Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

The Capri is already among the most iconic Fords around, and this is a Tickford - one of the rarest, most desirable versions of this sports coupe.

Marketed by Ford as “The car you’ve always promised yourself” and regarded as the “Mustang of Europe”, the Capri was a sensation from day one! Ford introduced the Capri at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969. Beautifully designed by Philip T Clark, who had been involved in the development of the Mustang, the car was available with a wide range of options and was an instant hit. This legendary coupe went on to sell over 19 million units over a 17-year production run.

Aston Martin owned Tickford offered specialist engineering and coachbuilding services to a wide range of vehicle manufacturers. In total 85, 2.8L, V6 Capris were stripped down at the Tickford facility, and subjected to extensive modifications including a front mounted turbocharger, upgraded suspension, a limited slip differential and uprated brakes. Cosmetically the car was given a body kit and Wilton carpet together with leather and wood trim surfaces. The result raised the output from Fords Cologne V6 to 208BHP delivering a top speed of 137MPH and 0-60 in 6.7 seconds.

This Tickford Turbo Capri 2.8 (number 36) is a great example that’s been extensively restored, copies of the original build sheets and communication are included. It’s been with its current owner since 1996, an experienced Capri enthusiast, who has restored the car over the years. More recently, it's done very little mileage, just being kept stored in the vendors garage. It's a solid car that is just waiting for a new owner now to put some elbow grease in and get it ready to show again.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Keenan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

For me the Tickford is the ultimate Capri – it looks fantastic, drives brilliantly and people just love it.

Keenan is a huge fan of the Capri and has owned many over the years. “I’ve been restoring cars since I was 17 – I’d always wanted the rare Tickford model and when I found this one in a scrapyard in 1996, I just had to have it“.

He goes on to say, “The car has been fully restored and improved in my ownership – I’ve absolutely loved doing the work, but I simply don’t use it enough now. It’s such a special car it really needs to be driven and enjoyed by a new owner”. Keenan will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The already iconic styling is dramatically uplifted by the Tickford body kit – and in black too, fantastic!

Wheels and Tyres

The 7 spoke, 15-inch, alloy wheels have been fully refurbished, and appear in excellent condition, we could see no signs of damage or curbing. Keenan tells us that these wheels were optioned by the original owner.

The wheels are wearing Avon ZV7 195/50/15 Tyres all round which are dated 2018 and have plenty of tread remaining. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The Mk3 bodywork was transformed by Tickford, aggressive front and rear spoilers and side skirts, it took an already masculine design to another level.

This car stands straight with no apparent panel distortion. Doors, bonnet and tailgate all open and close positively and panel fit looks generally good. The offside door is not quite flush when closed and would therefore benefit from some attention. Keenan mentions that he had "any welding the car needed in typical Capri areas, actioned early in to the restoration". Watch the video review to see the bodywork in detail.

Paint

The deep gloss black paint looks even and consistent across the car, a perfect match for the Tickford bodywork. There are no significant scratches and, having been resprayed as part of the rebuild, age related wear is minimal.

Overall, the paint looks good, and we think will be improved further with a few hours polishing over a weekend for the new owner. If we were being really picky, it looked like there was a slight reaction in the paint on the lower half of the offside door, very hard to pick up on camera and only visible if you are really trying to scrutinise the car. View the images to see the detail.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side and rear windows, mirrors and lenses all appear to be in excellent condition with no issues to note. Trim is in great condition with the all important Tickford badging looking superb.

Interior

A heady mix of luxury and sports car functionality – the Tickford cosmetic treatment to the interior works perfectly.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the Recaro seats, these are trimmed in cloth and look in great condition, firm and comfortable considering the age. They only present some minor age related sagging to the headrests, and we think they could be brought up a level with a professional clean/detailing session.

Carpets also look in good shape with only minor signs of wear. The headlining appears in very good condition.

Dashboard

The Tickford wooden dash looks great and adds a touch of opulence to this sporting interior. The wood looks in great condition with no signs of damage, peeling or cracking.

The instruments all appear in good condition with no scratches or chips, but again, a deep detailing session could enhance their appearance further. The clock face is misted which may suggest the rubber seal needs attention.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Sporty, three spoke Ford steering wheel and gear stick present well with signs of age-related wear. Overall, the interior is sound with no signs of significant damage, but as mentioned previously, detailing to make it look its very best could be a nice job for a new owner.

Mechanics

What a combination - Fords legendary Cologne V6 blessed with the Tickford Turbo magic.

Engine and Gearbox

Fords tried and tested Cologne 2.8L V6 with a front-end turbocharger provides the Tickford Capri with ~208BHP enabling a specified 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 137MPH. We think you’ll agree, that’s impressive.

Keenan confirms the engine and turbo were rebuilt as part of the restoration and unleaded heads have been fitted along with an uprated ignition unit to improve combustion. The original ignition unit is available with the car as pictured.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox and Tickford Capris are fitted a limited slip differential. The engine bay appearance could be improved with some detailing.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has disc brakes all round. Keenan confirms that grooved front discs have been added as an upgrade and the brakes all work exactly as they should.

Those with a keen eye will see from previous MOT history mention of the rear discs, these discs were unique to the Tickford Turbo and the only reason that Keenan hasn't addressed the advisory (they are no longer available of course).

The Drive

The car started well from cold, firing up quickly and settling down to a steady idle. Gauges looked good and emissions appeared clear. Check out the Cold Start Video to see for yourself. We were unable to accompany Keenan on a test drive as he has not been using the car and it doesn’t have a current MOT.

Electrics and Other

Electrics are very straightforward and uncomplicated on these cars. We are assured by Keenan everything works as it should to his knowledge. The car comes with the original radio/cassette player.

History and Paperwork

As Capri’s go the Tickford is considered the Holy Grail – with only ~85 made and an estimated 27 left, opportunities to own an example of this quality are rare.

The Capri is an icon and the Tickford Turbo has a legendary quality to it. It’s easy to see why – they’re rare, they look great, and they have the performance to match. This Tickford is great example. It’s been lovingly restored so all the hard work is done and with a bit of fettling and detailing we believe this car will be ready to show. Having covered fewer than ~1,000 miles since 2006, Keenan thinks it really needs to be used and enjoyed.

The documentation contains many receipts for the work that been carried out and the all-important build sheets obtained by Keenan from the Tickford museum showing this as car number 36. Also included are some past MOT certificates and Tickford Owners Club magazines.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
