Introduction

Adam
CEO

Phew, you can stop your search now, this is the S2 Roadster you've been looking for - a proper drivers' example that's achingly gorgeous in its eye-popping dark blue and chrome combination.

Of course there's not much to say about an E-Type that hasn't already been written, over and over again, so we'll leave that alone this time in the introduction.

What we will say is that this example is a home market right-hand-drive car that is in great condition and mechanically sound. We drove the car during its consignment and it's one of the best drivers' examples we've been out in for a while.

The car has been fitted with a longer legged 2.88 rear axle improving the car's cruising performance and feeling like an overdrive.

You may be wondering why the guide on this home market car is lower than usual, well the car had a swapped out engine a few decades ago - it wasn't an XJ engine or anything like that, it was a proper E-Type specification / compression that's right for this car, period correct. This was done at a time when the original engine wasn't so important to values, but the good news now is that this change makes driving an stunning E-Type Roadster way more affordable.

This is a proper drivers' car that looks incredible, is in great shape, and can be tinkered with over time to improve further - a solid investment for both your driving and investment pleasure.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Adam after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The drive of this E-Type is something else - I've really enjoyed using it as a recent runaround - it's just a super solid car both in terms of body and mechanics.

We've known Paul for many years now and we have been fortunate to help him find new owners for some very exceptional and rare cars.

Paul worked for Jaguar Cars / Jaguar Land Rover as an Engineering Manager for over thirty years. His career took him through core Engineering Design to Special Vehicles and latterly Jaguar Heritage / Jaguar Classic where one of his achievements was the technical strategy and planning for the recent ‘E Type Reborn’ Programme.

Paul retired from JLR a few years ago in order to peruse his own passion within the classic car business; of course, specialising in Jaguars. So Heritage Classics Ltd was born and Paul now sources and works on Jaguars and other exotics every day.

Of course Paul is very well connected in the Jaguar world and when this car came up for sale he couldn't resist buying it, and using it before asking us to find it a new home.

Exterior

This car stops pedestrians and traffic in their tracks - the Dark Blue curvaceous body looks stunning against the brightwork.

Wheels and Tyres

Both are in really excellent condition.

The wheels are Dunlop 6.5J - deeper than standard dish chrome wires that look really great on the car. The chrome is in excellent condition - please take a good look at the images and videos to see just how good they are.

The Pirelli tyres are 205/70/15 and also look in excellent condition, however they are dated (3001), so the new owner may want to check them over a little closer.

Bodywork

The fit and gaps are good around the car with the doors opening and closing with easy - we've taken images and videos from each angle to study for yourself.

The underside also looks very solid as you'll be able to see in the media pack. The boot floor, sills, front floors and engine frame all look solid with very little signs of corrosion.

The general bodywork is also good - just a few things to point out are a couple of parking dent dings that could easily be rectified and the rear boot lid would benefit from a little fettling on its fit. We did notice the springs that support the lid do need attention.

Paint

The paint is Jaguar's 'Dark Blue' and looks even in both colour and consistency across the car - it really does suit the lines of the Roadster and works so well with the chrome.

There are just a few imperfections to note that you'll see in the media file. These include some stone chips and marks that you may be able to improve the appearance of further. However, there is nothing that we feel needs any immediate attention.

You'll be able to pull up at any show or event in this car straight away and feel proud to own.

Glass and Trim

The chrome is really good across the whole car - it's been well cared for or redone at some point in the past.

The glass is good across the car with just a bit of de-lamination shown on the front windscreen.

The hood and it’s stowed hood cover is black mohair lined in beige, and the hood cover is black and attractively piped blue to match the paintwork. All is in very good condition and fits well too - the plastic rear screen is nice and clear.

Interior

It's lovely to sit on original leather that has the history of the car woven in - it really makes a difference to the feel of a classic motorcar.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in very good original condition with no rips or tears. They have aged beautifully and hold their shape well and feel good to sit in. Too many cars are over restored these days and they lose their sense of their history - you can't replace or buy that back.

