't notice any major chips or cracks on our visit. If we were being particularly picky, some sections of the windscreen are starting to delaminate a little but given the age of the car was nothing out of the ordinary.

The windows are etched with the registration number.

The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car, we noted a slight section of cracking above the passenger side front window but nothing too concerning. The vinyl roof showed in a great way and presented no concerns to us looking over the exterior.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking car the Ford really is.

Interior

A real blast from the past, the MKII showed a big set of interior upgrades from its predecessor with greater glass area, more space inside and better seating.

Seats and Carpets

Comfortable Fishnet head mounted seats are fitted in the front of the Escort and are in very good condition. Although not confirmed at the time of our visit it would be likely that these have been re-trimmed at some stage in the Escort's life, as there was very little wear or sagging on the bolster sections. We noted very few issues with the seating area and presented in great condition.

The carpet sections also showed in a great way without major wear and kept the retro look and feel alive all the way through the cabin area. The fabric infill on the door cards looked great also showing without concern.

Dashboard

The dashboard presented well with no visible cracking or warping when we visited the RS2000 and showed ~58,857 on the clock when starting the car up. We noted the driver dials took a little while to react when we started the car up, but after a few seconds, the needles swung into life and worked without concern for the rest of the journey.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the RS2000 dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke RS branded steering wheel and gear selector are presented in great condition and show very few signs of use given the limited mileage on the car which reflected well in the drivers setup.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The RS2000 boasted ~110bhp from its 2.0L OHC Pinto engine, good for 0-60mph in ~8.9 secs and a ~110mph top speed from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

Due to limited usage of the Ford, the engine didn't start straight away on our visit, but this is likely due to the car not being used very much over the past few months. The current owner has let us know that the existing battery will be changed over for the new owner when the sale is finalised.

The RS2000 uses a 2.0L in-line four Pinto OHC (overhead cam) engine with the gearbox being bolted to the rear of the engine, the power generated here is then fed to the diff by a prop shaft through to the rear wheels. Once started up, the engine sounded great and gave a lovely sound when out on the road.

Head over to the 'Mechanical Review' video for an overview of the engine, here you can see the car start up from cold and taken out on a short drive with the owner.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the Ford has had several upgrades applied to it over its more recent years with the current owner spending just under ~£2,000 on new struts, head bolts, bushings, mounting kits and new springs in 2015 aiding the overall ride and handling.

The ride was firm but supportive and we heard no knocks, bangs or any unwanted sounds from the suspension or brakes on the journey out in the car.

The Drive

The RS2000 sounded great firing up and was a real joy to drive out on the roads. The suspension was a little firm but was comfortable on our journey and gave great handling to the car.

The car worked its way through the gears nicely with the clutch working well.

We noted no shaking or juddering on the steering and showed no pull to the side when braking.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the car worked without major concern, as mentioned, we did note that the driver dials took a little while to react when we started the car up.

An aftermarket stereo and radio system has been installed along with front and rear speakers to bring a more modern touch to the interior. A nice touch was that the clock in the dash area was also working which is often a rare sight in classic cars!

History and Paperwork

With a full restoration given to the RS2000 in 2003, the Escort looks as good now as it did from its original purchase with its body and mechanical showing in stunning condition.

The RS2000 has benefitted from a full restoration over its history and travelled few miles given the overall age of the car. In 2015 the current owner upgraded the suspension spending over £800 on struts, head bolts, bushings and mounting kits.

In October of 2015 new springs were also upgraded in the suspension aiding the overall ride and handling at a cost of over £1,100. With just ~58,857 on the clock at the time of our visit the Escort looks in stunning condition and has benefitted from its full restoration project in 2003.
