Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

High flying Cosworths were all the rage in the 90’s, these Fast Fords have been appreciating in value over time.

In 1983, Ford Motorsport Europe appointed a new head, Stuart Turner. He realised that Ford were becoming less competitive in motorsport and, after some discussion with the public relations team, Ford approached their long time partner Cosworth. Based on the Pinto engine, Cosworth had developed a 16-valve version which would prove to be perfect once the turbocharger was bolted to it, pushing the power to 180BHP in road form and 300BHP in race trim.

The choice of car to trial this new engine was the aerodynamically sound Sierra, which coincidently used a Pinto, so they knew the 16-valve Cosworth unit would fit. Firstly, the 3-door Cosworth came along followed by the limited edition RS500 model. Proving popular, the Sierra Sapphire was the next to receive the Cosworth lump, producing the 2-wheel drive Sapphire Cosworth.

The final release of the Sapphire Cosworth was the 4x4, like the one we have here today, which was produced from 1990 to 1992. This lovely example is a rare unmolested Cosworth, that has just ~57,024 miles on the clock from new.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Kyle, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Kyle has driven some Fast Fords in his time and enjoyed all of them - but the Cosworth 4x4 is something quite special.

Kyle is the custodian of this 1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. He became the guardian of the car after a family member sadly passed away nearly four years ago. At the time, the car had been in storage for a number of years, with just regular starting to keep everything ticking over nicely. The car had an MOT in 2017 as a precautionary check over and then put back into it’s storage bubble.

With another couple of years passing by, the Cosworth is simply not getting the use it deserves, and so the decision has been made to let another Ford fan take over the ownership of this low mileage, 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth. Kyle will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car, in the comments below.

CONTACT OWNER

Exterior

The Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 is instantly recognisable with the two bonnet vents, there to let the heat out from the turbocharged 2.0 litre.

Wheels and Tyres

Being an early car, the Sapphire is fitted with the Lattice style alloy wheels. There are a few kerb marks which can be seen more closely in the gallery and video.

The tyres are Goodyear NCT, apart from one which is a different Goodyear. All the tyres have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see more images of the wheels in the exterior gallery.

Bodywork

In the saloon format, the car had bags of practicality with the performance to boot. You can't really say it's a sleeper though, the rear spoiler, Lattice wheels and bonnet vents a dead giveaway to the sporting pedigree. The Sierra is in very good condition for the age of the vehicle. The doors look to align as they should, along with the bonnet and boot lid. There were no noticeable dents to mention when we looked around the vehicle.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

Finished in the Ford colour of "Moondust Silver", it makes for a welcome change to the many white examples you see. There are some age related chips around the car and on the bumper some paint has chipped off on the top of the passenger side. The car looks to have received paint to the boot lid bonnet and bumper at some point, possibly to freshen it up and cover up some chips.

The aluminium black roof rails have started to get some light corrosion, and the paint has come off in one or two places.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the wonderful Cosworth as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches and the seals look to be in good condition. The lights around the vehicle look to be in excellent condition, with no splits or cracks in any of the lenses at the time of our visit.

Please view the exterior gallery for more detailed images.

Interior

There can only be one seat choice for a Cosworth; leather Recaros, perfect.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather Recaro front seats are in nice condition, with just the smallest amount of wear to the driver’s upper bolster. This could easily be refinished by a leather specialist to bring it back to excellent quality.

The passenger seat is in good order with less wear. Matching leather door cards have unfortunately taken a turn for the worse, and the leather appears to have shrunk, showing the bare door card on the door pockets.

The carpets look to be in excellent condition throughout, including the boot area. Under the boot carpet is a fifth Lattice alloy wheel. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no scuffs to mention, and importantly no cracks, which was quite common on Sierra’s of this age. The instruments have been fitted with white dials to the faces, which are reported by Kyle to have been a factory fit option. The odometer is showing ~57,024 miles, and everything is reported to be working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good order, with no excessive wear, and the same can be said for the gear knob, both of which we would say is in keeping with the mileage for the vehicle.

Mechanics

Probably one of the most famous engines to ever have been fitted to any Ford - The turbocharged Cosworth 2.0 litre 16 valve does not disappoint.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay is very well presented, and quite important and definitely rare is that it’s not been modified. The car starts up as it should, being stored on a battery conditioner has kept it in good order.

Kyle reports that the car drives just as it should, pulling strongly through all of the gears with the gear change as you would expect.

There has been a stainless steel exhaust fitted which sounds fantastic, helping the cossie breathe a little easier. In the video section, you can see and hear the cold starting of the vehicle.

Suspension and Brakes

Kyle reports that the brakes on the Sierra are working as they should, bringing the car to a halt in a straight line. The discs look to have plenty of life remaining, with no lip on the edge of the disc.

He tells us the suspension feels nice and firm, and there are no noises reported to come from either corner of the car.

The Drive

Kyle loves the Cosworth, it draws attention wherever it goes, kicking off the nostalgia in anyone's mind who was 17 and onwards during the 90’s.

It is one of those cars that puts a smile on your face everytime you turn the key, and what more could you ask for from a car?

Electrics and Other

Ford fitted a radio cassette and just below a single CD player, which are believed to be working as they should, although no cassettes or CD’s were available to test them.

As it was the 1990’s, insurance companies would not touch you in a Cosworth unless you had a vault with armed guards to keep it in - failing that, a Tracker and a Clifford alarm would suffice. The Clifford alarm is working and we would assume there is, or has been, a Tracker fitted at some point from looking at the paperwork.

Kyle reports that everything is working just as it should and is happy to answer any questions.

History and Paperwork

Stored for a number of years has meant that the Cosworth is low mileage example - now serviced at the start of the year it’s ready to be enjoyed again by a new owner.

The Sapphire Cosworth retains the original handbooks for the car and audio. There are a few invoices dating back to the late 1990’s, and the install paperwork for the Clifford alarm.

More recently the car was serviced in February 2021, at the same time as having an MOT. There were also the diff seals replaced, as these were just weeping a little. The underside is in excellent condition as you can see from our mechanical review video, with no leaks spotted, and surface rust to the floor and suspension components is at an absolute minimum.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi. In the video it sounds like the engine is running on 3 cylinders/rough when revved. Can you confirm if there is a problem or not with the fuel/electrics that might be causing this? thanks
