Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

One of the finest mid-60s British sporting saloons, the S-Type is a genuine delight to drive and to ride in.

Unleashed in 1963, the Jaguar S-Type should have a far better standing in Jaguar folklore. Partly overshadowed by its impish little sister, the MK2, the S-Type is actually a far superior machine. The S-Type takes all of the good bits from the MK2, including those silky-smooth XK engines as well as its presence, comfort and interior decadence. By completely re-engineering the back half of the car, Jaguar not only improved the rear headroom and boot space, but thanks to the upgraded rear suspension and steering systems, gave it a superior ride to the MK2.

Today the S-Type stands out as a car that offers far more substance at a more appealing price than the MK2. Many of those who have driven the S-Type can testify this and it provides the same style, comfort, parts availability and performance. Created as the businessman’s express for the Motorway age, the S-Type eventually outsold the MK2 and became something of a well-kept secret for those looking for fast, comfortable and robust family car.

Registered in 1965, this beautifully presented 4-owner Golden Sand car has a full red leather interior and fitted with the desirable 4-speed manual gearbox + overdrive, and of course the 3.8-litre straight-six. It comes with an impressive provenance, with invoices reaching back to 1987, a documented bare-metal respray in 2003 and almost £18k worth of invoices, including £3,300 spent in 2023. It comes with a recent service, and two keys and has been in the hands of the current owner for 21 years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Syed the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is one of several Jaguars I've owned over the years - the comfort and robust engineering is like no other.

Syed fascination with Jaguars goes back to the early '60s when he first experienced his uncle's MK2 Jaguar. That memory stuck with him, and he’s been a devotee of the brand ever since. Syed came across this example via Chris Coleman the owner of The Jaguar Workshop in West London, who had the car in his workshop after the previous owner had left it there for a few years.

Weighing up the options, Syed was persuaded by its positive presentation and it appeared to be mechanically sound too - he took on the car in 2003, treated it to a bare metal respray and systematically kept on top of the maintenance.

Consistently garaged since it was finished, the car has been seeing less and less use in recent years, and due to personal circumstances Syed feels it's best to move the car on to someone else to enjoy.

Exterior

Smartly presented in decadent Golden Sand, this example is solid throughout.

Wheels and Tyres

The car was fitted with wire wheels shortly after its restoration ~20 years ago and all are cleanly presented, with tight spokes and minimal signs of age.

The mixed-brand tyres are in decent shape with the rear pair being around 10 years old.

There are mild signs of age on the sidewalls of the nearside front tyre.

Please note, the spare tyre will be fitted onto the rim.

Bodywork

The car was subject to a strip-down and bare metal respray in 2003, and any panel damage or corrosion was treated before the paint application. As a result, the car looks to have a solid underside.

Being picky, we spotted a little corrosion on the front section of the outer offside sill, just above the jacking point.

The exterior presentation also instils confidence, with no significant corrosion. A few mild imperfections were spotted on the metalwork; the inner lip of the front off-side wheel arch is mildly deformed and a dent was noted on the rear nearside wing, along with a couple of minor treatable dents in the same area. The panels fit flush against the body, with decent panel gaps. The doors open and close with minimal force thanks to the decent seals.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Golden Sand paint finish looks to be of a high standard and offers an impressive lustre. We noted a few minor surface blemishes, including some lacquer wear on the offside C pillar, a couple of underpaint bubbles, a scuff on the nearside rear door and some paint damage due to the dent on the rear wing.

There are a handful of minor marks elsewhere but overall the car presents very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and its seals are in decent shape, with no significant marks or damage, although the rear screen has a couple of dabs of lamination damage at the base.

The lights, lenses and the rest of the chrome are in good shape.

Some mild signs of age were noted on some of the original chrome but its worth considering how well they've lasted - the front bumper has light pitting and is slightly misaligned to the nearside of the body.

Interior

A near perfect display of red leather and decent wood veneer adds to the magic carpet ride.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather seats are in good condition, with no real signs of wear or damage - they are typically comfy and supportive.

The deep red carpets are also in good shape, with no significant marks or wear - they are all bone dry.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents positively, with mild signs of lacquer peeling noted on the top of the facia, and a few other small signs of age on some parts of the wood but it doesn’t distract too much. The car displays a decent array of switchgear, dials and controls - Syed has confirmed they are all working.

The rest of the trim, including the door cards is in good shape with just some looseness noted.

There are no issues with the headlining aside from a fracture spotted on the wood above the nearside rear door.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear knob are well presented as you can see in the images.

Mechanics

Continuous maintenance and regular service help to retain the car's lively performance and perfect road manners.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has seen a considerable amount of maintenance documented by an impressive amount of invoices over the ~21 years of Syed's ownership. The car started after a couple of turns of the key and idled smoothly with no undulations or hesitation. The exhaust fumes were kept to a minimum, with no spluttering or pops.

The engine is well-presented with many recent hoses and ancillaries.

The 4-speed manual gearbox selects gears without any problems, the overdrive engages smoothly and swiftly and Syed has not reports of issues with the clutch.

Suspension and Brakes

The car maintains a charismatic smooth ride and feels very composed with no knocks or thuds heard from the suspension at lower speeds.

Syed is happy with the performance of the brakes, they stop the car without any drama with no observations of pulling or judders.

The car is fitted with power steering and operates without any strain.

The Drive

The S-Type is known for its excellent road holding and ride, and this example certainly maintains that reputation. The car is quite capable of dealing with modern road conditions, thanks to its well-maintained brakes and usable performance.

On the day we were witness to a stable and brisk cruise at 40mph as well as some of the usual London crawl.

The car accelerates smoothly with no smoke on the over-run or when the throttle is blipped. Syed has not experienced any issues with overheating, partly thanks to the Kenlowe fan, but also his insistence in dispatching the car to the Jaguar specialist when issues did start to arise.

The car drove very well, no unwanted noises heard from the engine and the oil pressure stayed constant at 30psi. Syed admits the engine does weep a little bit of oil, but nothing to cause concern and we didn’t spot any patches on the ground while we photographed the car.

Electrics and Other

The car has retained much of its originality and has been looked after by several Jaguar specialists including The Jaguar Workshop and Ingenuity, with parts sourced from recognised specialists.

History and Paperwork

Since its bare-metal respray, a further £18k has been spent on maintenance - showing just how much Syed has cared for the car.

First registered in London in May 1965, the car has been in the hands of just four owners since then. The provenance goes back to 1987, with invoices, MOTs and contemporary photos of the car with its 3rd owner who clearly used and enjoyed it. It was placed in storage at renowned Jaguar Specialist Chris Coleman's workshop in the early 2000s.

*We noted the recorded mileage changes in 1987 from 62,970 to 32,608 in 1989.

Taken on by its current owner in 2003, who stripped the car down and treated it to a bare-metal respray, he continued to keep the car in a healthy mechanical state. Photographs of the respray are also included.

The most recent work on the car was carried out in late 2023, with a bill for £2,500 which includes a full service, brake servo, bushes and a new master cylinder. Work to remedy leaking core plugs was carried out earlier in 2023. Other documented work in the last 10 years includes a new voltage regulator, recondition dynamo, new battery and retracking.

Earlier invoices suggest servicing, clutch work, ball joints, bushes, clutch slave cylinder overhaul, new fuel sender unit, new fuel pump and seal kit which over the ~21 years tally up to almost £18k worth of work.

The car was last serviced in November 2023, and it comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Syed will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
