Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Instantly recognisable all over the world, the E-Type is arguably the most iconic sports car of all time - with all the right ingredients; covered headlamps and rear lights above the bumper, welcome the FHC Series 1.

We all know this car as one of the most iconic cars ever made, the E-Type is just stunning in every way, and this example is no different. With the long bonnet and a 4.2L inline-six hiding underneath, it is thing of beauty. It isn't just pretty to look at, it also has an ability to get up and go. With 0-60mph dispatched in ~7.0 seconds and on to a top speed exceeding 150mph - quite a thing in the '60s.

This specific car been with David for the previous ~19 years. It's true, David has not completed many miles in the car during this time, however, he certainly has not skimmed on upkeep and maintenance. The car has had extensive servicing work which included a brake overhaul, new clutch, and ZF hydraulic power steering.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Lovingly owned for the past ~19 years, David has given this E-Type the proper care it deserves.

During David's ownership, he has only used the E-Type for special occasional journeys, meets and shows - only covering ~9,600 miles in nearly two decades.

David would love to keep the E-Type as part of his collection, however he's now after another Lotus Elan Sprint for his weekend trips, and so he has decided to part with the Jaguar E-Type to free up the garage space.

David will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The beautiful lines of the E-Type are elevated with its Jaguar Racing Green paintwork - a stunning car from all angles.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with wire spoke wheels and these appear to be in good condition inside and out, with no visible signs of damage and very little oxidation present on the chrome finish.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P400 tyres all round which appear to be in good condition, with no obvious signs of degradation to the outside walls or tread pattern, and a good amount of tread left too.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Jaguar looks in very good condition - during our visit we didn't spot any obvious dents on the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in this rare 'Jaguar Racing Green' colour during the restoration in 2000, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

When walking around the car, we just noticed some very light scratches (we think would benefit from a machine polish) and some minor imperfections on the front bonnet.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this E-Type example looks in very good condition, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too with the smallest bit of cracking to the rubber on the passengers side.

The chrome trim and window surrounds all look in good condition.

Please take a look at the exterior photos to see the exterior in great detail.

Interior

Trimmed with refreshed green leather interior, the Series 1 features proper toggle switches too.

Seats and Carpets

The green leather sport seats have held their shape very well over the years since the restoration in 2000, just as you would expect for cherished and careful ownership. The seats represent the ~9,600 well and the level of care David has given the car over his ~19 years of ownership.

A similar story is told with the door cards and green carpets - all very good.

We just noticed some very slight wear to the drivers seat bolsters.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this E-Type shows no signs of any damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~9,665 miles (Since the restoration) on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

It's nice to see the original 'E-Type' wheel is fitted, with a lovely patina to the wooden surround. The steering wheel is also removable, it was fitted by CMC.

The steering wheel presents in great condition as too does the manual gear stick.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

You can see the 4.2L peaking out from the vents in the bonnet - a lovely sight.

Engine and Gearbox

David reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual gearbox powering the rear wheels.

Please review the history file to see the work the engine has had over the years, together with a rebuild around twenty years ago and since driven ~9k miles. David tells us the car has also had a recent new clutch fitted, a spin off oil filter has also been fitted.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the E-Type, and the smart engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth, stable and composed journey on the sweeping country roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Jaguar from this era, powerful and incredibly well balanced, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

No matter where you are traveling to or from, the E-Type provides a comfortable drive the oozes class and style whilst offering very respectable performance.

As mentioned previously, David has reserved the E-Type purely for pleasure and the occasional weekend away. The E-Type fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road we didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

The car was an absolute pleasure and provided a very enjoyable experience - please watch the On the Road video to see the journey.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but David reports that everything is functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

David also told us the E-Type has an electronic ignition with Magnicor H.T. leads.

History and Paperwork

A stunning previously restored E-Type that is ready to be used, enjoyed and shown.

As mentioned, this car is coming out of a ~19 year ownership with David. The car comes with its Production Record Trace Certificate originally distributed by P.J.Evans, Birmingham. Since production the car has had a newer engine fitted and has had a complete rebuild in 2000 by Mike Bean Restorations in Kent, a 5-speed Getrag gearbox was also fitted at the same time. The engine was rebuilt on later block, making it stronger with improved cooling. A galvanised fuel tank has been fitted recently, along with an electronic fuel pump.

The car comes with a period correct Motorola radio, spinner block, jack and hammer.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, tax discs and receipts David is selling this car with.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi David , could you please explain the reason for the MOT certificates showing a different chassis number on the certificates 01/02 and 03/04.
Thank you

Hi David,
1. Please can you confirm if the power steering on your car is hydraulic or electronic. I thought I heard you say “electronic” during the video but this could be my mistake.

2. Do you know who did the 5 speed Getrag conversion and / or from where it was sourced? Was it perhaps SNG Barrett? Do you know the gearbox model, maybe a 265?

I’m guessing that the gearbox was likely second hand when fitted. Do you know if the gearbox was rebuilt with new selector forks, bearings etc prior to fitting?

3. Do you have the original gearbox fitted to the car when new? If so, will it be included in the sale?

Thanks, Tim