The carpets are also good throughout.

Dashboard

The dash is in good condition.

There appears to be extended binnacles fitted to the gauges that may be a candidate for removal in the future.

The dash top is in good condition and may have been restored in the past.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both original fitments and continue the feeling of history in this example.

No issues to note and both worked well on our short drive out.

Mechanics

This car just feels like you could jump in it and drive to Scotland without doing any preparation, or suffer anxiety that you may not make it!

Engine and Gearbox

As mentioned, the engine was replace back in the '90s - a time when having the original engine wasn't so important. The really good news is that this is an original E-Type engine that's right for the year of the car. So when you open the engine bay at a show then no Smart Alec will say... errr wait a minute!

The engine started first turn from cold and settled straight away with immediate oil pressure. The oil pressure remained excellent even when running hot on one of the hottest days of the year.

Please watch the videos to see the car starting from cold and on a short run out in the local area.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension and components all look good around the car - we've taken as many pictures as we can for you to judge the condition for yourself.

The Drive

We took the car out on a short drive and you can hear the commentary in the 'On the Road' video - we do apologise for the shakiness of the camera but felt the commentary was important to include to give you confidence in the way that this car drives.

It was an absolute joy to take out. The temperature was in the late twenties during midday - not a time E-Types usually enjoy. But this example was faultless. The drive was very good indeed. The clutch, gearbox, engine all performed well giving absolute confidence. There was also no anxiety sitting in the heat in traffic - the temperature never left the normal range. Even when very hot the oil pressure performed well - never dipping below 20 - over 2,000 revs it was always in the 30-40 range.

Under acceleration the car was off and away - it felt just like it should and inspired confidence.

Electrics and Other

The car is light on electrics but all seem to work well.

The Blaupunkt radio works perfectly, the sound quality is excellent with modern speakers in the original position, and sits in the correct console but with a unique fascia plate (radio surround) that has been fitted to allow easy access to the fuses behind the centre panel (the factory fascia plate often partially obscures access).

History and Paperwork

A home market, right-hand-drive E-Type Roadster that drives like it should with drop dead gorgeous looks - imagine winning this auction and tucking it in your garage.

Please review the history file to see that the car was exported to the EU for a time before being repatriated to the UK.

There is a UK MOT in 1992 that shows a mileage of 123,747 and the car is now at 132,170 - Paul tells us he believes the engine was changed when it was in the EU and this maybe the reason why it's so rock solid with excellent oil pressure readings, i.e. it may have only covered around 10k miles.

Even though the car doesn't need an MOT Paul did have one done last week for peace of mind.

We have actioned our usual checks;
- Photo ID
- V5C (dealer not recorded as an additional owner on the logbook)
- HPi clear

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions. As you can see, we go to great lengths to represent the car as fully and as accurately as we can, so please take time to review the entire listing, images and videos and also ask any questions you may have in the 'Ask Owner' section before placing your bid.

Morning all…. so just to say I borrowed the car from Paul yesterday afternoon for a run out to see my dad (he’s 91 and used to have a S2 Roadster back in the day). I did about 40 miles across country and in traffic too with the outside temp being in the late twenties. The car was rock solid and didn’t miss a beat on the 80 mile round trip. Temp was usually a 1/3 in on the gauge and went to 1/2 when in long traffic in Bromsgrove rush hour (about 20 mins to get through at a hot part of the day). Oil pressure was always excellent and around 30+. It went to 20 when in traffic after 30 miles or so on tick over. Super excellent and wish my own S2 FHC was that good. Charging was always positive. The cars drives exceptionally well and on the night drive back I wanted to keep on going. It felt like I could have driven it up to Scotland with no issues. Bottom line is I really like the car and at guide money it’s a bargain. Just wanted to let you know about my experience.

Here’s a quick videos of the trip:
