Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The 3.4 has future investment written all over it when compared to the prices 3.8 models are getting right now.

As we all know, prices have skyrocketed for original 3.8 models over the last couple of years. We also all know that 2.4 versions are lovely cars but they are just too under-powered, and as such are a little unloved. However, the 3.4 is no slouch and some argue is the sweet spot of the model range. So with properly sorted and original 3.8 versions going for anything between £30k and £50k right now, then the 3.4 certainly has gold status investment written all over it. Together with actually buying something that's beautiful, stunning and drives exceptionally well. Could the 3.4 be the smartest classic Jaguar buy right now?

In our opinion, this example is the one to have - it's not rotten like a lot of other sub £20k cars on the market right now. It has all the right ingredients, i.e. excellent condition, rot free body, period colour, preserved originality and of course that all important 3.4 with manual / overdrive. The icing on the cake is this car is fresh from a private collector that has been meticulous from purchase through to maintenance.

With mountains of service history collected over the years, we know this example has been cared for and Dean has made sure it drives as good as it looks.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Dean the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is my fifth classic Jag from the '60s and to be honest, my favourite - you really can't beat a sorted MKII.

Dean has really gone over and above to bring this Jaguar MKII back to life during his five years of ownership.

When Dean purchased the car it was already in great shape, he informs us no welding was required at all. Although, he treated the car to a lot of new parts which has further improved this excellent example.

As well as making the car look great, Dean really wanted to make sure the engine was performing just as it should too - the carburetters were rebuilt and new parts were fitted, including needle valves and gaskets. The brakes were also upgraded along with new 15" 72 spoke stainless steel wheels, which we think look excellent and just add that extra cherry on top.

Dean is a Jaguar man at heart, and this is just one of many in his collection. Unfortunately, he's having to let this one go to fund a new property purchase, but will be glad to find a new owner to use and enjoy, just as he has.

Dean will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Sweeping body curves, plus beautiful racing green paintwork, equals head-turning good-looks.

Wheels and Tyres

In 2015 after purchasing the car, one of the first things to change was the wheels. Dean opted for the 15" 72 spoke chrome wire wheels. They really do look the part and wrapped in Vredestein sprint classic period-correct rubber all round they handle great too.

Bodywork

We didn't notice any significant imperfections when we looked at bodywork, above or below - a very nice example indeed. Of course there are a few age related marks, but nothing significant and you'll see the full condition in the images and videos.

Dean has gone the extra mile and this week had the car professionally inspected for rot and corrosion, and the really good news is no rot was found on the underside. There's a lot of metal under there and hiding places for rust - but all given a clean bill of health. Once wire brushed and cleaned, it was then waxoyled to protect it further for a few more years. We've included before and after shots of the waxoyling to put your mind at rest, i.e. to prove nothing has been covered up. The video shows the before condition only.

Paint

Jaguar's metallic green really suits this car and we think it's one of the best colours for a MKII.

Across the car, the paint is even in finish and colour - it really is good with no signs of any significant imperfections.

Please have a look at the videos and images for a more detailed view.

Glass and Trim

Inline with the rest of the car - great condition with the rubber trim looking very good.

Please view the photos and videos for a more detailed view.

Interior

An all original interior allowing you to step back in time with the reassurance of a sound future investment.

Seats and Carpets

Biscuit tan leather interior was the correct choice, nicely matching the exterior green paint. The chrome seat belts with embossed Jaguar logo also looks great and compliments the finish of this beautiful car.

Along with the car's mileage, we think the leather has worn in nicely - we know the word 'patina' can be used in the automotive world to mean worn, however, the true meaning of this word is suited to this car, as having 'like new' seats would, in our opinion, ruin the interior of this time machine.

No tears or rips on the seats or carpets, just genuine leather creases that show its originality.

Dashboard

The walnut veneer looks really smart and oozes class - black dials with numbers are all very legible with no fogging or condensation found.

Dean reports all the switches and dials work as they should on this example.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A large classy jaguar steering wheel puts you in control of this sporty 3.4L XK engine.

The original gear stick with overdrive installed is in also fitted in this example.

Please look at all the images and videos for a more detailed view.

Mechanics

Earth-shatteringly quick for its day, it still puts up a good fight with a top speed of 119.9mph - this is the sports saloon to own.

Engine and Gearbox

Here it is, the 3.4L XK engine - very robust and quick, just what you need in a usable sports car.

Dean has had extensive maintenance and work completed to get this car running tip-top again. The carbs have been rebuilt and gaskets replaced for the best performance while importantly keeping it all original.

Please watch our "Cold Start" video above to see the car starting with no issues.

Dean mentions that the engine pulls just as it should and is in excellent condition with good oil pressure when hot.

Suspension and Brakes

Dean assures us that the car handles as you'd expect and stops just as it should do too.

While looking through the paperwork we noticed the brake discs, pads, master cylinder and wheel bearings were replaced with new parts in 2015.

Please view the images to see this in more detail.

The Drive

"An absolute pleasure to take out and drive along the coast on sunny days" says Dean: "The car handles great and the suspension is very smooth, just like it would have been in 1965."

Due to Covid social distancing rules, we couldn't take a drive out, however, Dean assures us the car drives beautifully and fault-free.

Electrics and Other

Dean has fitted an electric ignition on this example and left the original Jaguar radio in - very nice to see.

Dean reports that all other electrics are working as expected.

History and Paperwork

Not only one of the most original MKIIs on the market, you also get stupendous 55 Years of service history with this fine British sports icon.

This example has its original handbooks and manual and you can tell from the photos how meticulous the owners have been in keeping this car.

There are a few 3.4 MKII cars on the market, but as you know, when buying a Jaguar of this era there are cars and then there are cars. You could quickly find yourself drowning in expensive bodywork bills. But when you buy right, like Dean did, you don't end up in those situations. It's always best to pay a bit more for a fine / rot free example, as you'll save a lot money and headaches in the long run.

You'll find lots of work completed on the car over the past few years of ownership - Dean has made sure it's ready to be driven and enjoyed by the new owner.

Remember, wxamples like this don't come up every day, especially fresh from a large collection of a Jaguar enthusiast - so get bidding early and don't let this lovely example get away from you.

Hi Dean. Is the paint original or has she been repainted. If so when. I also saw in the film some corrosion under the driver door Perhaps the film exaggerated this? Can you give an honest assessment please. Thanks

Dean, is delivery to Germany possible? Otherwise, when I pick up the car in person in Cornwall, can I drive it on its own axle back to Germany?

Hi Dean. Really nice looking car. Jaguar man myself.. Has the car been off the road for some time. If so how long? Also would it benefit from all new door and screen rubbers? Difficult to see on the video, but was / is there damp below the rear windscreen? Also has the front wood veneer suffered a little from damp over time? Thanks. Graham
