Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Few cars from this era deliver this much style and comfort, the Daimler Sovereign is British luxury at its finest.

The Daimler Sovereign was produced alongside the Jaguar 420 in 1966 - it features a 4.2L XK engine and this example comes with the super desirable 4-speed-manual gearbox with overdrive - the one to have!

The Sovereign was a new breed of a luxury car, offering the ultimate driving pleasure with a focus on comfort - this was an industry standard-setter for the luxury car market in its day.

We really like this example, it's been well maintained and restored (where-needed) by its owner Dean.

Dean has really gone over and above to make sure this example is of the tidiest Sovereigns out there.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Dean the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had my fun owning and bringing this Sovereign back to life, now it's time for it to be passed on for a new owner to enjoy.

Dean has meticulously preserved this lovely 1968 Daimler Sovereign during his ownership. The car was dry stored and SORN for 10 years before he purchased it and brought it back to life.

There's lots of paperwork and receipts with this example that just shows you the amount of detail Dean has gone to in bringing the car to the condition it is in today - both cosmetically and mechanically.

The colour is fantastic and really suits the car, Opalescent Golden Sand - just look at it shine in the Autumn sunshine.

Dean is a Jaguar man at heart, and this is just one of many in his collection. Unfortunately, he's having to let this one go, but will be glad to find a new owner to use and enjoy just, as he has.

Dean will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

A curvaceous nose which contours around its four lamps make this a very handsome car.

Wheels and Tyres

Dean has recently fitted 15" wire wheels on this example and wrapped them in Vredestein Sprint Classics rubber that looks to be in very good condition.

We really like the look of these wire-spoke chrome wheels, they elevate the car creating a more luxurious yet sporty look.

Please take a look through the photos and videos to judge for yourself.

Bodywork

We didn't notice any significant imperfections when we looked at bodywork in bright sunlight - a very lovely example indeed.

Looking over all the panels and leading edges we noticed small areas of corrosion in the corners of the rear door and underneath the doors - not bad for a car that's now over fifty two years old!

Take a look at the extensive video and photo review to see the detail.

Paint

This Daimler Sovereign was recently treated to a fresh respray by Dean - the finish really does look good and the colour is very even and consistent across the car.

We did notice a few minor scratches and chips along the edges of the bonnet, however, you'll have to get really close to notice them.

Please have a look at the videos and images for a more detailed view.

Glass and Trim

Dean didn't want to leave the restoration of this Sovereign half-finished, he went the extra mile replacing the rubber seals for the glass.

Dean did keep the original chrome trim that looks truly awesome in the sunlight.

Interior

A proper Daimler dashboard faces you that carries the same DNA as the Jaguar E-Type as you silently sweep down those country roads in style and elegance.

Seats and Carpets

Pure class, expect nothing less in this Daimler Sovereign 4.2. The original biscuit leather seats make travelling in this car a very pleasurable and relaxing experience.

As inline with the car's mileage we think the leather has worn in nicely. No rips or tears to be found, just genuine leather creases that show its originality, and fifty two years later, they still look good.

Please take a look at the 'Interior Review' video to see all the details.

Dashboard

The Sovereign features a fascia layout, with its beautifully clear instruments and a neat row of switches.

The wood veneer looks really smart, and black dials with numbers are all very legible.

Dean reports all the switches and dials work as they should on this example.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a three-spoke, wooden veneer steering wheel that gives the car a luxurious yet sporty look. A very practical steering wheel that has a period style in line with the car's age.

That all important and original gearstick with overdrive is in original condition - please look at all the images and videos for a more detailed view.

Mechanics

Crowned for its superb ride, comfort and handling - the Sovereign offers light and accurate steering with effortless performance.

Engine and Gearbox

A large 4.2L Jaguar XK engine powers this extremely good looking example. This engine is mated to a 4-speed gearbox with overdrive for those smooth drives down to the coast.

During Dean's ownership of the car, he's spent a lot of money getting it mechanically up to scratch. He said, "with modern oils, these engines will run for forever."

Dean wanted to keep the car as original as possible having work done to replace parts to improve the running performance and maintenance of the car.

Please watch our "Cold Start" video above to see the car starting with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

This car is appraised for its smooth handling and control on the road.

Dean assures us that the car handles as you'd expect for a luxury saloon of this calibre, and stops just as it should do too.

The Drive

This car was designed to be smooth and reliable, with lots of room for luggage which makes this a very practical car.

One of Daimler's largest cars on the road at the time - this car was very luxurious and still is today, a new benchmark was set for the luxury car market.

Due to Covid restrictions we couldn't take a passenger ride in the car, however, Dean assures us the car drives beautifully and fault-free.

Electrics and Other

Dean has fitted an electric ignition on this example. He also mentioned that the car had a Waso lock, which was revolutionary for car security in the '60s.

Dean reports that all other electrics are working as expected.

History and Paperwork

Original manuals and handbooks along with a briefcase filling wad of paperwork for the new owner to read though.

No shortage of receipts for parts fitted on this car here. You'll find lots of work completed on the car over the past few years of ownership. Dean has made sure it's tip-top for the new owner to enjoy straight away.

The car also has its original handbooks and manual and you can tell from the photos how meticulous the owners have been in keeping this car.

Examples like this don't come up every day, especially fresh from a large collection of a Jaguar / Daimler enthusiast - so get bidding early and don't let this rare example get away from you.
