Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A homage to a true classic - this rare example, limited run, 4.6L V8 brings plenty of Mustang muscle to market.

Famed for its appearance in the iconic 1968 Steve McQueen film 'Bullitt' where the Mustang was involved in a San Francisco car chase, the Ford Mustang Bullitt is something of a showstopper and a car that evokes a lot of memories for a lot of people.

With a really low production number, even if you're not familiar with the aforementioned film, this car is something of a rarity, this particular model being the 1,309th out of 5,808 produced. What makes this car even more interesting is that even fewer models were manufactured in this particular colour way of Highland Green which mirrors the colour from the Steve McQueen film.

Being part of a limited run, you'd expect the team at Ford to make this something a little more special than standard, this is no exception. Enhancements on these models include; a dual exhaust system, stiffer shocks, upgraded brakes, engine strut brace, exterior and interior design refinements as well as an increase in power over a standard 2008 Mustang.

Being a big fan of the 'Bullitt' film, the current owner has really looked after this car and treated it well. With just over ~1,500 miles driven on the car over the past two years alone, the car has been kept in very good stead. With just one previous owner, low mileage at ~36,064 miles on the clock and an impressive 4.6L V8, this car is in remarkable condition inside and out as well as being a really rare example.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Robert the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After seeing the iconic movie Bullitt, I fell in love with the Bullitt Mustang and discovered the 2008 replica was just within my price range.

Affectionately known to the owner as, 'Sally', Bob's Ford Mustang Bullitt is a car that has been loved and enjoyed, "Every mile I drive is a joy and you can just hear the reassuring grumble from the V8 engine. I watch heads turn as Sally goes past and aficionados often give me the thumbs up".

Having been purchased in a left hand drive spec, the technical team at Ford America worked their magic before the car was transported across the water. The production team have digitally remastered the sound of the exhausts from the car in the movie, reproducing this on the 2008 replica, "It’s a wonderfully deep, throaty rumble every time the car is fired up that is unchanged from factory specs".

Bob says, "I love owning Sally and I’m sad to be selling her but I only do around 1,000 miles a year and I don’t think I’ve ever driven her to her full capabilities. I would love someone to take on her ownership and care for her as I have done".

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

In keeping with the classic film, the car is factory de-badged with scoops and spoilers deleted, the subtle Bullitt branded badge is the only giveaway to the power contained within.

Wheels and Tyres

Upgraded 18" Bullitt package 5 spoke wheels are in excellent condition across the car including the tyres. Finished in a smart dark grey the wheels really set the car off with the subtle Mustang centre caps. BF Goodrich 'Urban Terrain' tyres are matched on all four corners and are date coded from 2015.

Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Bullitt.

Bodywork

No dings or marks were visible to the eye on our visit with the bodywork looking great across the panels. Low mileage has kept this car up to a great standard which is reflected across the exterior of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the gallery section for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

With two factory colour options being available in finish, the Highland Green presentation shown here is in-keeping with the car featured in the 'Bullitt' film. The darker metallic finish looks great across the car where we struggled to find issues with the paint.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all presented in excellent condition, with no obvious scratches or chips which we could see at the time of our visit. The trims and seals are the same, matching the rest of the vehicle.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking car the Bullitt really is.

Interior

Aluminium trim, revised cluster displays, machined cue ball gear shifter - this car has many unique design features which puts the owner at the heart of the driving experience.

Seats and Carpets

Dark charcoal leathers hold the driver and passenger comfortably in place when entering the cabin area. The beautiful interior has all the charm from factory wearing its limited mileage really well. If we were being particularly picky, there was some slight signs of wear on the drivers bolster section but nothing that caused us any real concern.

Floor sections showed to be dry underneath the carpet and wear was in keeping with the quality of the rest of the interior sections.

Dashboard

The revised cluster display on the Bullitt features some great looking gunshot font stylings and satin metallic trim offers a class edge to the suitably moody interior finish. Looking really smart throughout the cabin area we only noted some minor signs of marks on the centre console, but we had to look really hard to see this.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Bullitt's dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Keeping with its understated approach the cabin area is a no fuss setup designed to keep the driver focused on the task at hand. The Bullitt branded steering wheel centre badge looks great on the wheel and shows little signs of real wear.

The gear stick is beautifully machined into a cue ball style and looks great in the centre console section.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With a heart-racing 4.6L V8 under the bonnet, this Mustang Bullitt is every part as impressive as the movie equivalent.

Engine and Gearbox

Being part of a limited run, the Bullitt has its individual number stamped into the engine strut. This particular model is the 1309th vehicle made out of the 5,808 cars produced. With a really clean looking engine bay the Bullitt sounds fantastic from initial start up and especially out on the road.

The engine showed no signs of struggle when driving with the gearbox working through its paces without issue. Take a look at our 'On the road' video where we see the Bullitt start up from cold. We take the car onto some local roads with Robert to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

Whilst out on our road we took the car onto some local roads; we noted no knocks, or unwanted noises from the suspension and the braking showed no sign of pulling.

