This car was sold new in New Zealand in 1962 and has spent the majority of its life there. Can I also add that the 4 speed plus OD gearbox is from a slightly later Jaguar, fully rebuilt before fitting, so that it has synchromesh on all gears, so its not the usual ‘Moss’ box with its sometimes troublesome non syncro first gear.

There is a receipt on file from New Zealand Engine Reconditioners Inc. dated 1985, which itemises a full rebuild including new pistons, crank regrind, oil pump, bearings, head rebuild – everything you would expect. The mileage recorded 2 years later was 127009 so we estimate the mileage at rebuild at around 125,000 hence saying the engine has about 40,000 miles or so on it. Later on in 1992 the engine was removed as a part of tidying the engine bay and resolving leaks (the car is remarkably, if not almost totally, leak free for an XK) and the head was overhauled again.
As for unleaded – I always thought that as aluminium heads had to have valve seat inserts there was no problem. Digging around on the internet seems to confirm my understanding!

Also – the car last had an oil (using Castrol GTX) and filter service as part of an inspection around 1000 miles ago.
Hi Paul. I have a few questions on your very nice looking Jag.
If I was to purchase it I wanted to export to Australia which poses an few issues on importing older vehicles. namely Asbestos, Cleanliness and Air conditioning degassing.
During the restoration or records you have does the car contain any asbestos in the form of gaskets brake pads exhaust or in any of the insulation contained in the car, ideally certification from a recognized hazardous materials expert that it does not contain any asbestos would be great.
Cleanliness and free of all organic matter, in order to expert the car it must cleaned and certified as such.
Does the car have air conditioning ? if yes it will need to be degassed.
Also the vides did show some rust under the bonnet in the engine compartment beside the battery and on left side which looked like painted over rust but I am not sure. can you advise.

Hello Michael.
I’ve had a look at the records and they indicate that the brakes were replaced in 1988/89. The exhaust was replaced with a new Bell stainless system recently as it looks like new (labels are still on it!) but there is no record of when. We know that the car was retrimmed but not when, likely in the 1980s when a fair bit of expenditure took place.
All I can suggest is that these things are well past any asbestos legislation events and so ought to be OK, but thats just applying logic.
As for organic matter – I imagine that can only be certified by paying for the car to be steam cleaned underneath after sale, I imagine that can be organised.
The car is not air conditioned but has plenty of quarter lights and a fantastic centre vent below the screen (which all works).
I don’t believe there is any rot in the car at all – any rust seen in the engine bay will be light surface rust only I think, battery locations are notorious…

Hi,lovely car indeed.There seems to be an issue with the fit of the rear bumper,namely it protrudes past the cut on the body and is missing its rubber bumper to body seal(the one with the chrome arrowhead finishers on its end)? Thank you
Hi Duncan – I’m no expert on these cars and wouldn’t have known the bumper wasn’t fitted well although I was aware the seal is missing. I think the fit is explained by a receipt on file showing that the bumper was fitted new in the USA having been supplied by XKs unlimited in 2011 (this is about the time the car went to the US). I don’t think whoever fitted the bumper realised the bumper should be spaced further rearward or needed a seal. The seal kit is about £30, I’m confident that a good fitter could make this bumper fit perfectly.

Can I add that the car has its original engine so it is ‘Matching Numbers’, plus some other nice original features like correctly date coded wiper motor, Nivocode brake fluid reservoir and correct Lucas 2SJ washer bottle to compliment the correct tool kit and original jack.
