Introduction

Alan Davison
Vehicle Consigner

A small car with a huge reputation – the Honda Civic put Japan’s car industry on the map.

First introduced in July 1972 the Civic was the car that established Honda as a serious player in the North American and European markets. It was a modern design offering a transverse engine, front wheel drive configuration, great fuel economy and it was fun to drive. With a reputation for reliability, pretty looks and a stylish interior the Civic sold well and the model is now one of the best-selling cars of all time. With film roles in "Back to the Future" and "Police Academy" the early cars are now firmly embedded in automotive folklore.

These cars are rare now and one in this condition is a find indeed. It comes to market from 18 years ownership, bought very much for nostalgic purposes, and also due to the car being a low mileage example. As well as converting the car to a manual gearbox, the current owner has had it resprayed, leaving the car in condition rarely found. In his ownership he has only covered ~1,500 miles with only 100 in the last 10 years. We think you’ll agree this lovely little Civic is an absolute gem – take a look at the hi-resolution images and video to judge for yourself.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s the same as my first car, to the month model and colour!

When he acquired this lovely Civic 18 years ago, Philip was looking for something very specific. He tells us “My mum had the exact same car, and it’s what I passed my test in back in 1983, so essentially it was my first car. Same age, model and colour. I had been looking for one for a few years for the nostalgia value and this one came up. What made me go for it was the overall condition but especially the Ziebart corrosion proofing”.

He loves the colour, the condition and people are always interested in it because it’s rare and yet they remember them. It’s always been a good driving car and would probably benefit from having a tune up and the timing set by an expert. It starts and runs fine but just idles a little fast, he told us. Philip has converted the car to a manual gearbox and the original Hondamatic transmission is available to the new owner should they be interested. He always carries out his own servicing and tells us It’s just had an oil, filter and plug change plus a fuel drain.

This has been a labour of love for Philip but now he feels it’s time for the car to go to a new owner so he can focus on other projects, as space is getting tight. Philip will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Fantastically 70’s in stunning red - in wonderful condition, its like stepping back in time.

Wheels and Tyres

The 12-inch pressed steel wheels present beautifully in silver with no significant marks, dents or scratches. The red, Honda branded, centre caps are also in great shape.

The wheels are fitted with Semperit Top-Life 155 R12 76S tyres all round which appear free from cracking or obvious damage and have good tread remaining. Take a look through the images to see.

Bodywork

This little Honda looks fantastic. It stands straight, panel gaps look good, and we could see no obvious distortion. Doors, tailgate and bonnet open and close reassuringly – exactly as they should. As mentioned previously, Ziebart corrosion proofing and the condition of the underside is a big factor that captured the attention of Philip.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files so you can appreciate this lovely Civic for yourself.

Paint

The car looks stunning in "Bright Red" with a deep, even shine Philip pointed out a single bubble in the paint on the driver's side front wing and a few bubbles on the passenger side mud guard, he says they have been present as they are for many years. Having undergone a high quality respray in Philips ownership, he tells us he did his best to ensure the Ziebart corrosion treatment was retained. He also confirms that the car has always been kept indoors, even covered sometimes, and is regularly cleaned in his ownership.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side and rear windows look in great condition as do lights, lenses and mirrors. Chromework looks great and appears free from pitting, peeling or corrosion. There is a very small indentation on the rear bumper and some minor marks to the black painted centre section on the front bumper. We are being very picky though – overall the car looks great.

Interior

Stylish, practical and surprisingly spacious interior belies the car's ~47 years.

Seats and Carpets

The back cloth and vinyl front and rear seats are in really good condition with very few signs of wear. The stitching is intact, there are no tears or marks that we could see, and the door cards even retain their plastic protective coverings!

The black carpets are also in very good condition with only minor signs of wear, mainly in the drivers footwell as would be expected. The general presentation of the interior is more than a match for the stunning exterior.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in superb condition for a car of this age. There are no cracks, scratches or splits as far as we could see and even the wood effect veneer looks amazing. Dials and gauges appear clear and bright with no apparent cracks or misting. All switchgear appears unbroken and, while showing expected signs of use all symbols are clear and readable.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you see the quality of this interior for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel presents really well as does the Honda branded centre boss. We could see no damage or significant marking. Likewise, the gearstick and knob look in great condition and the H pattern marking is still legible and clear.

Mechanics

Lively performance, great handling and fantastic fuel economy set the tone for generations of Honda hatchbacks.

Engine and Gearbox

The straight-four, overhead cam engine in the Civic helped Honda establish a reputation for reliability, economy and performance. This car is powered by the 1,238cc engine and has been converted from Hondamatic to a four-speed manual transmission. The original Hondamatic gearbox has been retained and is available to the new owner.

The engine bay is tidy with no obvious signs or leaks or damage to components. On our cold start the car fired up willingly, idled steadily and emissions appeared clear. Once warmed up the engine continued to run well. Philip advised that the idle seems a little fast and believes the car would benefit from a tune up.

Suspension and Brakes

This model of Civic benefits from front disc brakes and independent rear suspension. On our drive out with Philip the ride was smooth, even over some fairly bumpy roads and the car stopped easily without pulling to either side. Philip did tell us the callipers were replaced with refurbished units around 1,000 miles ago, he said the brakes do stick very slightly most likely due to lack of use.

The Drive

A real step back in time. The car felt lively, willing and most of all fun. The front wheel drive configuration gave a bit of a “Mini” feel to the car and the acceleration was surprisingly brisk. The car felt planted, and braking was sure and certain. Philip described the steering as light and relaxing despite the lack of any power assistance. Overall, a great experience!

Electrics and Other

Electrics are very straightforward on cars of this era. All switchgear, gauges and dials looked in good condition and Philip assured us everything works exactly as it should, to his knowledge.

The car comes fitted with a period radio.

History and Paperwork

A low mileage example for this model in condition rarely seen, it comes to market from ~18 year ownership, nostalgia playing a big part in ownership, and the car coming converted to manual transmission.

Bring back fond memories of the his mothers car, Philip knew he had two have the Civic when it came up for sale, Philip has had the car converted to manual and had a respray completed and the car has only covered 1,500 miles during his ownership, with only 100 miles in the last ~10 years. In the past ~22 years the car has only traveled ~6,000 miles. In his ownership, he has carried out servicing on the car himself, and completed a conversion from the Hondamatic automatic transmission to a 4 speed manual. The current owner has also had a respray actioned, and took care to ensure the Ziebart corrosion proofing that has helped to protect this car over the years wasn't effected.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good morning Philip.
I wondered if you could tell me where the nearest port to you is for Collection? I’ve got to try and work out some logistics.
All the very best.

Hello, Excuse my ignorance, but will the car run happily on the new E10 fuel or does it need an additive to protect it?

Also, what is your experience of parts availability?
