Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With a 2.8L engine up front, a 4-wheel-drive system, and 5 doors, the Sierra XR4x4 is equally sporty as practical!

The Ford Sierra had its launch at the 1982 British International Motor Show, starting life as a mid-sized, humble family car. With an array of engines available, the Sierra had something for everyone's needs. The XR4x4 was introduced in 1985, with a rear-biased four-wheel-drive system fed by a 2.8L V6. Originally only available in a 3-door guise, the 5-door became available not long after.

This specific car is a Sierra XR4x4 Mk2. It comes from ~5 years of ownership, who has kept the car garaged during this time. It was recommissioned by McConville & Walker in 2021, where it had cylinder head work actioned amongst some suspension work too. The car has only covered around 11,500 miles in the last 12 years, and it has a current MOT valid until 28.02.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Stuart the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Sierra always attracts attention wherever you take it.

Stuart has owned the XR4x4 for approximately 5 years, enjoying working on it as much as driving it. He tells us "It's simple to work on; you don't need to plug a computer in like modern cars".

With his collection of cars, Stuart finds less time to spend driving the Sierra, so he has decided to sell it with us. He hopes the car will go to someone who will appreciate it as much as he has. Stuart will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With a more subtle body and a small rear spoiler compared to the XR4i, the XR4x4 is a bit of a sleeper.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 7-spoke wheels from factory are fitted, some showed scratches but looked in very good shape otherwise.

All wheels were fitted with Uniroyal Rain Expert tyres, which appeared to be in great condition with plenty of tread remaining. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork around the car looked in good shape. We didn't notice any dents, and the shut lines looked good too. However, we did notice the odd scrape on the car, namely on the front of the bonnet and the driver's side mirror. Additionally, there were some small signs of corrosion on the wheel arches, though nothing major we think.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish around the Sierra looked in good shape, with decent lustre and matching colour across all panels. As mentioned above, there are some scratches around the car, and the paint is slightly chipped on the edge of the driver's door. The rear spoiler had some paint blemishes, and we noticed some stone chips on the bonnet, which you can see in the photos below.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the Sierra looked in good condition; we didn't notice any chips or cracks on the front windscreen. All seals looked in great condition too, including the sunroof, which was fully functional during our visit.

The plastic trim around the car was looking a bit faded in places as often is the case given the age of the car. The door handles and the plastic next to the rear door windows were quite chalky. As mentioned above, the rear spoiler had some marks on it and the surface looked uneven. There was also some corrosion coming through on the plug on the driver's side of the spoiler.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

A classic 80s Ford interior featuring a two-pronged steering wheel and grey cloth seats.

Seats and Carpets

Stuart keeps seat covers on the front seats. Underneath, the cloth seats looked to be in great condition; we didn't notice any rips in the fabric of any seat. However, being picky, the outer upper bolster of the driver's seat did look a little tired. The driver's door card was also quite dirty and would benefit from a clean.

The carpets looked to be in good shape overall. We did notice a slight stain in the driver's carpet, but it's not a major issue. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

A square dashboard houses the instrument cluster; the dials looked clean with no scratches or haze in the plastic. The odometer read 71,135 at the time of our visit.

The radio was missing from the dashboard; Stuart informed us he didn't have it. The top section of the dashboard on the passenger side did not fit flush with the main part, and we noticed a slight nick in the surround of that section.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original two-spoke steering wheel was present and looked in good shape, with a few marks that looked like they could be cleaned, but no tears or scratches were observed.

The gearstick also appeared to be in good condition, with the gaiter also looking good.

Mechanics

A 2.8L V6 powering all four wheels through a manual gearbox – does it get much better?

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up on the first attempt and idled smoothly. On the road, the engine felt powerful with plenty of torque. The gearbox shifted well, with gears engaging as expected.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see and hear for yourself the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car performed well on the road; the suspension felt supple, handling bumps in its stride. We didn't notice any unwanted noises from the suspension while driving with Stuart.

The brakes stopped the Sierra effectively, with no pulling on the steering wheel. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

Out on the road with Stuart, the XR4x4 felt great, with the engine pulling well and no unwanted noises coming from under the bonnet. The gears engaged effortlessly without issue.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

The Sierra doesn't have too many electrical components. While we didn't test everything, the windows and clock were working fine. Stuart informed us that everything else was functional to his knowledge, except for the missing radio.

History and Paperwork

The car comes to market from ~5 year ownership, the car getting some recommissioning work in 2021, these 4 door XR4x4 are rarely seen these days.

Stuart has spent some money getting the car up to his standard, keeping receipts for various parts including gearbox mounts, springs, shocks, callipers, steering pumps, and sills.

There is a detailed breakdown of the recommission work and various other parts fitted by McConville & Walker at a cost of £2,200 that was actioned in 2021.

Stuart has kept the XR4x4 well maintained during his ownership, storing it in his garage. It has covered only around 11,500 miles in the last ~12 years and comes with a current MOT valid until 28.02.2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
