Introduction

Colin Bashford
Proffesional Consigner

In 1983 Head of Ford Motorsport, Stuart Turner, started a project to make Ford competitive again, and thus the Sierra RS Cosworth was born.

Taking the humble Sierra, Ford engineers fitted a turbo charged 2.0L engine capable of producing 204bhp in the road going version, and 300bhp for the race car. The RS Cosworth also got outlandish styling with wide arches, bonnet vents and that now iconic whale tail rear spoiler.

The Sierra RS Cosworth was first shown at the Geneva Motorshow in 1985, with only 5,000 planned to be built and according to the catalogue, the Cosworth would reach 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph.

This specific car has been owned by Paul for the last ~16 years, who tells us that he's never taken it out in the rain and the car flew through an MOT a few days before our visit.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Wide arches, bonnet vents and the legendary whale tail, the Sierra RS Cosworth certainly turns heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The split rim wheels looked in good condition - being really picky we did notice the lightest signs of kerbing on a couple of wheels, but really nothing major.

A matching set of Maxxis Victra were found on the car, all looked in good condition with plenty life left in them.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Cosworth looked in good shape with shut lines around the car looking good too and we didn't notice any signs of any serious corrosion on the outside of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The black paint looks very good - we just noticed lightest signs of swirl marks but nothing heavy at all and of course it's more noticeable with black cars - however a simple machine polish will pay dividend.

As expected, we noticed some stone chips around the car, on the usual areas, e.g. front bumper, wheel arches and wing mirrors. Again nothing major and they look in line with the age / use of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looked good condition too - please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Recaro seats, boxy dash and chunky 5-speed gear stick - the '80s are calling when you step into the Sierra RS Cosworth.

Seats and Carpets

Grey cloth with check red inserts on the Recaros and they looked in good condition - as usual the drivers seat bolster was showing a slight amount of wear, but actually very good considering the age / use of the car.

The carpets looked in decent condition - the mats have done a great job protecting them. You'll see the mat on the driver's footwell was a bit tired with the S and a part if the W missing from 'Cosworth'. Again not a big deal and an easy change for the new owner.

The roof lining is all intact, but you'll notice some sagging towards the back - this may need some more urgent attention by the new owner.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The squared off dashboard is a proper hark back to the '80s, the dials looked in great condition with no scratches on the glass.

An aftermarket Sony MP3/CD player was also fitted at some point in the past.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 3 pronged Ford steering wheel was present and it looked in good condition, showing some expected wear from over the years.

It's the same story with the gear stick, i.e. all original and showing the age / use of the car.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The Cosworth tuned 2.0L Pinto engine produced ~204bhp, launching the Sierra to 60mph in ~6.5 seconds - a rapid car in the '80s.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up first time without issue and during our short drive with Paul the engine performed very well, with no unwanted noises noticed.

The manual gearbox was going into each gear well too - there was no grinding or other unwanted noises either.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On the short drive we didn't notice any unusual noises from the suspension - it felt comfortable too, not too stiff for the road.

We didn't get a chance to aggressively test the brakes fully, but during normal driving they stopped the car well without any squeaking or pulling on the steering wheel.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

We only took a short drive on private land as the car is currently on SORN, the car did feel good with no strange noises coming from the engine, gearbox, suspension or brakes.

We did notice a few creaks coming from the cabin, which is a normal occurrence on a Ford of this era and could be reduced with some detective work.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

Paul assured us that everything is working well on the car, i.e. all the electrical components fully functional.

The winding sunroof was working - Paul told us he hadn't opened the sunroof fully for many years, but it opened with no issues.

History and Paperwork

The Sierra comes with a fresh MOT and it has only covered ~21,000 miles since the year 2000, with just over 200 miles covered since 2020.

Prior to Paul buying the Sierra it received an engine rebuild, carried out by Abell Motorsports in 1999. The original service book was present, as well as many receipts including dyno print outs and an invoice for a new windscreen.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
