The S2000 embodies all the elements of an exceptional sports car: it features a front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, and of course perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

The Honda S2000 was first introduced in 1999 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Honda and was produced for ten years - during that time, only 8,000 came to the UK. The car was given the chassis designation AP1 and featured a bulletproof 1,997cc inline four-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine. The F-series engine in the S2000 held the crown for the highest specific output of a naturally aspirated engine for ten years, only being dethroned with the launch of the Ferrari 458. The output was thanks to the 11.7:1 compression ratio, roller rocker valve train, variable valve timing (VVT), and impressive 1.82:1 rod-to-stroke ratio that let the 2-litre engine hit a spine-tingling 9,000 rpm.

Douglas has been the proud owner of this 2001 Honda S2000 for the past 23 years. In the early days, it was used as the daily commute car, which was thoroughly enjoyed for a few years until a house move and then use slowed down, to eventually be used as just a weekend toy, and as you will see from the MOT history, it hasn’t been used an enormous amount in the past ten years.

Douglas told us, "If you want it to take you calmly, discretely on the morning commute to work it faultlessly obliges and then at the end of hard day stuck in the office, if you want to go for a blast, roof down, it will effortlessly deliver".

Exterior

The Honda S2000 styling blends classic roadster charm with modern, sporty aesthetics.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in good condition; there are some minor age-related marks, but nothing excessive.

Douglas has always been adamant that the car has the same tyres fitted as Honda originally fitted. The Bridgestone S-02 are in like-new condition.

Bodywork

Looking around the sleek roadster, the bodywork condition is excellent; the shut lines all appear to match, and the condition continues to the underside, which is also very clean.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Silverstone Metallic paintwork presents well. There are some minor age-related stone chips, as you would expect; however, these aren’t excessive. Douglas also tells us the car has never received any paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in excellent condition - this was replaced several years ago due to a chip, but Douglas did insist that a genuine Honda screen was fitted.

The convertible roof is generally in good condition; there is a small split in the bottom corner just behind the side windows, and this is on both sides.

The plastic rear window is excellent, having been replaced by Honda.

Interior

The interior of the S2000 is known for its compact yet ergonomic layout, designed to wrap around the driver comfortably.

Seats and Carpets

Red leather upholstery adds a touch of sportiness and luxury to the cabin. It contrasts well with the black-coloured trim, enhancing the car's interior aesthetics.
The seats are in excellent condition with minimal wear, even in the high-wear areas, such as the driver’s bolster.

Red carpets are also in excellent order, with no signs of heavy wear. A set of factory mats is fitted, and they are in good order.

Inside the boot is clean and tidy, with the original CD multichanger and tool kit in place.

Dashboard

The dashboard and digital display instruments are in excellent condition.

The odometer shows a reading of ~53,890 miles, which will appeal to potential buyers, especially being backed up with an excellent service history.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, and the aluminium gear knob is free from excessive scratches often caused by rings.

Mechanics

Often labelled 'intoxicating' - the 9,000 RPM line can get addictive and only appreciated by people that have driven an S2000.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay presents well, and aside from a small patch of textured red paint removed from the rocker cover, everything appears to be in good order. The 2.0-litre fires up without hesitation and sounds as you would expect - excellent.

It is also worth knowing that the car has had the relevant recall carried out by Honda on the VTEC.

The six-speed gearbox has a very precise change, and the car pulls strongly through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension setup is firm but absorbs road imperfections well, delivering a smooth ride with no unwanted noises coming from either corner.

The brakes stop the S2000 as they should in a straight line, and with no juddering reported to come through the pedal.

The Drive

Behind the wheel of the Honda S2000, it's easy to see why the beloved sports car is well known for its high-revving engine and engaging driving dynamics. The 2.0-litre VTEC engine is indeed a standout feature, celebrated for its performance and responsiveness, not to mention the 9,000rpm rev limit.

The S2000 is also noted for its superb handling while still being very practical.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear is in excellent condition with no signs of wear to the buttons; even the iconic Engine Start button is in good order.

The original head unit is in place and, as mentioned, is connected to the boot-mounted CD multichanger.

History and Paperwork

What a lovely sight to see - Honda, Honda and more Honda invoices make up the extensive history file.

The car has always been taken to Honda dealers for any work to be carried out, with the exception of tyre fitting. The invoices are plentiful, as seen in the paperwork section, which we encourage you to take a look at as it's not very often you see simple things like wiper blades purchased from main dealers, another sign the car has been well cared for.

The owner’s handbooks are present, together with a stamped service book, two keys, along with the valet key and Toad alarm key fob.

The car was purchased from Belgium, but it came with a full UK warranty - see paperwork.

An MOT was carried out on the 26th June 2024, and it passed with no advisories; at the same time, the car was also serviced.

Please note: the registration plate will be removed but will be available by separate negotiation should you wish to retain it after the auction.

None that I am aware of. There are no leak marks on the concrete garage floor. Nothing from timing chain on start up that I can detect. Recent service didn’t show anything either.
