Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

This iconic sports saloon combined elegance with thrilling speed, setting the standard for style and sophistication in the 1960s.

Along with the E-Type and the XK's, the MK2 is firmly in Jaguar's "A Lister" category – its beautiful, luxurious, elegant and a serious performer. Introduced in 1959 the Jaguar MKII eclipsed its predecessor with improvements to handling, a more modern appearance and the availability of a 3.8L straight six engine. As well as offering typical Jaguar refinement, the cars were fast and nimble leading to them quickly establishing a well-deserved reputation as an excellent getaway car. In response, the Police ordered specially tuned and modified examples to both catch the criminals and patrol newly opened British motorways that, at the time, had no speed limits.

Coming to market from ~2 year ownership, this 3.8-litre manual is finished in "Carmen Red" having been resprayed from cream in 1990. A solid base to start off with, it has seen an extensive amount of renovation and improvement over the years. Over ~£20,000 has been spent by the current owner, with notable work carried out on the engine, gearbox, power assisted steering and front subframe suspension. The end result to all this is a lovely condition and a fine driving MK2 with some sensible upgrades, making it an extremely capable car to drive on modern roads.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Michael the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's like holding a piece of automotive history in your hands, every journey out has been an enjoyable experience.

The current keeper Michael, has owned the car for ~2 years. He used to run a workshop that serviced and repaired automatic gearboxes, and remembers working on Mk2's, "I worked on several Mk2's and always liked them. So in later life when able, I purchased the fine example here today". He bought the car in the knowledge that it was in need of a new clutch, which he has replaced with a diaphragm clutch, but otherwise it was a nice example. Once the car was in for work, one thing let to another, and as mentioned, extensive work to the running gear was actioned to the tune of over ~£20,000.

With a change of driving habits over the last few months, the Jaguar has seen less miles on the road than Michael would like, and so the car is coming to market for sale. Michael will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

This British beauty, with its sleek silhouette and wire-spoked wheels, is a rolling work of art that turns heads and stirs hearts.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" wire-wheels with knock off chrome centres. These show in excellent condition, with no signs of any major damage during our visit having been previously refurbished. The Jaguar branded spinner centre sections show well and without concern too.

The Jaguar is fitted with Pirelli tyres to the front and rear. All tyres appear to be in good visual condition, with a good amount of tread remaining. Front tyres were replaced in 2019. We were unable to date code the rear tyres. Take a look through the images to see the detail.

Bodywork

While looking over the Jaguar during our visit, we found that the car maintains good panel gaps, and the doors, bonnet, and boot open and close smoothly. We did not observe any major dings on the panels or corrosion of note.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Mk2 started life in cream, but has since been painted a more popular colour for the model of "Carmen Red". The paintwork has a smooth and even finish across all the panels, overall showing in good condition having previously been resprayed. There was a slight paint chip noted to the rear drivers side quarter wheel arch. A few age related stone chips were noted over the car, notably to the boot lid and a couple on the roof of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections on the Jaguar were in great condition, looking consistent with the car's age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration during our visit. The trim and window seals looked smart when looking over the exterior. The front "Leaping Jaguar" bonnet ornament and rear Jaguar and MK2 badges all presented well.

Check out the exterior gallery and review video. We guide you through all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

With its rich walnut dashboard, leather upholstery, and classic chrome details, this interior is a seamless blend of vintage charm and sophistication.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats are in good condition, the rear seating section showed with minimal use or concern. The seats show a little sign of patina, retaining the originality of the car. No obvious tears or rips on the seats or carpets, just genuine leather creases that show and preserve the history of this car.

The carpet in the interior is in great condition, and the carpet in the boot also shows the same level of standard. We cover the cabin area of the Jaguar in more detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The luxurious trim looks in excellent condition against the black Smiths dials and free from any significant marks or visible concerns when we visited the car. The mileage showed at ~20,938 on the clock. All the numbers and dials on the dash appeared clear and legible.

The gauges, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the MK2 dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden rim Moto-Lita steering wheel is in excellent condition, with no signs of major damage or wear. A Jaguar branded wood trimmed gear stick is in place, showing in good condition with minor age related wear.

Mechanics

Equipped with an overhauled overdrive manual gearbox, upgraded power steering, and updated suspension, the MK2 offers a driving experience brought up to more modern standards.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine appears to be in great visual condition and presented very cleanly. The engine operated with no issues, smoke, or unusual noises. We noted no issues from start up either which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the "Mechanical Review" video.

The engine and gearbox have seen lots of work, and in current ownership too as detailed in the invoices. The clutch was replaced with a diaphragm clutch, gearbox rebuilt and the seals on the engine amongst other work. Take a look at our "On the Road" video, where we cover the engine start-up and take the Jaguar around some rural roads to learn more about the car.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues with the suspension while on the road, and it gave us no concerns regarding its performance or handling. The steering was converted to a rack and pinion power assisted system in 2005. The suspension elements have been replaced and re-fitted with Gaz adjustable shocks to the front and rear in 2019. Other works at the time included upgrades to the front and rear anti-roll bar and stiffer front springs.

The brakes have also been updated in 2019 to the front, where 4 pot calipers and an upgraded servo were installed. These felt great and were able to bring the MK2 to a stop. The handbrake pads have also been previously upgraded.

The Drive

The MK2 cruises without effort, embodying the essence of a classic British sports saloon. With minimal effort whilst driving, the upgraded power assisted steering proved to be a suitable improvement.

On the road, this stunning Jaguar drives just as beautifully as it looks. It delivers a smooth, comfortable, and confident ride, while the engine pulls powerfully and effortlessly, offering a driving experience that’s both refined and exhilarating.

Electrics and Other

In 2009, the car was serviced and tuned at Flying Cat engineering, during these works the car was converted to negative earth. The original radio was overhauled and a high torque starter motor fitted. An upgraded heater was also fitted during these works.

Michael told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do, even the clock works! All switches, dials, and gauges also appear undamaged and in great condition.

History and Paperwork

A beautiful UK RHD, coming to market from ~2 year ownership, and both recent and past restoration work putting this 3.8L manual with overdrive and power steering Mk2 in fine fettle.

The Jaguar was the subject of much work over the years with the car comprehensively restored in 1990 by Autocats Ltd and repainted Carman Red from its original cream colour. In January 2005 the car was returned to Autocats for an overhaul, the steering converted to power assisted rack and pinion and a reconditioned all syncro overdrive gearbox fitted. Other later modifications include a high torque starter, 4 pot front brake callipers, Gaz adjustable sock absorbers with upgraded anti roll bars and stiffer front springs. The car also has a new heater matrix, an alloy radiator and sports exhaust.

It comes with a good history file full of bills and receipts and its original logbook. For a closer look at the MK2's history, we've included all the relevant invoices and receipts in the paperwork gallery section. Take a look over the content to see the full history behind the car and its historic works carried out.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check. Michael will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

I saw on the test drive the AMPS meter was flickering around somewhat, is it a gauge problem?

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
