Ford Escorts have dominated the British roads since global rally fame in the seventies. This example was imported from France and the LHD steering that doesn’t compromise performance. Ford Motorsport add their character with distinction, producing 8,659 examples.

We met Matthew, a huge rally enthusiast and collector to see why he is looking to sell a rare example in the UK.

Recent Buyer Review – Simon Welsh on 1st May “Found my ideal 90’s sports car on Trade Classics. Living in Bournemouth and the car being in the Midlands I relied heavily on the advert, photos and videos.

On picking the car up I wasn’t disappointed. Everything was as it had been described. So I got straight into it and drove home. What a drive put a smile on my face.

Thanks very much Trade Classics and I’m now looking out for my next classic to add to the collection.”.

THE CAR & Matthew

Matthew is a passionate car collector. One of his good friends in France owns a huge collection and has been selling Matthew some of his cars, like this one. Please watch the ‘Meet the owner’ video as Matthew talks to us about himself and the car.

This RS1600i was imported in July and subsequently registered in August. Matthew has preserved it in a dry location and has only done miles to the mechanics. He is looking to get a sought after Lancia in the future so he sees this as a good opportunity for all parties.

We are excited by the originality and are looking forward to finding an enthusiast that will get to work and treat it well after crossing the English Channel.

EXTERIOR

You won’t find many examples like this on the British roads. This limited edition was sold after 8,659 examples were produced, the colour was not available in the UK. This comes with it’s original silver paint and sporty stripes. Please see our photos and exterior video which details the car immaculately.

Wheels & Tyres
The car is fitted with 195/50/15 tyres that appear in really good condition. The original 15 X 6 inch RS seven spoke alloy wheels are still looking in good condition also with ‘Ford Motorsport’ decal.

Paint
Original silver with black stripes with wear across the car as you would expect. Please see the exterior video.

Bodywork
Matthew mentions the front bumper had been replaced in France – one of the few parts changed to this example. The body panels on the side are in good condition. There are some defects to the front and rear that a new owner can review.

Glass and Trim
All is in good condition upon our visit.

INTERIOR

In the driver’s seat you are equipped with a rally steering wheel and a simple set up to enjoy the drive ahead – a show perhaps? The neutral interior allows the new owner to add their own character. Unchanged speaker system. The overall interior is in good condition.

Seats and Carpets
The original racing-style seats are at a good standard. ‘Ford RS’ embroidered on each. We were pleased with how comfortable they are to sit in.

Dashboard
The speedometer meter has been changed. The overall dashboard is finished in grey with black dials.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both are in original and good condition with no issues.

MECHANICS

This RS1600i comes with fuel injection and five-speed transmission. It is many enthusiasts dream to own one of these, and we can’t wait to find this example a new home. Matthew mentions he has been to the garage and is suspecting a problem with one of the injectors – this can be reviewed in the video.

Engine and Gearbox
Please watch the ‘On the Road’ video to see the car fail to start first time, then successfully on the second time of asking, and then being driven on the road with us. The gears were changing well on our visit and the clutch has been changed since arriving from France.

Suspension and Brakes
The brakes are biting well as suspension shows no issues.

The Drive
Jacob felt comfortable in those racing seats and with Matthew driving through Cardiff. The left hand drive doesn’t compromise the performance design as mentioned elsewhere in articles.

Electrics and Other
Electrics all work to standard.

HISTORY

Matthew received little paperwork from France with some registration documents, but is knowledgable about the car – upon review we liked the originality of the car. Matthew is happy to correspond with anyone interested about the vehicle in our comment section, ensuring full transparency of the sale.

The car was registered in the UK on 03.08.2019 since arriving in July.

Passed MOT on 08.08.2019.

Current mileage indicated is 34,313. There is an original speedometer that states the other miles the car has done.

HPi Check Results
– HPi clear – a new HPi check will be actioned and supplied by us.

OUR SUMMARY

This limited edition has lived in mainland Europe and has been enjoyed by previous owners. We see this car as a great opportunity for any fanatic to remedy the engine issue, and then enjoy the car from there.

There are so many characteristics about this example that we absolutely love – Ford Motorsport decal, steering wheel, headlights – absolutely stunning, a true classic.
