Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A highly desirable performance saloon of the 1990s - this Sierra RS Cosworth 4X4 comes fresh to market from a 29 year ownership.

Fast Ford did what it did best tuning regular work-a-day saloons into rally and race winning machines attainable by most. The Sierra RS Cosworth 4X4 was designed to win races, with its turbocharged 2.0L 16 valve engine it produces around ~220bhp, driving all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. This particular example comes equipped with Lattice alloys, Recaro front seats and a trip-computer making it a stand-out car in its day.

This Cosworth is coming to market from ~29 years of ownership and comes with some history that details upkeep and maintenance of the mechanical aspects of the car. Presented in an attractive Flint Grey over black colourway, it's a lovely specification which gives this Sierra that extra appeal.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Keith the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always been into performance cars and back in the '90s I was after a car that could cope well on the motorway, while being extremely delightful down country B-roads.

Keith has thoroughly enjoyed ownership of this Sierra RS Cosworth 4x4 over the previous 29 years, he's had the car in his dry garage, reserved for sunny weekends only which the mileage and condition clearly reflects.

Keith was hoping to keep this example to enjoy for many years over his retirement, however due to lack of use and two other cars now, he is looking at cutting down his collection.

Keith will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Flint Grey and its Cosworth touches gives the car a striking look - a real head-turner back in the day.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original 15" Lattice wheels from factory, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any major damage, with just the slightest signs of curbing in places on the outer rim.

The wheels are fitted with Avon ZV-3 tyres and these appear to also be in good condition, dated 2004/08 with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the outside walls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Ford looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, everything looked good and straight.

We did notice some light wear marks to the front bumper, take a closer look at these in the detailed images below.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in this iconic Flint Grey colour, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

We did notice the odd very small and minor stone chip to the front of the car, however, you'll have to get really close to notice these.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Sierra RS Cosworth example looks great and in line with the ownership - we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit.

The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

The cabin in this super saloon has been well cared for - the luxurious black leather Recaro seats offer comfort and performance.

Seats and Carpets

The Raven Black leather Recaro sport seats have held their shape very well over the years.

There are only slight signs of age on the seats in terms of the expected creasing to the leather that comes with age.

A similar story is told with the door cards and black carpets.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this Sierra RS Cosworth shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~84,654 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel presents in great condition, looking to be in line with the mileage of this car - the black gloss gearstick looks good too.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

The Sierra RS Cosworth offers planted and assured driving on the road - a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Engine and Gearbox

The highly desirable 16-Valve 2.0L Cosworth block is fitted - on the day of our visit we started the car from cold with no issues and it performed well out on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Keith reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual five-speed gearbox powering all four wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Sierra RS, and the smart engine bay.

Please note, in the cold start section of the On the Road video you'll hear a high pitched sound in the garage. This isn't the car, it's actually an alarm type device in there to keep their cats out of the garage.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Fast Ford from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

An extremely fun and quick drive is offered in this Sierra RS Sapphire Cosworth 4X4.

The Sierra RS fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Keith, the car felt tight, it had plenty of power to push it along the road. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Keith reports that all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The car has it's original stereo unit fitted and onboard trip computer.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of ~29 years of ownership, this UK RHD example offers high specification and a powerful driving experience in a practical super saloon layout - Ideal for all year round classic motoring fun.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts that this Sierra RS Sapphire Cosworth 4X4 has received over its life.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

***RESERVE REMOVED*** Dear all, Keith and Linda have made a big decision today to remove the reserve. So the car will be sold to the highest bidder this evening. Good luck, Adam TC

Apologies that someone has asked part of my previous question. Would also like to point out that it seems the Sierra has had lots to back up the mileage in terms of MOT’s etc but no real engine work apart from 1997 which is a concern.

Hi Keith. Car looks beautiful. I see it will inevitably need an engine rebuild at this mileage. Do you have any receipts to support any modifications that might have taken place?

Thanks. Ashley

Hi Keith
Can you tell me if the engine has had any major work or a rebuild.
The video on startup in the garage sounds like some sort of air leaking and the engine is trying to stall and on the video reversing out the garage it sounds like it’s running in 3 cylinders can you advise if this is sorted or is it like this on startup only
Many thanks
