Introduction

Adam Purrier
CEO

This is an exceptional MK2 in sublime condition - it also drives beautifully and has all the key ingredients.

A star of the track, road and silver screen, the MK2 is a genuinely classy affair with charismatic style and grace. Supported by a vast supply of parts and clubs, these cars make the perfect classic for many enthusiasts. Considered the most desirable version and the right colour and trim, this head-turning example with the iconic and spirited XK 3.8-litre engine has become one of the most desirable family cars of the sixties.

This car was sold new in New Zealand in 1962 and has spent the majority of its life there. It was subject to a series of extensive renovations and refurbishments throughout the ’80s and ‘90s and has been carefully maintained since then. The high standard of finish and work of the restoration is the overwhelming appeal for this MK2, but it is also the small things that this car has received which singles it out as a particularly nice example. The addition of a full set of Sprint Classic tyres and matching halogen spotlights demonstrates a high level of attention to detail, confirming that this is one of the best MK2s we've seen for a while.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Adam after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I saw this example and I couldn't resist buying it - I've used it recently for trips to the Cotswolds and enjoyed every minute.

We've known Paul for many years now and we have been fortunate to help him find new owners for some very exceptional and rare cars.

Paul worked for Jaguar Cars / Jaguar Land Rover as an Engineering Manager for over thirty years. His career took him through core Engineering Design to Special Vehicles and latterly Jaguar Heritage / Jaguar Classic where one of his achievements was the technical strategy and planning for the recent ‘E Type Reborn’ Programme.

Paul retired from JLR a few years ago in order to peruse his own passion within the classic car business; of course, specialising in Jaguars. So Heritage Classics Ltd was born and Paul now sources and works on Jaguars and other exotics every day.

Of course Paul is very well connected in the Jaguar world and when this car came up for sale he couldn't resist buying it, and using it before asking us to find it a new home.

Exterior

The splendid Carmen Red paint suits the iconic body contours perfectly - the condition is simply superb.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are sourced from the Series 2 version and are in excellent condition.

The desirable Sprint Classic tyres date from 2013 and have good tread - just a small detail that tells you that this car has been very well looked after indeed.

Bodywork

The bodywork has been subject to a light restoration in the past and has been executed to a high standard.

The panel fit and condition are very good, with even and equal panel gaps throughout. All doors open and close without problems, with just an oversized door rubber seal impeding the fit of the driver's door slightly (new and hopefully settling).

The underside is solid, with the chassis rails and jacking points in good condition.

The engine bay is solid, the insides of the boot being marked out as particularly clean - take a look at the images and videos to see just how good this is.

Paint

The paint finish is excellent throughout, the deep shine and lustre being even throughout the car.

There is no significant damage to the paint, with just the odd sign of age and wear.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with no observation of laminate damage, chips or cracks.

The chrome trim and finishers are in very good condition, with minimal issues with age.

The glass and door rubbers are in sound condition.

Interior

The sumptuous interior offers the perfect combination of wood and leather - this is a lovely interior that makes you feel part of history.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in good condition with minimal signs of wear, the leather displaying a pleasing patina, with no rips or tears, although the rear seat has seen a repair at some point.

The door cards and walnut finish are in good condition.

The headlining and carpets in excellent condition too and some recently acquired mats have been fitted to finish off a genuinely inviting interior presentation.

Dashboard

The walnut dashboard was subject to top-end restoration by a cabinet maker in 1992, and as a result, retain much of its lustre.

The dials, controls and switches are in good condition and all are said to be functional.

The car has an aftermarket '80s Blaupunkt tape player/FM radio installed - an easy modification for the new owner to refit a more period looking unit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The finishing and condition of the steering wheel and gearstick matches the general story of the interior, and have worn the years well.

Mechanics

With around 40K since the engine rebuild, this 3.8 runs as smoothly as a sewing machine - just listen to it hum in the video when warm.

Engine and Gearbox

To complement the excellent body restoration and interior presentation, the engine is also worthy of commendation, simply due to the running condition of the rebuilt unit.

Having seen a considerable rebuild in the '80s and '90s, the engine has seen around 40K since then, and runs very sweetly. It has seen several upgrades, including an alternator conversion and a 4-speed manual with an overdrive gearbox upgrade.

The car has an upgrade aluminium radiator and high performance additional electric cooling fan, which ensured no overheating issues even in the Californian summer!

The cold start represented no issues for the engine, with oil pressure and temperature gauges reading correctly. Please watch the On the Road video to hear the car starting - once warmed it it sounds very sweet. The hissing you can hear on the cold start is due to the choke being fully engaged.

Suspension and Brakes

The running gear has seen extensive overhauls, so naturally the suspension and braking systems cannot be faulted, with the brakes being particularly effective during the test run.

The Drive

The MK2 has a reputation for being a smooth ride, and this example was no exception.

Careful ownership profiles have meant this car has been maintained to a high standard.

No issues came out during the test run, which can be seen on the mechanical video. The suspension dealt with poor roads, with no knocking, with the steering, clutch and gearbox behaving as hoped.

The quality of the ride was near perfect.

Electrics and Other

The overhaul included continuous electrical work over the years to maintain reliability, which also includes the addition of Cibie DOT headlights and LED lamps.

Please also take a look at the images of the toolkit - it's just superb with all the period correct tools present. Again, it just shows the standard of care and attention that's been lavished on this example.

History and Paperwork

The depth and quality of the restoration have been carefully documented - a very well cared for car.

The car has been subject to an extensive rebuild and restoration in the past, with much of the work carried out in New Zealand where the car was originally shipped out to in 1962 as an automatic 3.8.

Starting with an engine rebuild in 1985, there are documents outlining the installation of a manual gearbox, front suspension and subframe rebuild, new clutch, carb rebuild, radiator recore followed by an additional engine overhaul in the early '90s.

The body was subject to a detailed and bare metal restoration in the mid-'90s. It spent time in the US and treated to continuous improvements and maintenance until it came back home late last year. It has recently been MOT'd and expires next February and also comes with the Jaguar Heritage trust certificate to authenticate its original spec.

Hi Paul
Just to be clear, is there and invoice showing an engine rebuild?
Is the head suitable for use with unleaded?
Thank you.

Kind regards

Hi Paul. I have a few questions on your very nice looking Jag.
If I was to purchase it I wanted to export to Australia which poses an few issues on importing older vehicles. namely Asbestos, Cleanliness and Air conditioning degassing.
During the restoration or records you have does the car contain any asbestos in the form of gaskets brake pads exhaust or in any of the insulation contained in the car, ideally certification from a recognized hazardous materials expert that it does not contain any asbestos would be great.
Cleanliness and free of all organic matter, in order to expert the car it must cleaned and certified as such.
Does the car have air conditioning ? if yes it will need to be degassed.
Also the vides did show some rust under the bonnet in the engine compartment beside the battery and on left side which looked like painted over rust but I am not sure. can you advise.

Thanks
Michael

Hi,lovely car indeed. There seems to be an issue with the fit of the rear bumper, namely it protrudes past the cut on the body and is missing its rubber bumper to body seal(the one with the chrome arrowhead finishers on its end)? Thank you
