Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The MK V Cortina remains a beloved classic car, cherished by enthusiasts for its blend of performance and comfort.

Ford hit on a winning formula with the Cortina. Originally developed to compete in the medium car sector, primarily against BMC, the Cortina quickly established itself as a huge hit with the public. Firmly positioned as a best seller and benefiting from huge brand and model loyalty, the Cortina ultimately went through five iterations, culminating in the Mark V, which brought production to a close in 1982. With nearly 3 million cars sold over a 20-year production run, the Cortina's place in the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide was guaranteed.

This MK V Cortina Ghia is being auctioned after ~41 years of ownership. It was in storage from 1987 until 2021, during which time it received extensive body and mechanical refurbishment, keeping the Cortina as original as possible.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Terence the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As the third owner, I bought the car in 1983 and used it for four years before putting it into storage.

Terence probably didn’t expect to keep the Cortina in storage for 34 of his 41-year ownership, but as life gets busy and time ticks on, this is what happened. That was until 2021, when it was taken out of storage and given an extensive restoration to bring back the classic Ford to its former glory, as it was when it was locked away in 1987.

Please feel free to ask Terence any questions in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

With a green and brown colour combination - the 1980 Cortina is just about as '80s as you can get.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 13” Ghia wheels are finished in silver, and the faces have been machined for a superb diamond-cut finish. They are in excellent condition and have been shod with a matching set of Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 tyres.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

As you can see from some of the photographs in the paperwork section, the body was completely stripped, and any necessary areas addressed.

The panel fit and gaps all appear to match, and no dings or dents were noted when looking around the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the original Highland Green finish, the Cortina's paintwork is in excellent condition, having only been applied three years ago.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good order with no noticeable scratches to point out, Terry did tell us there is a small crack at the top nearside of the windscreen which is covered by a sticker.

The front and rear lights are in good condition, with no splits or cracks in the lenses.

A brown vinyl roof fits well, with no damage, and the sunroof operates as it should.

Interior

A very '80s brown velour interior is a timeless classic look for the Cortina Ghia - does it get any more retro than this.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the Cortina is in original condition. Being the Ghia, the seats are covered in velour for a more luxurious feel. The material is slightly stretched but generally in good order.

The matching brown carpets are in good condition, with just a small amount of wear to the driver's heel pad. All of the door cards are in good order, and the wooden cappings also present well.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Being stored away from the sunlight has preserved the dashboard, keeping it free from splits or cracks. The instruments are working correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of ~36,612 miles at the time of our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original four-spoke steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear. In keeping with the vehicle's age, there is a small amount of perishing around the gear lever rubber.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A super smooth 2.3-litre V6 rests within the engine bay of the Cortina.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.3-litre V6 has been recommissioned with many new parts fitted and runs superbly with no issues reported.

Fitted with a three-speed automatic gearbox, the change is smooth, and the V6 pulls strongly.

Suspension and Brakes

The Cortina has had new Gaz adjustable shock absorbers fitted along with a complete set of poly bushes. This has given a firmer feel to the ride and improved handling.

The complete braking system has been overhauled with new hoses, discs, and callipers, ensuring the car comes to a stop in a straight line.

The Drive

Taking you straight back to 1980 with the exterior and interior colour scheme, the Ghia edition of the Cortina was the top of the tree and the more desirable model to own. The Cortina is great fun to be in with plenty of comfort, and the smooth V6 makes it a usable classic with ample power.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be in good condition and is said to be working correctly. The original Ford radio cassette is fitted and working as it should, as is the clock, which is usually one of the first things to fail.

History and Paperwork

Okay so being in storage for ~34 years hasn’t helped to create an extensive history file, but on the flip side, what a time warp car this is.

The paperwork with the Cortina mainly comes from 2021, when the car was given the extensive restoration, and this shows some of the parts purchased to resurrect this classic Cortina.

It was the final incarnation of the Cortina before Ford moved to the Sierra. This time warp classic was held in storage for ~34 years before being given a full body refurbishment in 2021, which has given it a new lease on life. You can see photos from the restoration in the paperwork section below.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

Hi Terry,
Are the coach lines painted on or stickers ? When were the coach lines put on, since it wouldn’t come from the factory like that ? Has it had front spots fitted at sometime, since I see rubber grommets on the top of the bumper ? Is the wiring for spots still there ?
Many thanks.
