Introduction

Unmatched luxury, exceptional ride, and super handling – it's the ultimate 1960's Jaguar experience.

The Jaguar 420 was the evolution of the S-type, equipped with the 4.2-litre version of the iconic XK engine. Completely restyled, the 420 also featured a particularly well-sorted suspension and steering setup, making it one of the most enjoyable Jaguars of the era to drive. Positioned as an executive car, it was plushily furnished and offers a perfect entry into the world of comfortable, reliable travel at what remains an appealing price.

This example is made even more attractive by the extensive restoration carried out around ~20 years ago, which was featured in Classic Car Magazine. Sold with photographic evidence of its restoration, along with recent invoices and handbooks, this beautifully presented 1968 Jaguar 420 could serve as an ideal comfort cruiser or even a wedding/prom/events car.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Beautifully balanced and smartly presented, the graceful and stately Jaguar 420 impresses.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and their trims are presented in generally very nice condition, showing no significant signs of wear other than some surface corrosion. The front tires are Pirellis, while the rears are from the Austone brand, all with a healthy amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The panels are free of dents and show no obvious signs of corrosion, although there are signs of age underneath the rear doors. There is also a minor, hasty repair to the nearside front corner wing. The doors open and close with their expected smooth, soft action.

The engine bay, wheel wells, floor pan, chassis rails, and boot floor are all clean and well-maintained. The underside remains solid, with only a subtle sheen of age where the inhibitor has naturally worn.

Paint

The paint is evenly applied, with a consistent hue, good coverage, and a healthy gloss. There are a few minor imperfections, likely from a paint reaction, along with the occasional run, some small cracks at the base of the B-pillars, and evidence of overspray on the door seals. However, these imperfections are subtle and do not detract from the overall positive presentation.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in excellent condition, with no noticeable damage, and the lights and lenses are also in great order.

The chrome trim is of high quality, showing no significant blemishes or damage.

Interior

Lavish furnished, the interior is cleanly presented.

Seats and Carpets

The blue Ambla seats are in good condition, showing some age-related creasing. They remain firm and comfortable, with a pleasing appearance.

The carpets are decent and free from damp.

The boot trim is clean, with only minor wear on the boot floor fabric.

Dashboard

The dashboard is generally free of damage or marks. The veneer shows some age-related crackling but retains a consistent gloss. The centre console, shelf padding, and trim are all clean, as are the switches and fully legible dials.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear selector are both in good condition.

Mechanics

There's plenty of urge from the 4.2-litre straight six, the 420 is famous for combining power, smoothness and comfort.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts smoothly with a single press of a button and idles evenly. There’s no hesitation in its running, and any exhaust condensation clears quickly once the engine warms up. The engine bay is clean and well-presented, with healthy-looking components. The hoses, wires, and ancillaries all appear in good condition and it has recently been fitted with new spark plugs and an alternator.

The car doesn’t leak and engages both drive and reverse without issue.

The gear selector operates smoothly, and some recent gearbox parts have been fitted.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is smooth, and the car handles well, with no knocks or unevenness. The brakes perform effectively, stopping the car without any judders or squeals, and the handbrake works as expected.

The Drive

The Jaguar drives well, thanks to its power steering, servo brakes, and smooth, luxurious ride. The 420 also delivers a good amount of performance, with plenty of punch when needed. The twin 2-inch SUs, paired with the stainless steel exhaust system, enhance the driving experience. There is some amount of play in the steering wheel, which may be improved with new steering column bushes, though it doesn't appear overly problematic, and there are signs that a wheel bearing may need greasing. The engine performs smoothly, surging well under acceleration, and is free of rattles or any unwanted noises.

Electrics and Other

A digital radio has been installed.

The door cards are in excellent condition, with no issues.

The headlining fabric is also in great shape, free from sagging or rips.

History and Paperwork

Subject to a substantial restoration, it has also featured in a magazine.

First registered in April 1968, this car was on the verge of being sent to a scrapyard, having only covered ~68,282 miles. Restored by a restoration apprentice, it required extensive work. Parts were sourced from SNG Barratt, alongside some self-fabricated metalwork, and the engine was fully rebuilt with components from Jaguar specialist David Manners.

There are several maintenance invoices since the restoration, along with a number of MOT certificates. It is also accompanied by a current V5, the original handbook, a service manual, and the original spare parts catalog.

The restoration was documented in a 2004 issue of Classics Magazine, and the car also comes with an impressive collection of restoration photos.

From Trade Classics:

This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car - instead the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.