The only point to note is that due to the car not being driven much, the brakes could benefit from a little run in to remove some of the brake pitting which was noted on the recent MOT as an advisory. Also noted on the recent MOT, was the nearside front track rod end ball joint which would need to be repaired in the near future.

Take a look at our 'On the Road' video to see in real time how the car responds to the road and driving.

The Drive

With its low centre of gravity and balanced ride, the Bullitt takes on roads with gusto and precision. A Ford Racing inspired engine intake gives additional airflow to the engine and helps boost the 4.6L V8 to its full potential. Aggressive yes, but still friendly enough to be a great daily driver.

Stiffer suspension, engine strut for added stability through the corners and a tuned engine designed to sound like Steve McQueen's car from the famous film, gives the car great presence on the road. A real head turner for all the right reasons.

Electrics and Other

Speaking to Bob, the current owner, he let us know that he had no issues with any of the electrical components on the car, noting that everything was working as it should do. The air con and Shaker stereo system were working well and showed no issues with their functionality whilst on our visit.

If any further questions are needed about the electronic functions within the car, these can be added in the comments section at the base of the listing.

History and Paperwork

With just over ~5,000 miles being covered over the past five years this car has been well respected and kept at a considerably low mileage.

This car comes to market in excellent condition and showing really low mileage. Showing only ~36,064 on the clock at the time of our visit, what's even more remarkable is the low amount of mileage added over the past few years with the current owner letting us know that usage is currently limited. This makes the limited edition Bullitt even more desirable showing in a great way inside and out.

With factory spec largely unchanged, the enhancements on this model include; a dual exhaust system, stiffer shocks, upgraded brakes, engine strut brace, exterior and interior design refinements as well as an increase in power over a standard 2008 Mustang.

The Mustang is currently MOT'd until 06.10.2023 and will be available complete with a fresh new service before the final sale is completed. Robert told us, "The service will include replacing the requisite parts with genuine American Ford parts. Estimated cost is getting on for £700 but I am happy to pay that because I want full transparency on Sally’s condition".

Robert does mention that he's had the car serviced annually during his ownership, however, records have not been kept as there are no invoices for this in the paperwork.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Evening Robert,
I am keen to try and buy your Mustang, dubious about entering card details on site to bid, has the car reached the reserve figure you have on it yet or is it a fair way off!!

Hi Robert
I am currently the high bidder on the car.
If it does not meet reserve price, please get in touch with me via the TC platform. I remain very interested.

When you do the final service would it be possible to also get the dust jacket replaced that was flagged in the last MOT?

When was the last oil change done and how frequent was it usually done in the past?

The car was garages throughout your ownership or lived outside?

Any rust or signs of early corrosion?

Thank you in advance for your reply

Paul

Hello again Robert.
It could have been me near Oxford last month, I was that way on a Sunday.
What day was yours built on? It’s on the bottom of the build sheet. I’ve asked a question on the International Mustang Bullitt Owners Club group about the fact our cars are consecutive yet have out of sequence Bullitt numbers. The consensus is that the plaques weren’t fitted in any particular order.
All the best, Alan

Hello Robert, may not have been me in Headington, I had come along the A40 from the Witney direction and went up the A34 then off to Upper Heyford. Your build sheet is the same as mine stating 18th January so they are certainly production line sisters. However, my Marti Auto Works Report (that has interesting facts via Ford) shows my car was ordered on the 11th December ’07, scheduled for build on the 13th but not actually built until the 29th January ’08. It was sold to the dealer on the 2nd February. So not sure where the 18th January came from! I see the auction has less than a day to go with, in my opinion, a lot more money to go on it. I hope it sells! All the best, Alan

Dear Robert. Car looks lovely and honest and I love your long ownership.
Can you confirm no involvement in any accident damage? TC says no record of your annual local garage servicing. Are their invoices available and if not, is there a reason? Personal link with garage? I appreciate car will be serviced before delivery. I assume your local garage?
Many thanks, Mike T.

Hello Robert. Found your auction via ebay and as a fellow ’08 Bullitt owner I had to take a look. I am amazed to see that we have consecutive numbered Bullitts! My chassis number ends 449 and yours 448. The Build Sheet details are exactly the same so both the same spec. as is the price and the supplying dealer in Florida. The only thing I can’t confirm is the actual build date as this has been covered over. Mine is the 18th Jan ’08. The odd thing is yours is numbered #1309 and mine #1352 for whatever reason. As a Bullitt enthusiast I have made a log of all Bullitts I come across and so far have forty two 2008/9’s so they are quite a rare specimen over here. I’ll post a link to my club, the Mustang Owners Club GB in case your car may be of interest to someone. All the very best with your auction and hopefully I’ll come across your car at some point on my travels. Regards, Alan
