Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the most iconic sports cars of all time - the Jaguar E-Type with all the right ingredients: covered headlamps, rear lights above the bumper, and proper toggle switches introducing the Series 1.

The E-Type is known worldwide for dashing good looks and great performance - not much to say that you don't already know.

Alf, has owned this lovely red example for the previous 16 years. He's spent a lot of time and money maintaining the condition of the car, which really shows today. He'll be sad to see such a car go from his collection, however happy to see it being used and cherished by a like-minded E-Type enthusiast.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Alf the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

E-Type enthusiast Alf, has enjoyed many great road trips in this Series 1.

Alf purchased the car back in 2005, and put his previous engineering background to good use by setting out on making a long list of improvements to the car, while trying to keep it as original as possible.

Over his ownership, Alf has carried out the following upgrades/repairs: front seat swabs in black leather, both door skins, both inner/outer sills, fitted a Kenlow electric fan, header tank, replaced all hoses, exhaust manifold, new bonnet, heavy-duty starter motor, alternator, radiator, cooper craft front and rear disc brakes, hand brake mechanism, back axle re-build along with new oils and seals, speedo and electric clock rebuilt, new headlining, horn push mechanism, direction indicator switch, front axles with adjustable height, both front subframes, steering wheel, Bluetooth radio, full stainless exhaust system, brake master cylinder overhaul and new servo - what a list!

Alf doesn't enjoy the car as much as he once did, as it's quite an effort getting in and out of this sporty 2+2. He has made it a little easier by also replaced the original steering wheel, with a smaller sportier variant, which eases maneuvering and climbing in and out of the car. Alf mentions the original wheel is still present if the new owner would prefer to have the original fitted. Alf has also spent a lot of money refurbishing the steering wheel and bringing it back to its former glory.

Alf will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Golden ratio proportions, the E-Type is beautiful and arguably the most important Jaguar ever made.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with wire wheels all around, which offers the E-Type a very sporty stance. The wheels appear in great condition on the car however the rear nearside wheel shows some minor wear and would benefit from a detail.

Each wheel is wrapped in Vredestein Sprint ST Tubeless tyres, each one appears to be in good condition.

Bodywork

The 2+2 body offers a sleek and comfortable cabin, which makes long tours around the continent a breeze with the benefit of the gorgeous series 1 styling.

Alf has had a new bonnet manufactured, painted, and fitted on this E-Type, along with both door skins and sills. He's gone the extra mile in preserving this iconic roadster. As you would expect the body appears in great visual condition, with just some very tiny stone chips on the front bonnet and a very small area of cracking near at the lower rear nearside bumper of the car, you'll have to get very close to notice these areas.

Please take a look at the detailed photos and videos for a close look at the E-Type and assess the condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful deep red, the paint looks great across the car. Looking even in colour and finish across each panel, the paint reveals a deep lustre when viewing from a side-on perspective.

The colour of the car certainly stands out on the roads today compared to other grey or black variants you may find.

Please view the in-depth videos and photos for a close view of the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

Both the glass and chrome trim is in great condition along with the rubber seals around the glass panels.

Interior

Timeless elegance - a full black leather interior offers pure class like never before.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are one feature replaced by Alf within the Series 1. Very smart black leather seats line the cabin. After inspection, the seats appear in great condition, along with the door cards, carpets, and roof lining, which have been attended to by Alf.

Dashboard

The original black dashboard, with all the correct and original dials, is fitted - they all appear in good condition. We did notice one small tear in the dashboard material on our visit.

Alf has informed us that all the dials, gauges, etc work as they should - he mentions having the speedo and clock rebuilt during his ownership.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A lovely smaller and sporty steering wheel has been fitted within the cabin. Alf mentions the new owner can choose between this wheel or the original Jaguar E-Type wheel which has been rebuilt and refurbished to a high standard. You can view this in the history and paperwork media pack below.

The gear stick and handbrake lever are both in great condition.

Mechanics

Alf has poured all his efforts into restoring and maintaining this legendary E-Type.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the legendary 4.2L XK Inline-6, the 4.2 produced the same power and same top speed as the smaller 3.8L however offered around 10% increased torque. The 4.2L block was completely redesigned, made longer to accommodate 5mm larger bores, and the crankshaft was modified to use newer bearings.

The 4.2L started up the first time in the garage in our video and soon moved into a smooth tick over. Alf has uprated a few items, including a Kenlow electric fan, starter motor, alternator, and radiator, to name a few parts.

Suspension and Brakes

Alf has always given the brakes along with all the other mechanical parts the attention they require over his ownership. He has fitted specialist Cooper disc brakes all around for prompt stopping power.

The car's suspension looks good and as reported by Alf, there are no issues with the springs and no creaks when getting in and out or using the car.

The Drive

As well as looking the part, the E-Type 4.2 offers a silky smooth high-performance drive. It's a car that is luxurious to cruise in, and doesn't miss a beat when you put your foot down.

We captured a local drive around in the E-Type with Alf and have it ready for you to view in the mechanical video.

Electrics and Other

Alf confirmed all electrics work as they should and the switches and wiring all appear in very good condition.

History and Paperwork

Alf has injected new life into this stunning red E-Type - an iconic car, ready for many more road trips.

Alf has a folder busting at the seams, full of invoices, MOTs, and documentation from his ownership, and documents from the previous owners. He is more than happy to answer any questions about the care and maintenance of the car in the comments below.

Importantly this is a matching numbers car (engine and body) - both numbers match the Heritage certificate and you can see images of the numbers in the paperwork section. The engine frames have been changed in the past, hence no number on the right side wing section.

The car was professionally converted from LHD to RHD in 1989 for the previous owner and a band called 'The Grumbleweeds'!

The car also comes with a full tool kit (non-original) in the boot and a full-size spare.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summerised our own view on the car in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Alf,
Your E-Type is very appealing.
I note the recent MOT advisory states “oil leak but not excessive” – are you able to identify the location/source?
Thanks
Jim

Hi, All major leaks have been sorted, crank seal, back axle etc. Bills to prove, the minor leak is from the rocker cover, as it is minor it’s just one of the jobs I never got round to,. I just wipe the rim of the cover. It manifests itself as a 1inch stain on the floor over a week, the other advisories are “ corrosion on discs, this is on the outside edge/rim not the “disc”. Show me a car that hasn’t got rust there. Same with the rear springs, it’s surface not structural.

Hello Alf,
If i had a preference it would be for a manual gearbox.
Your E-type seems to drive well in the video and is
this the case when you get up to say 70mph ?
Thanks, Neil

It drives well at 70 and exceeds the legal limit if required. I have driven Manchester and back without problem. The only time I ever got towed into a work shop in 16 yrs was when the fuel pump gave up.
