Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Jaguar Mk2... Grace, Space, Pace as Sir Williams Lyons' mantra goes. Famous for its use by cops and robbers alike, a popular British classic.

This MK2 Jaguar from 1962 comes with all the right features; manual gearbox with overdrive, 3.8L straight six, power steering fitted - there really is a lot to love about this car.

Coming out of 15 years of ownership, and just one owner before that, this car was fully restored by the vendor around 12 years ago. It still has its good looks to this day, winning first prize at a classic car show in Blenheim Palace 3 years ago.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Les the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I restored the car over a 6 year period shortly after purchasing it, and enjoyed every minute.

Les has owned the car for the last 15 years. The high level of expertise from himself and his peers has left this car as a stunning example. A fabricator by trade, Les worked his way through the restoration over a 6 years period. That labour of love has definitely paid dividends, and has even won him awards at car shows in the past.

During the restoration, Les upgraded the 3.4L engine to the more desirable and sought after 3.8L unit. With a manual gearbox with overdrive, and power steering, this example is in a really popular spec that most buyers look for.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

This Mk2 will turn heads for many years to come due to the extensive restorative work.

Wheels and Tyres

Wire wheels with knock-off centres and 15" tyres all around. The Roadstone tyres appear in excellent condition.

The wire wheels were added in Les’ ownership, as we believe the car originally had plated wheels. Take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Bodywork

Through Les’ ownership, the MKII received a much-needed restoration. You'll see in the invoices what panel replacements such as wheel arches and wings were needed. The doors have been dipped to remove any rust from them, they really do look spotless!

The car looked to be completely rust free on our visit, please see all the media. You could even make the argument that it's better than factory. The only blemish we spotted was on the rear nearside wing, where a unfortunately something fell off the shelf in the garage and dinged the car on the way down.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful colour of Carmen Red, after all the bodywork was completed a full respray was commissioned.

Even and a mirror like finish with all the reflections in our pictures, the only imperfection we spotted with the paint was a small nick on the lower offside B pillar. Take a look at the videos and photos to see the complete exterior condition.

Glass and Trim

All excellent condition in line with the rest of this stunning car. There are some minor blemishes on pillar trims that can be easily seen in the photos.

The refurbished chrome work is excellent whilst the light fittings look great too with a full set of LED bulbs behind the lenses.

Interior

Re-trimmed in leather to an excellent standard, it looks as good as new.

Seats and Carpets

The re-trimmed interior looks immaculate, especially the seats. Finished in a matching red leather, they've not seen much use with Les having only used the car for trips to shows etc.

As for the carpets, they are in excellent condition too. Watch the video review to see everything in detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard is original and Les has kept it in immaculate condition having freshly varnished the wood during restoration.

We believe that all dials and gauges are original except the speedometer.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are believed to be the original ones that were made for this example.

Looking in excellent condition, they were both refurbished during Les' time when restoring the car.

Mechanics

Jaguars 3.6L straight six, a manual gearbox with overdrive, power steering; a winning combination.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.8L straight six sounds great in the cold start video and soon settled into a smooth tick over. The engine was replaced during Les’ ownership because he wanted that bit of extra torque and power.

Fitted with a manual gearbox and overdrive, perfect for those longer journeys.

Suspension and Brakes

Both have been looked after and repaired / replaced by Les during his ownership. The underside is really spotless and it is a complete testament to Les for the quality of the restoration he carried out.

The brakes have been overhauled whilst the rear axle has also been repaired in Les’ ownership, leaving the car in excellent mechanical condition.

The Drive

Les informs us that the car drives just as it should do, the 3.8L engine pushing you along with ease.

Electrics and Other

The electrics on the car have been worked on as part of the restoration too, things like LED headlights and bulbs have been fitted across the car. A period-correct radio was fitted in the car but never actually wired, we are unsure whether it could still potentially work - we recommend listening to the 3.8L engine instead because its notes are great!

Horn housing on the front was dented by a speed bump and has been removed for repair - it will be fitted before the end of the auction.

History and Paperwork

One previous owner before Les, this car has been beautifully restored and upgraded over a 6 year period.

Shortly after Les purchased the car, he got straight to work in restoring the MKII. You'll see from the invoices for parts and work completed, and the condition of the car now, it was an extensive rebuild of the entire car; exterior, interior, mechanics. Just one previous owner before Les, and coming out of 15 years of ownership.

We are currently waiting for Les to send some photos across of all parts and accessories that will be included as part of the sale.

Checks carried out by us:
- Photo ID of seller.
- V5 checked against seller's photo ID.
- HPi checked and clear.

I think time should have been extended by 2mins for last minute bids. It could have gone higher for your client. No time to rebid

@Barnfather – yes we extend it by 1 minute if bid placed within the last minute. So it gives people a min of 1 min and max of 2 mins to place their next bid. It’s a balancing act as if we extend it further then auctions could run for a very long time. We do encourage people not to leave to last minute as we’re not like eBay and there’s no sniping. Thanks for bidding and supporting us 🙂

Quite strange no other bid was showing when the clock reached zero.
It may be an idea to get your real tile bidding checked into as the other bid never showed.
It wasn’t until I checked my emails that’s a higher bid has been place.
I’m not a bad looser but I was watching it constantly and no bid showed.

Good morning @barnfather – I’ve just looked into this as we haven’t had a report of that since we started 3 years ago and was worried about it. We are always online at the end of the auction to make sure things go smoothly and I saw the last minute bid go in straight away and auction extended dynamically and updates shown. However, I think I may know what happened to you – your bid was placed 7hrs 20mins before auction end at 11.40am. If your browser was left open and not refreshed at any time or nearer the auction end then it may have lost connection with us, meaning the updates on the auction wouldn’t be shown for you. It’s a shame but we’ll keep you updated with any other MKII that look just as good as Les’. All the best Adam

Hello
Are there any non-standard modifications apart from the engine, LED lights and PAS?
Is there any documentation and/or trophy that comes with the car to certify the Blenheim Palace classic car show 1st prize? Can you confirm exactly which show, year and category it was please?
Thanks.

Hi Mark, we’ve added a picture of the Blenheim show that Les took the car to and won an award. Also, the car was a winner at the “Woodcote Rally” in 2017

I gather from the information given it’s not matching numbers. Can you tell me what numbers aren’t matching.
Also is there jaguar specialist near you you can recommend you do an independent inspection. If not I’d like to send someone from. classic Cars in Bridgnorth.
Can you please advise.
Richard.

Hi Richard that’s right. As per the write-up, the engine has been changed and so this is not a matching numbers example. The car is located in Reading, so if your contacts at Bridgnorth are ok with travelling down then it’s something we can help arrange, give us a call on Monday to discuss. Best, Kulraj
