Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Poised and powerful, the E-Type lives up to its iconic reputation every time.

A legend in its lifetime, the Jaguar E-Type, when unveiled to the world in 1961 seemed too good to be true. Refined manners matched up to an impressive turn of speed, this stunning-looking package also contained a high level of contemporary technology. The E-type's credentials were further enhanced by its quality, affordability and comfort. With its desirability sealed, it became and remains the dream car for many. Following its first revamp in 1964, the Series 1 E-type was fitted with a 4.2-litre and improved by the virtues of its more comfortable seats, improved brakes and electrical systems, and an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox.

This car is one of just 1,182 RHD Series 1 4.2-litre roadsters built. Furthermore, this 1965 car is enhanced by its low number of previous owners, just 2, and the documented proof of it being owned by the same family since 1978. It has mainly been kept in storage over that ~45 years, and so is believed to have recorded just 56,087 miles. The car had an overhaul in 2007/2008, which included an engine rebuild and is presented as a very solid and presentable car that with a little TLC would make it quite something.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

To sell this car has been a genuinely difficult decision, but the time has finally come.

Ian runs a family-owned garage which has been established in the area for over 60 years. The Jaguar having previously been owned by his Uncle and Aunt carries a huge amount of sentimental value and took full ownership of the car in 2013.

He personally rebuilt the engine on this E-Type around ~16 years ago, and the car is a UK home market example. Ian has mainly used it for pleasure and the occasional Jaguar meet, but due to changes in his circumstances, with huge regret, is forced to sell the car. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Its stunning lines and desirable Series 1 features are enhanced by its remarkably solid structure.

Wheels and Tyres

The Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres were fitted on the car in 2007 but are still in good shape, with healthy tread and no significant damage.

The wire wheels were also fitted on the car at the same time, the spokes are tight with the rims free of damage and only show the mildest signs of age.

Bodywork

The structure of the car is pleasingly solid, with no notable issues regarding the floor pan, engine bay, sills, inner wings or bulkhead. The exterior panels are straight, with no damage on the body that we could discern. There are mild signs of age noted on the inner rear arch lips/sills, but otherwise very clean. We used a pit to photograph underneath the car too, visible in the "Mechanics" photo gallery.

The door rubbers show signs of age, otherwise, the doors open and close with ease, although the boot lid struggles to remain fully open. The panel fit is good, with flush-fitting doors. Please note bonnet appears to have an uneven gap in the pictures on the off-side, but this is just due to us not locking it correctly before photographing.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork has an even coverage of paint, with no mismatched colours and retains a decent lustre, a "Signal Red" example. There are a few signs where age has caught up with it, mostly light paint reactions and imperfections. A handful of small chips were noted, mostly on the sides of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The lighting is in good shape, with no issues spotted on the lenses. The chrome is generally intact, with just a light sheen of age. The rubber bumper seals are starting to perish but not at an unsightly stage.

The glass is decent, with a few marks noted on the windscreen.

Interior

S1 features like the toggle switch dash and there's plenty of evidence the car has been well cared for.

Seats and Carpets

The hard-wearing vinyl seats still retain their support, with the expected signs of patina. They are generally free of tears, except for a minor blemish on the passenger seat.

The carpets are in good shape, although a little water retention was noted underneath the driver's side foot well. The boot was bone dry, with evidence of limited use. The rear trim and door cards are in very good shape.

Dashboard

The dashboard is generally intact, with a little loose fabric and nothing other than light ageing on the facia. The radio is missing, the controls are legible with a similar aspect in terms of ageing noted on the dials and gauges and the centre console is decent condition.

The owner has also pointed out that the rev counter is not functional but everything else is said to work.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is intact, with no damage noted, just ageing to the wood that you'd expect with age. The gear lever is missing its end cap, but similarly in good shape with an intact gaiter.

Mechanics

An earlier engine rebuild has ensured that the straight-six still runs very sweetly and on-tune.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presents in good condition, with signs of maintenance. Some of the hoses do show signs of age, but the engine rebuild is said to have taken place in 2007/2008 appears to have been carried out to a high standard.

The engine starts up with the first turn of the key and continued to do so throughout our visit. The engine idles evenly, with no unwanted noises on tick over. The gearbox engages without any obstruction, with the owner reporting a good midway biting point. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

We had a chance to inspect the car in a pit, and the condition of the suspension and brake components back the car's restoration and appear to be free of road wear. They function without drama on our short trip out in the car.

The Drive

Sat as a passenger, it is a pleasant experience, as its engine note and its perfectly-sprung road manners still shine. It has been used on irregular occurrences over the years but the owner has still ensured that the engine runs well. No knocking was observed from the steering, suspension or braking, and the car cornered without problems.

The appealing soundtrack when accelerating simply adds to the experience, yet it was remarkable quiet when cruising at 40 mph. The engine reached temperature and settled at the midway point after 10 minutes, the owner has not reported any oil pressure trouble. The brake fluid level warning light was on during the drive, with the owner assuring us that it is just a wiring fault.

Electrics and Other

The hood is in good shape, with no damage on the canvas. It lowers and raises without issues, a little wear was noted on the inside. The car is fitted with a reverse warning light and a boot-mounted rack. A full stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted and is in near-perfect condition.

History and Paperwork

A UK home market example, 2 former keepers and family ownership since 1978, engine rebuild and mechanical overhaul ~16 years ago, the car is believed to have only covered ~1,000 miles since then, this example has a lot going for it.

The car comes with a current V5c, along with copies of historical logbooks that document all of its previous owners since 1965. The car was purchased by Ian’s Aunt and Uncle in 1978 and lightly used for 5 years until it was placed into storage. Ian carried out an overhaul, including an engine rebuild sometime in 2007/2008.

With the car having been mainly stored over the current family ownership, and the family owning a working car garage themselves, it comes with just a handful of historical invoices, including an MOT from 1977 documenting a recorded mileage of 55,136, suggesting that the car has not seen more than ~1,000 miles in the last 45 years. Ian has also provided a box with related magazines and books. In

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Ian
The car has had some underbody repair – but why would the sills and boot floor have been painted black?
What are the floors like under the carpets – are they black or red, can you see the sheet metal, is it clean?
As the car had been In family ownership are there any more documents or anything else that might validate the mileage?
Many thanks!

Hi, couple of questions,
1 When was the paintwork done on the car? Was it a complete re spray?
2 what work did you do when you rebuilt the engine?
Many thanks.
