Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

An iconic British classic, the Jaguar E-Type is one of the most instantly recognisable vehicles in the world with the 2+2 being the most affordable ticket into this exclusive club.

Manufactured between 1961 and 1974 the Jaguar E-Type is admired on the world stage, by both those in the know and those that are not, as one of the most iconic cars in motoring history thanks to its gorgeous styling and stellar performance.

This example comes to us having seen multiple stages of restoration throughout its history, with some of the most recent work including an engine rebuild and suspension refurbishment in ~2012. It has a big history file spanning all 57 years of its life on British roads, detailing every penny spent and almost every mile driven. It comes to market from ~5 year ownership,

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting William the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is the fifth E-Type I’ve owned and I dare say that it might just be the best one yet.

William has spent his entire life surrounded by the Jaguar E-Type in one form or another, with his dad having worked on them for as long as he can remember, William fondly recalls spending one Christmas morning with a 4.2L Jaguar engine dismantled on the kitchen table.

This closeness to the world of Jaguar E-Types has inspired William to own not just one, but five E-Types in his life, of which he remembers all of them kindly. This particular example he purchased from a long line of avid enthusiasts, each as E-Type mad as himself, and each with folders upon folders of paperwork to add to the already bursting history of the car. William now looks to sell up and move on, so that he can enjoy his other passion, the Jaguar C-Type! He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

With sweeping body lines and its curvaceous design there is little more to be said about the exterior of the Jaguar E-Type.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is sat on wire spoke wheels and these appear to be in good condition inside and out, with no visible signs of buckling or curb damage to the wheels and very little oxidation present on the chrome finish.

The wheels are fitted with Marshal tyres which appear to be in good condition, with no obvious signs of degradation to the sidewalls or tread pattern and a good amount of tread left too, these tyres are DOT marked 2008.

Bodywork

The Jaguar E-Type has arguably some of the loveliest body lines of any car ever made and this example is in good condition and doesn’t present any obvious signs of corrosion around the usual hotspots, nor anywhere else on the shell for that matter.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Of course the paintwork on this car is not original, having been repainted during an extensive restoration in the '80s by a previous owner, the paintwork was originally "Opalescent Maroon" but is now painted in the beautiful and popular "Carmen Red".

Given the relative age of the paintwork it presents in lovely condition - we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle is, as far as current owner William knows, original and is in good condition for it - neither windscreen, side windows, or rear glass have any visible chips, cracks, or scratches that would take away from the appearance of the glass, and surrounding trim and brightwork appears to be in good order too.

Interior

Oozing class, comfort, and luxury, the Jaguar E-Type offers a practical 4 seater cabin with plenty of luggage space without sacrificing any of its charm or elegance.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather upholstery which, save some light rehupolstery years ago, is in very good condition for its age with no rips or tears. The leather has aged wonderfully and has been broken in over the last half century to provide the interior with an age appropriate patina.

Likewise the carpets are in a suitably presentable condition thanks to the meticulous care this car has obviously received in years gone by.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition and the black vinyl dash top still looks good despite its age, with just a small mark on the top of it.

All appropriate switchgear and dials are present and in working order too, with the exception of the radio, however with a 4.2-litre straight six providing your soundtrack a radio feels somewhat redundant.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden steering wheel fits perfectly with the interior of the E-Type, adding just another touch of elegance to the cabin. The steering wheel itself is in good condition, with no damage to speak of to either the wooden rim or metal spokes.

The manual gear shifter is in good condition too, showing minimal signs of wear for its age, and having no damage to the surround either.

Mechanics

The 4.2L straight six powering the Jaguar E-Type produces a whopping ~265bhp when new, propelling the car to 60mph in under 7 seconds, and reportedly capable of attaining speeds of up to 150mph.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine underwent a rebuild during 2012 with a Jaguar engine specialist, VSE in Wales, at a cost of over £5,000. During our “On The Road” video you can see the fruits of those labours when the car starts from cold, and goes for a short drive out - during which the car performs faultlessly, starting on the button, and providing ample acceleration under load.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components underwent refurbishment by a previous owner shortly after the engine rebuild in 2012. Fast forward 11 years and the suspension still seems to be in good condition, with little in the way of discomfort when out on the road, and no obvious knocks, bangs, squeaks or other such noises from any of the four corners - the ride of the car was very comfortable as we noted when in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Likewise the brakes seem to be in good condition also, with little in the way of untoward noises when William took us out in the vehicle; the brakes seem to work as they should, not struggling to bring the car to a controlled and efficient stop.

The Drive

As to be expected from a car of this calibre, the drive is quite sublime - be it accelerating through country roads or cruising up the coast the Jaguar E-Type provides a comfortable drive that oozes class and comfort whilst offering respectable performance, even amongst modern traffic.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we spotted no obvious faults with any of the electrical systems except the radio, which William admits he should have fixed a long time ago, but given the engine noise and exhaust note of the car he simply never felt the need to do so.

History and Paperwork

This fantastic 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 2+2 comes to market with an impressive history of restoration and refurbishment, with evident care being taken to document every moment in the life of this historic motorcar.

We don’t often get the pleasure to see a cars history so thoroughly documented as we have with this particular example, from itemised lists of parts including penny washers and dust caps, to mile by mile note keeping of every journey ever driven under previous owners, the amount of history with this car is simply staggering. We’ve captured all the important documents, but the new owner has plenty more to look forward to with six ring binders full to the brim with event ticket stubs, newspaper feature clippings, and even a lengthy hand written history of the car by one of the previous owners detailing every last moment spent with his then pride and joy.

Coming to market with heavily documented refurbishment, restoration, and an engine rebuild under its belt, this 1966 Jaguar E-Type S1 2+2 is a fine example of an iconic piece of British motoring heritage. The car currently shows ~10,500, with the documented mileage showing the car will have travelled ~110,500 having "gone around the clock".

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi William, have you found the car to very reliable during your ownership? I live about 150 from Wakefield…would you be confident the car would be happy with that journey? Any overheating problems in your ownership? Lastly, slightly odd question, but do you find the clutch relatively light or is it quite heavy?
Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you,
Tim
